The US election process seems to drag on forever, the election is not until November 2016. Even after such a long drawn out process the final choice is only ever between a giant douche and a turd sandwich. (To quote the political scientists at South Park.)

Each time I have wondered how it came to pass that the final choice was so uninspiring. Recently I came across a podcast that goes some way to explain that: "Common Sense with Dan Carlin". None of the states that hold primary elections or caucuses are exactly typical. Iowa, from memory, is not an election, it's a caucus which I assume means that only registered party members get a vote, but Iowa is predominantly white and rural and as such hardly typical of the larger USA. Neither New Hampshire nor Arizona are really typical either.

None of the states with large population centres such as New York or California get a say in the primaries. So I sit and watch from afar hoping that the election doesn't turn out to be between Bush the third and Clinton the second.
