Was having a look at this - I like the cafe racer style so gives me a good starting point if I want to make any changes.
Any thoughts? Happy to look into any other suggestions too.
Cheers.

It is your money and you are entitled to do with it what you want. But be fucked if I would ever spend $3,800 on a GN, custom parts or not.
So to answer your title question, no I do not think it is a decent buy at that money.

Nope.
GNs are a starter bike, nothing more, get a cheap one, then look to step up once you learn the basics of riding.

Buy a cheap one that has a good chance of passing it's NEXT WOF ... and sell it then to get your next (bigger) bike (for the same price you paid).

To be fair, I probably should have specified that this would be my first bike.
If not then, what would you guys recommend?

I wouldn't pay more than a grand for a gn that modified.
You say you are new to this, the person who made these changes probably was too because that's who rides gns.
It is also unlikely that a learner with a gn budget could afford a pro to do the work.
If you still want it get an inspection and see how much you really want to spend.

Get yourself to Kerikeri ... maybe. You'll learn heaps on the way home.
And have a good ride.
Has some merit ...

A bit closer to home and should be worth a closer look ..

Thanks for the quality reply - I'll have a really good look at those.
What would you suggest in more of a classic bike? Not really a fan of sports bikes - don't have anything against them just doesn't really interest me much.

Bandit
That's my old baby Bandit, was a superb example when I sold it and a perfect learner bike

My suggestion is that you learn on an unfaired/unmodified/unmolested bike - till you get your Full and some experience on 2 wheels.
Then start looking at nice bikes (Classic/Sports/cruiser/street fighter/whatever tickles your fancy)

Dude, you can buy a brand new Aprilia ETX/ STX with that money and still get $400 change!

First bike choice shouldn't be a practical. Take something cool.

Nicely put, totally agree.
To OP, if it's gonna be your first bike, think of it as just something to get you to your full licence. Even a modded GN will bore you to tears in a matter of months...or maybe that was just me?<_< Yep, I had one as a first bike. But if you're gonna grab one, get one that's stock or near stock.
