Yea I know. Old sw connected to evil apple prevent you doing anything without paying winkers.

But we want to move pics and vids off the missus iPad to make some room and not lose them.

So installed iTunes on the old lappy with xp. Greyd out sync. I can import playlist and see pics that are on the iPad, but not actually move or save them.

Feckers.

Get on the cloud. Seriously are people still storing files locally?

Chuck filezilla ftp server on your xp box. Create a user with rights to write to the folder you want them in.
Install an ftp client on your ipad.
Log in to your ftp server. you will need the name or ip address of your xp box and for them to both connect via the same network.

Use your client to shift the files.

If you want you can muck around with a file share instead, but I pads don't like sharing files with xp machines.

If you wanna get really tricky you can use port forwarding to make your ftp server avail from the Web. Buy I wouldn't recommend it if it is your home pc you do Internet banking from etc.

Local also ages faster because you don't have a maintenance schedule to replace your disks.

Being an older xp box backups are vital.

Every single person who has ignored my professional recommendations regarding backups has eventually asked me about disk recovery.
That costs a lot more.

good advice infront of the wrong reasons.

Xp was no more shit than nt4, in itself, one of the less-shit things m$ managed. (and, really, the same code they're re hashing and selling to morons as 'windows 8')
It will unlikely be the point of failure (virii excluded) and less likely, of data corruption.

Hard drives are cheap.

Aye, but a legit xp box is older than 5 years. Law of averages that hdd he is putting faith in has never been updated.

Perhaps link to your tao of backups?

PS why ftp server it? It doesn't care what your source file system is or the destination. It will handshake and translate.
Certainly with a gen 1 ipad and a file share to xp method I made a bit of coin recovering files the user deleted off their ipad because they displayed in windows. Oh oh... can't open them.

I forget the exact why but came down to differing ntfs versions between what the user had and what the ipad can write to.
Jobs was not a fan of windows or backward compatibility.
Fix was plugging drive into an Ubuntu box and copying the files to my ftp server then down loading them to the user's pc.

Moral of the story?
Always check your copies open before deleting your source. X2 if going cross platform.

Home PC is xp too and media copied twice small os disc with ghost copies. Good enough to rebuild a failure, rarely used these days. Lappy was a $30 one I use in the garage to program ECUs and the like. But it was handy to try. I'll try filezilla route when i get motivated again thanks for advice. Pity it has to be such a faff.

Yeah, being open source the is no attempt at meeting security standards. Cos who would hack that?

Local is free and in you control.

Apple's cloud storage is free and you are in control. You get 25G with your iPad.

You need to put it to them in a form they can understand...

I used to tell GMs/CFO's: "What would happen if I took all of the servers out of your computer room right now and you never saw them again?" "What would happen if I took your laptop off you and you never saw it again?"

The look on their face as the reality dawns is priceless - well, $120-150 an hour, at any rate... I've sold a LOT of backup gear.

Yeah, not to far from what I tell people but I don't often deal with companies on backups except for the ones I do myself at work.

Individuals always seem to think they are different.
Some listen, the others come to me later for recovery.
