View Full Version : North Island: 1KC - 1,000km Cruise
Euro2018
21st October 2017, 17:06
I'm signed up for the Hamilton 1KC, Sat 4th Nov.
I've never ridden anything like that distance in a single day before, so am planning to head out for a 500km ride on either Sun 29th or Mon 30th to shake out any bugs in my bike (and me).
If anyone else here wants to join me please get in touch. I'm a slowish rider, so don't expect a race.
Route undecided, open to suggestions.
PS - I'll be taking the Beemer, not the AG

Good one.
dont worry about the distance, they get easier once yourve done one or two.
i had only done 1 off ride longer than 500km before taking it on.
the weekend before the 1KC I did a 1200+ km ride in 1 day, had everything from rain, brilliant sunshine, rain, rain, freezing cold.
important if you rely on GPS you sort it out and test it.
mine stopped working on the NI800 within 1k of the start, the rest I did off the supplied notes.
and there was plenty of rain that day
Sort out the fuel stops and some snacks, water is important.
getting back to the start in Hamilton was a bugger for a nonhamiltonian last year.
warm gear for the last part
rain gear a must.
otherwise there is no time limit, so no need to race.
pace yourself
i maybe available sun 29th yet undecided.
no I don’t ride fast either.

Route was emailed out today. This is basically it with the checkpoints. https://goo.gl/maps/euRJaiQuF8v I would still tweak this in a few places e.g Google says its quicker SH3 instead of SH39 (riders guide) but it's not as fun, and guide also states to turn onto SH29 after Rotorua instead of SH28 like in this map (still 1009km total this way) so not sure if error or not. Feel free to use this maps link for navigation if needed, all the checkpoint homework has been done. I even stopped at a few of them for the NI1600, hopefully not pissing with rain this time

Avoca Hotel to Bulls, should I take the suggested shortcut or keep to the main road?

Makes naff all difference IMHO.
If you run the shortcut make sure you turn off onto Warrengate Rd just before Fordell, or you'll end up in Hunterville haha :bleh:

Unless your fuel strategy requires you to get fuel at the BP, id say it would be faster as well as more fun going Kaimatira as there would be 6km of 50 zone to get though otherwise :zzzz:

Thanks, will check it out:niceone:
i just didn’t want to be diverting into 10k of gravel or suddenly end up in hunterville or wanganui river :(
Fuel, something I have to sort out, as the fire breather has a rather optimistic gauge. Although I have never got to the bottom yet, I don’t want to tempt fate or water in tank.

Well, I tried and failed. Didn't manage to complete the 1KC, but came close.
By the time I reached Taupo (about 700km from the start) a family problem was emerging at home that needed me to be there, but I was also coming to the realisation that if I continued through to the finish I'd be dangerously fatigued and riding in the dark. Mostly brought on by getting soaked wet in the first two hours and then being wet & cold for the rest of the day.
Lessons learned :
Leather riding gear might save your skin sliding down the road, but it won't keep you dry in the rain.
Fewer gadgets on your bike lets you concentrate on the riding
(I had put a couple of GoPros and a GPS speedo on, but they were distracting)
My throttle grip (supplied by Fast Bike Gear) provided welcome relief for my right hand (not the sort of right handed relief you're thinking)
Thanks to eldog for accompanying me on the trip.
On a positive note, my bike worked fine, and I did manage to clock up around 850km over 12 hours under difficult circumstances.
So I'm still keen on trying for the TT2000. Being in February the days will be longer, warmer and I'll be better prepared.
The two longest legs of the TT2000 are about the same distance, so as long as I stay dry it's probably achievable.

You gave it a good go :niceone:
I did wonder how you were, since you were soaking/dripping wet at the first CP - the leathers aren't that water proof
The cold can suck the energy from you on long rides.
No worries - nice to have someone along for the ride
I think you will need a fuel tanker...... :devil2:
and a spare battery

I just got home. What a day! So, last week my bike went in for a 40k service. Today, it turned out that when they put the bike back together the fuel tank vent hose got pinched under the fuel tank creating a vacuum. The bike seemed to run normally, but when I stopped at the gas station, I couldn't open the filler cap due to the force of the vacuum.
It took a bit of faffing about to get the issue resolved. The end result is that I rocked up at the start location an hour or so after everyone else had gone, so I ended up doing the event alone - I didn't see anybody at any of the checkpoints.
Despite the initial hiccup it was a great day's riding. Nice weather and roads. The only real negative - there seemed to be an endless procession of caravans and camper vans all over the Coromandel. All up I managed 1300km of riding in 22 hours.
One other thing of note. I nearly witnessed a very bad accident when a rental car pulled out of the National Park T junction right in front of a car that was probably doing 90-100km/h in the 70 zone. Luckily there was nobody coming the other way so the car was able to swerve onto the other side of the road. It was a pretty near miss though.

Glad you got to the problem and sorted it, those things always seem to appear just when you don't need them
You have to remember always be observant.
I followed a driver who I wanted to pass, but they crossed the centreline so often it wasn't worth the risk.
Lots of drivers who could have slowed down in appropriate places to let others through, but didn't. Lots of others who did.
The GPS played up and a couple of times gave me 2 routes for the same intersection LOL
The bike performed like clockwork.
However, It was a fantastic day and a great ride, one of the better ones I have done, not much traffic generally which was great.
Looking forward to next years event:woohoo: another year to wait :crybaby:

I saw a couple in the 100 zone and one may have got me as I was passing. The first one was south of Thames somewhere on the only bit of straight road with no double yellow. Saw him and realised it was a camera when I saw the tinted windows but was committed to the pass. Did slow a bit. Can only hope the other car was in the frame. Saw another north of Turangi but can't remember where. Definitely saw this one in time. Nothing in the mail yet but they take time sometimes.

Down to 40 in some parts or less.
Saw at least 1 car and 2 fixed cameras.
No hurry, when your out for a cruise and not familiar with a lot of the roads.

I'm definitely keen assuming I (and bike) get through the NI800 unscathed this weekend. I'm currently nursing a bit of a hamstring injury, so hopefully it comes though this weekend without aggravation.
I'd definitely like to do it again though, especially after last year - I was late starting due to having to make some roadside repairs on the way to the start venue and I ended up riding the whole 1000 km without seeing another 1KC rider.
Also, the announed route is extra motivation - it's pretty hard to turn down an opportunity to ride around the East Cape.

GPS puts it at just over 1100kms. Only really need two stops for that for me. Gisborne and Opotiki but might hit Opotiki twice. Aim at 300km legs which gives me a buffer of 200kms just in case.

Bandit
Euro you are a bit fast.
Should allow 5 min per fuel stop a couple of minutes each top for stretch and drink/yak.
I roughly do 67 kph average.
For 6 oclock start and 1100 km
1100/67 + 6 = approx 10.45 finish
8pm would be fantastic but not possible with my current fitness, skill level and overall state of mind.
We may strike low traffic this will reduce the times as well.
Got the extra fuel sorted as long as it doesn't fall off.
Fuel opotiki. Gisborne. Tologa bay. Opotiki.

It's rough. I'm just using Google maps times and hadn't allowed for stops etc.
Mostly my question was "have I got the route right ?" or "are you and I going in the same direction ?"
I've added 5 mins to each check point and 3x 10 min fuel & food stops.
Placement of the fuel stops hasn't been thought about, they're just there to get the times right.
I've added a line for "Back onto SH5" as it's sunset at 8pm and I'd like to get back onto a familiar road by the time it's dark. The route from Lake Rotoma boat ramp (last check point) can either go north of Rotorua or south of the lake and through Rotorua (3 mins longer). Tempted to take the 3 min longer route as it gives me a fuel/food stop option in Rotorua and more of the road is familiar.
That brings me in to Hamilton at 9pm.
I did a daytime 500km ride to Eltham and back a few weeks ago and averaged 70 something kph.

I plan on an average of 80 (always seem to beat it somehow), 5 mins for a photo, 10 for fuel (aim to beat those too).
1,000km is usually an easy 12-12.5 hours with a half hour for lunch :)
It can depend on your riding companions ;)

I plotted the check points, times & distances in a spreadsheet.
Looks like 6am depart, 8pm arrival (roughly)
Does this look right ?

Just got home from working
Yeah looks ok for direction etc
Guess I am slower than most.
Like looking at scenery
It's a holiday for me
Like the ride
Hate having to look out for other road users.
Suppose to go to and return Tokoroa tomorrow night

I'm picking it could be slow going around the coast due to fine weather/heavy vehicles so the sooner that part is done the better, the rest is fairly tame with short bursts between CP's. looking forward to doing this ride on the Connie :2guns:

Bugger I can't make it this year due to unforeseen work commitments. Co worker and top bloke (rode a motorbike too)passed away recently which has put us behind and a few other related events outside of our control has meant I will be working Saturday.:weep:
To all you attending this year. Have a blast:2thumbsup

Should only be slow in a few short places ;)
The Connie will love trip around the Cape. Do it on a tank no worries.

It should be in reasonably good condition from what a local roading contractor told me the other day.
Make it a good day

Finished !
Back into Hamilton at about 7:45pm. Very pleased with myself.
My quick rough survey of other riders and bikes suggests I might have been one of the youngest riders on one of the oldest bikes. Very pleased with my nearly 20 year old Honda.
Learnings for next time (in case I look at this thread next year).
Put the mixed nuts for eating into a screw top jar, not a plastic bags which spills nuts into top box which then get ground up by everything else.
A lot of time is lost waiting for other riders at fuel stops. Consider other fuel stops in the same town or carry extra fuel onboard to skip a fuel stop.
Waze navigation might not work where there is no cell phone coverage, but is otherwise very good.
Extra battery for helmet comms went flat at 7pm, need a slightly bigger battery.
Take visor wipes.
I used a pen with a touchscreen rubber tip on it to operate my phone (nav & checkpoint photos), big improvement on last time as I didn't need to remove my gloves to take photos.
Crowdsourced navigation (following other riders) works. I found two short cuts that Waze didn't find by following others.
My new 1tonne pants & jacket worked well. I was able to open and close vents through the day as the temperature changed without having to take layers off and on. I was a little bit cold from 6am-8am, but nothing like last time in my wet leathers .
And thanks to the random stranger in the ute who helped me pick my bike up when it decided it wanted a wee lie down for a rest at an intersection.

I got in at 17:04 according to my GPS. It appears to think daylight savings is not here at present. I also lost the GPS signal about 40 times at various points. Software updated when I got home but no change. I think there was a satellite update and it may have upset my Garmin NAV V as I see someone else also had the same issue in Australia. Anyway it was a great ride and the road around the coast was in excellent condition. Could have done it in one fuel stop by pushing it but decided to do 3 stops for comfort. GPS apart from the time and losing signal had me finishing 17:56 when I left and arrive 18:04 so it is accurate as usual in that respect.
I Hyper-Lapsed the whole ride on my Go Pro so will upload that to youtube after a bit of editing. Useless GoPro still have not fixed their Quik software and the time shows UTC time only.
Thanks for another great ride and nice the rain held off (at least on the ride. It hammered down on the way up).

looks like same prep for NI800, get on bike and ride

D Moors is who they are looking for, uncertain if the person is departing from Hamilton or Wellington at this stage but has paid entry fee.

It was a great ride.
The weather held- well almost the whole way.
The stratford end really suited this rider and machine.
Mostly rode byself but was always given a wave by others on the ride.
The GPS mostly played the game. Although if I had more time I would have put a few more intermediate points in.
There are popup dumplings for sale on western access road, who knew? In the middle of nowhere. It wasn't on the route as the GPS thought it knew better.... lol
on my list of to do again rides

I completed another 1KC (my third start and second finish).
Good ride. I've never been along the Forgotten Highway so wasn't expecting gravel or the buttock clenching moment as I entered the narrow tunnel and realised a couple of things in quick succession; follow the wheel tracks not the mud between the wheel tracks and not all tunnels are lit like the motorway tunnels in Auckland, so flip up sunshade before entering tunnel.
Nearly had 300kg of Honda blocking the tunnel, but managed to not drop it.
No cell coverage at the pub checkpoint just past the tunnel, so no navigation on my phone. Just followed someone else. Easily solved.
Arrived back into Hamilton at about 7:30pm, so improved on previous time by about 15 mins.
Not sure that it's the most pleasurable way to spend a day, but certainly a healthy sense of achievement and I get to keep the shiny badge.
