View Full Version : Dickheads on group rides

Why is there always one?

Twice now I have been abused by some dickhead that thought that they owned the road just because I deigned to split up their group overtaking on a passing lane in my car. Guess what dickhead, you are sharing the road, and riding in a group of 10 bikes at 80-90 kph on the open road does not mean you own it.

There is a certain amount of arrogance shown by a lot of road users from time to time, not just bikes. If you got the finger/s for using the road as you should, then that reaction is simply laughable.

Only one? As soon as some people get in a group they set their brains to "Park". They can be tough as Hell though 'cause there's ten of them and one of you.

Reminds me of the Black Power gang who were very interested in a Land Rover parked in a remote rest area late at night, until shotgun barrels slid out the window.

I find riding by myself reduces the dickheads to 1.:msn-wink:

I only go on group rides with riders I know these days, one KB group ride about 5 years ago was enough...seeing broken bits of boat/trailer

and Guzzi's all over the road on the Coro loop where the Guzzi had no WOF and the rider was on a restricted, fortunately the driver of the 4x4

with the boat saw him lying on the road in time and avoided him...at the cost of his boat going in the harbour and hitting another rider who

had stopped to help breaking his arm.

Biggest issue I see with group rides, apart from group mentality, is everyone playing following the leader, instead of reading the road ahead of them.

Went for a ride last summer with a few mates, and a mate on an older Ducati lost a front caliper bolt.
Luckily he managed to stop it safely, but the ride home with no front brakes was interesting.

Considering he could finger tighten one of the bolts, he still kept respectable pace through the twisties. Something I doubt your average Harley rider would be doing with working brakes.

You sure you're not the problem here? 90% of cars are happy to drive around at 70-80 km/h slowing to 60 for the occasional corner only to speed up to 95 in "passing" lanes. All they accomplish is get 1 car length ahead in 1+ km of passing lane thereby totally fucking up the opportunity for others to be able to pass the entire line of slow twats that can't negotiate the open road to save their lives.

Thankfully it's not an issue if you've got a powerful machine but BY GOLLY is it frustrating when driving a slow as shit econobox.

Well its funny you should mention that. I hate group rides these days. Had an airhead on an airhead not notice we were braking. I saw him closing in and moved over but not enough and the boxer hit the GS11s muffler cartwheeling him down the road. A mate was standing up ready for the impact I deflected (bought me a beer later).

But then Hardley shoots past on the left. He was at the pub and said. Aww there was no room to stop. He was told everyone else managed except the cretin who wasn't looking. Fred Flintstone brakes.

Went on a Ulysses ride out of Tauranga four or five years ago,. This was first ride with the club on my new Boulevard M50, I'd ridden with them for about a year and a half on my learner cruiser 250. There were two Harley riders, four sports bike riders and me. While the two Harley riders were discussing something, one of the sports bike riders (Yammie R6 rider) came over and started abusing me and my bike - "Why did you buy that piece of shit? My bike has the brakes of an R1 ... " for about 5 minutes. And disappointingly none of the other sports bike riders said anything, no "Hang on," no "That's enough".

So my bike doesn't have the brakes of an R6/R1. But I don't ride like an F*wit so I don't need them. The M50 is fit for purpose, good enough for the way I ride.

Next day I handed in my membership of Ulysses and have been riding and enjoying it on my own since.

Yeah, there's always a dickhead in a group ride.

The newer harlies with Brembo's stop as well as any motorcycle these days.

I have seen a few Harley riders bin it after a brain fade, I have also seen a few jap riders do exactly the same. Group rides can bring out the worst in some riders, they also show who has no self control and who to keep the fuck away from.

I had an attractive young lady buy me a beer after an ambulance run a few years ago. She followed me on the run. Her on a GN and me on the old sidecar. There was a good acident just after a plonker ran around us and back ended a 4WD. (If I was just 30 years younder and she was a little blind we would have made a lovely couple).

I keep away from group runs if I can, espcially the public ones.

Seriously though, it just seems to be the kiwi way. Plenty of car drivers take it personally if you overtake them; plenty or riders just can't help themselves with the, oh wait what is the expression? "f*ckin cagers" etc. Seems to be in our I'm-the-most-important-person-on-the-road mentality.

...and 'I just can't wait any longer, now's a good time to pass''

Saturday.. Motorcycle behind a car/caravan combo heading towards us, Motorcycle pulls out to pass car/caravan combo, he was close enough for me to know it was a Honda Blackbird, the yellow lines probably should have alerted him that is was NOT the time to pass. He pulled back in.

Sunday.. SUV is passing a small truck when we (in our car) appear on the scene, luckily for us, he was NOT committed to the pass because there was nowhere for anyone to go. There was a slow vehicle lane 300m further on for him to use, his chosen moment was NOT the time to pass. He pulled back in.

That's pretty shocking tbh. I always run in to other riders, be it on my own or with others, and end up just chatting endlessly about our common passion. It doesnt matter if I like your bike or not, I'm not about to rag on it unless you act like a twit.

Been there-done that!

Yonks ago the caliper bolt holding the two halves together went awol on my '81 Sporty.

Screwed the two halves back together the best I could and taped the caliper to the handle-bars with a spanner between the pads and carried on to the rally - and bumped into a dude with an engineering shop that had the correct bolt and a tap to re-do the thread.

But yeah, an 'interesting' ride trying to anticipate the need to stop or slow down.

Funny how this is the second post about the Ulysses being crap to ride with. I have ridden with them a lot and they are no different than an other group really. It will differ from branch to branch with at least one that I know of being sticklers for the speed limit with a no overtaking rule. In the Far North branch we tell everybody to ride their on ride. So, yes, some will Rossi off but that is up to them, we always regroup and have a TEC so no one gets left behind. You will always get dickheads in group rides and the bigger the group etc. i ride with a bunch of people, up to a dozen, all of a similar pace and we never have issues, but all good things come to an end and people move on or stop riding, you know how it goes.

Yeah those guys had a very different experience to mine too. I went on several rides, overnighters and others, but the local branch then needed to cater for some born again or newer riders and adopted an appropriate pace to cater for them. That was completely reasonable, but too slow for me so...

The "group" rides I do these days could really only be loosely described as such. There are designated stops and it's each to his own between those.

the point is is if there are say 10 bikes riding in a group at 90kph why do they have problems when you overtake about 5 of them on a passing lane. Its like splitting their group into two is a capital offense. A group of bikes is not a single vehicle. Its not a car and trailer, it has not right and shouldn't expect to be able to travel in a contiguous group if its not doing the speed limit.
