Pelican hard luggage options?

Has anyone used these as a top box option?

Not purpose built like a Givi, but probably cheaper.

a few adv riders use the side cases so they must be pretty tough

They're tough, probably tougher than some (most?) of the Givi gear, but with that also comes weight.

I haven't used them, but my boss has, Caribou luggage is also similar etc.

Used a couple of cases like this for some hydraulic torque wrenches the last couple of days.
They looked rugged.

We hired the tools, sent them back this morning - great useability
not sure about size but this one above looks about the same.

They had some blank thick cutout foam pieces to keep the tools in place, there is a guide in akl that can do the cutting.

One of them had dimpled foam top and bottom, the other had a harder foam - almost plastic type

they didn't look lockable.

Jaycar sell some Pelican lookalikes which are quite a bit cheaper. I got some even cheaper Kinchrome Safecases from Bunnings some time ago and they have survived some pretty good crashes off road. Latches are really hard to use though, I will probably replace them with the jaycar ones, just for the better latches.

I use this as a top box, and it's quite rugged. I think it's the same as the one that Jaycar sells.

Since then I've seen similar cases at Supercheap Auto and Bunnings that are slightly cheaper. They also have a deeper body with a shallower lid, which seems useful. The one at Bunnings is only $80, which seems like a really good deal. I happened to write down the SKU and make:

I have a small pelican case as a topbox. It's fine. Waterproof, rugged and secure. Permanently fixed via bolts to a rack.

I also have pelican side panniers from http://www.cariboucases.com/ . These are good but very heavy and overkill if it is just me on the bike. If I was doing it again I'd go with soft luggage and smaller. I just don't need the space. One big advantage, they don't jut out past the bars, so I know my width in traffic.

I've used Pelican in some very austere conditions for carrying delicate medical / computing equipment. Laboratory analysers / malaria test kits etc. IMO they are very robust and keep contents intact through airport security / luggage handling. But I think overkill for motorcycle equipment... Because they are very heavy.

For my own gear, I go with Kriega. Not cheap either, but cheaper than Pelican by a long way and extremely protective/waterproof, and much lighter than Pelican. Depends what your priorities are.

My priorities are beer and happiness. Not sure how that relates to luggage though.
