View Full Version : The Allure

The Allure of a new bike.

It starts with a itch in the back of the mind. Possibly in your soul first transferring to your mind.

A opportunity arises with unexpected funds......

The mental debate starts - mortgage reduction, family trip offshore ...... bike.

You risk a look.

Shit, a couple of desirable rides have been repriced and look achievable .........

An embarrassing number of hours are lodged on the laptop 'researching'

Talks are held with the shops - they are evasive about actual trade values....

One brand has a demo, the other piece of exotica does not.

Too busy at work - but you are determined to book a day/afternoon off to test ride the demo.

Work commitments say this week is out for a demo ride. Next looks shit weather wise. Is this a sign to play it safe?

Last weekend was fine - you changed the oil and went for a fang. The bike knows something as it was faultless and sung sweet music from the Yoshis and even manage to somehow avoid a police car (OK someone else was pulled over ...).

The unexpected money is taking longer than indicated - and a debate over the total value - possibly another sign? negative or possibly positive if it increases (good chance).

More internet hours - aftermarket pipes sorted already!

The Allure continues ...................

Lucky for me I don't purchase very often (last time in 2007 was much easier!).

Look a handbag is not just something to carry your tampons in. It is also a statement of who you are and where you have been and are going in life.

There is also the Allure of lightweight wheels, upside down front end conversion and a unique exhaust system for the existing ride ...... you may understand that option :bleh::niceone:

But I always desired one of those Italian ones .....

Younger cousin .......

One bike garage mine so it has to be a reliable one :-) no room for old exotica. Plus experience tells me that when you revisit the glory days most often it turns out the fond remembrance of them is clouded by time. Remember that girl from High school? She is probably 30 kg heavier with a vagina like a pair of barn doors flapping in a strong wind .....

Agree - risking a look is like having a peep at the sun or that office girls cleavage - a high degree of risk.

Well, you'll possibly appreciate the Hornet more after you've had something with average reliability. That said, life is short, why not ride lots of the bikes available? Mine just had it's 132k service last week.

For me, I keep going in circles and still end up loving my BMW: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/160492-Stupid-Temptation

This reads like 50 Shades of a Tyrkicker, just get on and buy the thing.... And yes no dealer wants your old shitters no matter how much you think of them.
Better to sucker someone in on trademe then rock up with cash.
I've only ever test ridden half the bikes I've ended up buying, the rest have been bought on spec and rep alone including two brand new bikes and never disappointed.
Hell the GSXR the buggers didn't even have the colour I wanted but it grew on me....

This, exactly.

At the moment, I'm doing this, exactly. I do have some leverage, given that I recently sold a bike because it was the sensible thing to do at the time, and I hate doing the sensible thing most of the time.....

You just have to try and satisfy enough of the above that the excitement of purchasing a new bike is not diminished by any lingering doubt that it's the right thing to do.

trade it will be most likely - I get too attached to the silly things - move it on. Plus doubt I'd tolerate random tyre kickers in the private market.

You should buy the 1090 in black from Motorad with free freight for under 20k.
Sell yours on tardme. I have sold a dozen bikes and not one person turned up to pre inspect any of them.
Hold onto yours for 2 months before selling it and catch the guys wanting a bike for the summer. There will be plenty of ex learner riders wanting a big affordable bike then.

So you think I go wrong by keeping mine nice and clean all the time? It is a interesting theory with a degree of merit.... I wonder if the same applies to super model girlfriends - would the loveliness just become your normal and after awhile your eye strays?

Salesman was off ill today. Possible a sign. Unsure which way that sign would go - his or mine. I'm going with mine, he will be eager for a sale after sick days off.

Or he runs the risk of me looking at that other one .......

It also occurs to me I could keep what I have and buy a used Bonnie as a project bike .......

Haha - the W650 is more Bonnie than the Bonnie?

250 ........ those days are decades gone. No torque = no interest at my end. And No I'm not ready for a Harley, oddly the dealer had a very nice kitted Sporter in they traded a while back. Maybe the next bike in the next decade.

When you buy them infrequently you want a keeper you'll live with for some years.

J.A.W.
29th August 2015, 17:55
"No torque"?

L.O.L... is that why you're tired of the Honda 4?

Better buy a 'busa then..

A fat ol' Bonnie sure won't power lift the front wheel like an RS 250 will.. via its torque hit..

( Any decent Cagiva Raptors about, - another Italian V-twin - with a Suzuki mill.. worth considerin' - mayhaps?).

Nah -the Hornet has a great mid range - it is interesting when checking out specs and dyno curves how grunty it still is. There is a illusion a IL4 is top end only - bull. Busa - nah not my thing way to fat for my interest.

How's a "used Bonnie" fit into that scenario, then?

Def' ride it 1st.. they are lumps..

I have couple years back. Weight more than my Hornet 900! Fair to say somewhat less power!

I do like the way they are a starting point for something interesting - not a chance in hell one would stay remotely stock with me. Which is also a reason I've kept away from them - shell out of a mint one then take half of it apart and drop $ on goodness......... then there is a the power (or lack).

I thought when the thruxton came out years back - look out they are hot rodding one finally. Alas no.

So in my heart I know the bonnie will not accompany the keeper (unless some sucker really really needs cash quick).

Back to the two Italians in question. A test ride will decide no doubt.

Back to the two Italians in question. A test ride will decide no doubt.

You need go for a ride to the Cold Kiwi. Stop at bike shop on way home and test ride some. Buy new bike and have it shipped home. Wait 2 months and sell your bike privately in summer if you no longer require it.

BUT- Idd suggest you keep your Hornet because when you want to ride and the weather isn't good or you want to take a passenger you will wish you still had it. I find myself treating the MV Agusta like a special treat to ride and use the bandit to do the dirty work. You may find you understand this more once you own the Agusta. Its like a naughty mistress that does things to you your wife wouldn't understand. Disclosure-- I don't condone out of relationship affairs.

Looked at them. A hoot and a fine engine.

BUT - I'd be better off keeping the Hornet. Woooooo I hear you say. The Yammy is a good price but I'd drop 3K on Ohlins on it plus a pipe bringing it near the two bikes I'm looking at. I have already Ohlined my Hornet and won't accept the stock Yamaha suspenders now .......

Plus. A personal thing - the Yammy does not physically appeal to me in the looks department. I'm a visual arty person and it does not work for me. Just one of those things to add to my list - some people don't get it.

On a side note I picked up a magazine last week with a supercharged version of the Yammy in it ....... 150 odd hp!

A shitty grey day in Christchurch - must get in the shed and make room for a car (moved house recently ....) instead of theory shopping for goodies on ebay!

Good to hear. I was after a change from the IL4. Great bike the Hornet but I'd owned it 8 years and the stars aligned to permit a replacement. Looked at a MV 1090 as well, fantastic bike but another 4. Now if they made a 1090 triple version of their 800 .........

Looking forward to the new relationship with the red one. I may need some louder noise makers .......
