View Full Version : I need advice for a bike for restricted license

Hi everyone.
First a bit about myself. Got my learner license late March, and my restricted 2 months later. I've done the ProRider Urban, Bronze and Silver course on a second-hand Suzuki GZ250 and now I want to switch it out for a few reasons. The main one is that I am really uncomfortable with the vertical posture on this cruiser after long trips. I had a minor fracture in the lower spine a few years back, and with the vertical posture all road imperfections go through the entire spine, which begins hurting after about 2-3 hours of riding. Second reason is I am feeling very uncomfortable on the motorways, because if there is even a slight climb the speed immediately drops to 70-80 km.
I want to switch to a naked bike, because the legs will provide extra suspension for my back, and also the possibility to switch posture easily (slant forward laying on the tank for speed and even less pressure on the spine, or vertical for easy cruising at low speed).

So my question is, I want a naked LAMS approved bike around 400-500cc, that I would be able to use for 2-ups after I get my full for short rides (obviously nakeds are less comfortable for 2-ups compared to cruisers).
Which models would you recommend to look at?

Posted that one up to a friend looking for a LAMS bike. Looks good for the money.

Well thanks to everyone who replied to this thread for bike recommendations. I've been checking up on trademe for interesting offers but in the end got my bike from Red Baron.
Went in to do regular service on my GZ250 and asked them to appraise it too and they also showed me some of the soon-to-come imports from Japan. So I immediately fell in love with a 2003 cb400 sf.
In the end I traded in my gz250 for that beauty.

So I immediately fell in love with a 2003 cb400 sf.

Nice choice. I had a 1990 something model for a few years.

Good choice, I love my CB400, although it's the '92 model, so a bit older.

I remember seeing a review of them once in which it described them as 'the blandest of bland bikes". I one man's 'bland' is another's 'trouble free'.
