View Full Version : Fog vs. Headcold

I find I tend to fog up quite nicely, especially when stopped of course, and the only way to fix this (cheaply) is to leave the visor just a smidgen up, but that leaves the way paved for freezing your face off, and by the end of the ride there is a definite headcold. It all compounds a bit because I have to wear glasses half the time, contacts the other half. Anyone know any good bottles of liquid/helmets/breathing techniques/etc to combat this fog phenomena?

There is only one: Pinlock.

What make and model helmet do you have?

Don't listen to the Fog City geeks either. They are a nightmare to live with when it's dark.

It's an FFM... something. Yeah. And I ain't never heard of Pinlock or Fog City, but rest assured I'll tell them to cut off their tassles.

pfft

fog city can be picked up for about 20 bucks, Cycletreads have a whole range and they work brilliantly, basically they are a clear sticker for the inside of your visor that acts like a kinda double glazing and they work fine

I have a fog-city and I think its pretty good. The only beef I have is that it said that it was 'clear' but does have a slight tint to it. Not tooooooo bad for night riding.

There's no Pinlock option for FFM, so you're stuck with Fog City. Fog City is crap. It might be $20, but you end up ruining 2 so it costs you $60 for decent result. IMO they are dangerous at night, and should come with a disclaimer.

would pinlock fit on a kbc?

They used to be solely a Nolan product, but the range has expanded.

They also do a DIY kit. Sorry thealmightytaco, I didn;t realise they had one.

Check the site out.

The pinlock system on my Nolan is the only system that I've used that both works and has no negatives like streaking and blurring at night. I can close all my vents, fully close the visor and breathe entirely in and out through my nose and it doesn't fog. The part of the visor that doesn't have coverage from the Pinlock insert will fog (just a think strip round the edge) whihc demonstrates how well it works.

Not as good as a pinlock or even a fog city but it's cheaper than a very cheap thing;

Take a clean cloth, and a very small drop of sunlight liquid. Rub the Sunlight liquid on the inside of the visor until it's "gone". The visor will now not fog for an hour or two.

I had a Fogcity on my HJC. Ended up chucking it as I found it IMPOSSIBLE to clean without scratching it

Good short ride solution though TonyB, but bollocks on having to do that every day, I'm a busy man. Kind of. Busy/lazy. And $20 for scratches doesn't sound too coo'.

I was thinking of cutting a little block of rubber to sit on the bottom lip of my visor, hold it just so at the optimum point of foglessness. I've found that point a couple times, but I imagine that'll all change once I get brave enough for motorway ridin'. But yeah, I remember seeing that trick on F1 races in the rain back in the day, back when it was more fun. Oh the times we shared.

The trouble with having your visor slightly open is that it will probably leak around the top edge in heavy rain- water will run down the INSIDE of the visor, which aint fun, infact it's dangerous.

I need a new visor for my HJC after my racing off- might see if it can come with Pinlock

i had that problem with my shoei ---- thought there was no solution 'cept leaving the visor up [or the soap trick -- which works with bathroom mirrors, too ;) ]
then - got a different helmet & magically the problem has vanished

I've found the Fog City to be excellent, it's also not a problem at night unless it or the outside of your visor is dirty. Keep things clean and you'll be right.

Found out after applying the Fog City that the HJC-CL14 comes with an attachable fog guard

To clean a visor / fog insert without scratching: DON'T SCRUB THE F#%$&*NG THING,Soak the bugs for some minutes to soften them, then wipe with a clean wet 3M SCOTCH BRITE HI PERFORMANCE CLOTH ( $3 at supermarkets ).
Wipe dry with a second scotch brite cloth,it will leave a streak free finish.
Rinse the wet cloth free of bug parts and clean both cloths regularly in the wash, don't use fabric conditioner (it prevents the cloth's ability to absorb water)

Abso-bloody-lutely correct. I was stationary at the lights with hail pelting down, my visor was fully closed and there wasn't a trace of fogging.
You can get pinlock kits to fit brands other than Shoei and Nolan, although it will require drilling the visor for the pins.

When stationary, open visor or exhale through mouth directing air downwards into jacket collar.
When moving, keep visor closed but remember to always have small vent under visor open for a nice cool breeze keeping visibility fog free. If it still fogs up as it can do in the depths of winter, lift visor up a snip. Even if it's raining, you'll still not have any water enter your helmet.

Tried it, when you're all huff'n'puffed it only seems to add another 30 seconds before you're too fogged to see who is who.
