Am I the only one who cant find half the models on the lams approved list?

I'm looking at buying a Kawasaki EX650-A and the seller insists its LAMS approved, but it's not on the list. However the models 'EX650FDFW' & 'EX650FEFW' are on the list. After some extensive googling I cant find a SINGLE mention of either of these models... Where are the NZTA pulling these bike models from? Surely I'm not the only one with queries about this...

I'm wondering if its a similar situation as what happened with my first bike, I bought it of motorad in wellington and they sold it to me as a GPX250R, I call to insure it and its registered as a EX250F... Turns out they are the same bike (thats my understanding of it anyway) just with different names.

Are the NZTA trying to make getting a LAMS approved bike this difficult or am I just a little bit slow...?

p.s. I have contacted the NZTA and my local dealer to see if they can shed light on the situation, but I figured I might as well see if anyone else is having issues.

Knowing if it's LAMS approved is basically the only thing holding me back...

Not LAMS approved, too old. They didn't start bringing the restricted ones in until LAMS became a thing in NZ in 2012.

If you don't mind looking a bit further away this is LAMS approved (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-927724737.htm) and is probably just as quick as the restricted 650.

Makes sense. Oh well, guess you cant trust everyone you meet on the internet (who knew?). Pity too, looked like a nice bike. I guess ill be revving out the 250 for a little longer then. It will be interesting to see if I get a reply from the NZTA about it thought.

Also, FJrider, thats largely the attitude I had towards it, however I thought that it might have been a gpx250/EX250f thing, different countries seem to get different model names and imports throw things off and stuff...

That 400 does look pretty nice, I guess thats my next bike to look into haha.

Thanks all

Talk to a Kawasaki dealer ... and get THEIR opinion on it ...

Yeah, there are a lot of full power 650s on TradeMe being sold as the restricted LAMS versions.

Example 1
(http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-944774645.htm)Example 2 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-845076188.htm)
Example 3 (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-892995376.htm)

It can be entertaining sometimes when it's an auction so the public can read the Q & A section (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/tourers/auction-933163703.htm).

That first example was another one I had seen, I also get amused with the auctions on 'LAMS' bikes that then have a list of power increasing modifications half a page long... I really do wish that there was a better system for managing learner legal bikes. It just feels so restrictive... Oh well, just have to get into the CBTA stuff

they used to have a system that made it simple, anything over 250 was out. lams with all its problems is still better as long as people do what you have done and check it out. don't trust dealers to know because often they don't, same thing happened to my son, he almost bought a 600 (cant remember what make or model) that a dealer told him was lams, he rang me and i checked for him and it was not lams approved.

It cant be more than 150kw per tonne.

Basically you need the kw of the bike
Divide that buy the weight of the bike plus 90kg for rider and gear.
X that by 1000.
That will give u the kw per tonne.

So i think the bike your looking at isnt LAMS approved.

See if he has a certificate saying that is LAMS.

or email NZTA and give them rego number.they will tell u if it is.

They take a couple of days to get back to you tho.

Cheers

And if its not on the list then you can apply to have it added. Until its added its not on the list and not legal.

A LEARNER rider believing the system is being "RESTRICTIVE" to learner riders ... :bleh:

Perhaps ... they get a FULL license and ... THINK WHY ...

It's no different to those folk misrepresenting mopeds as power assisted pedal cycles. They claim they can be ridden without a licence, so disqualified folk hook onto them.

No different to people on car licences riding scooters at 80 kmh and claiming the licence exemption coz it's a moped.

Private sellers can pretty much make whatever claims they want. Bugger all accountability.

People get licences to avoid potential adverse outcomes.

Funny. We are getting quite a few older dudes who have been riding for years who are now getting their Class 6. The reason a few give us that they want to do the right thing in the face of getting their kids to stop nagging them.

People get licences for a variety of reasons Azkill.
