Am in the market for a new bike and there is nothing I fancy in Dunedin at the moment. Off to Welly in a couple of weeks so want to have a look around. Normally drop in to Wellington Motorcycles but I heard it has closed, so that leaves Motorad and, if they still exist, Sawyers up from the Basin. Is there anything else within walking distance of the CBD these days?
And if anyone says use the search function sod off, I have never got it to work.

Wellington M/c's have moved to petone, If you are feeling adventurous, catch the hutt line trains, You also have TSS at Ava, again an easy walk, both less than 5 mins walk form the respective stations.

Yes, well, I figured the KB massive could give me the lowdown much betterer than Google. For instance the first result was Wellington Motorcycles which I thought was shut so that was no use. Now I have some names I can use Google to find out how far away they are from the office.

It might come to that as I only have a couple of hours spare in Wellington. Have been window shopping for far too long, this time I am buying. Instead of narrowing down the list though it seems to be getting longer every day. The little voices in my head tell me that one day I have to have a GSXR750.

go to one bike shop, and take a test bike out for the day, you should cover all the shops on that...

why you say that
Brands like those (or any bike brands for that matter) deserve an outlet that's interested in selling and servicing bikes, particularly those that have oddball (specialist) requirements that make them vulnerable to warranty claims.

So the 'change of management' hasnt actually improved matters then?

I've never set foot in the door, but Motorad helped me out in a pinch with zero notice, when I needed them to send a clutch lever to Palmerston North for me... They didn't have one in stock, but pulled one off a bike in their warehouse.

With some of the bigger shops out in the Hutt you will be pressed for time to visit the lot. If you have an ideal of what type/brand then that narrows your visits down.
If you go to Boyle's Kawasaki then at least you might get to met Pete, who's a damn good bloke, just decline his coffee. They only sell used bikes.
Motorad on Vivian St stock MV, Aprilia, Kawasaki & Triumph so you get some variety.
TSS have a large stock of new and used and sell KTM, Suzook and those CamAm trike thingies.
Motomart as said sell BMW, Ducati and Honda and also a large salesroom. Clean Motorcyles on Hutt Rd have the unusual brands, Benelli (beautiful looking bikes though) and Confederate and.. something else?, was Buell until they flopped..again.
Long haul to the Upper Hutt Yammy dealer (Maidstone).
As suggested, take out a demo bike , ride it around and trade it in.

Take one on the 1000 miler, and come back and say that, it's a sprotbike. Prob' the best 'all rounder' that you could really use the performance available on NZ roads, is either the SV650, or the VFR800. And that's coming from someone who owns/owned 'ubertourers' or 'big' bikes.

I wont turn this into a piss fight ya man as we all have our own opinions, and mine are based on all my racing history, just saying, as it always is each to there own, and I agree with the OP posts re a GSXR 750 100%. He would need one mod doing to it though, more high speed rebound in the forks, they are bloody shocking, apart from that, a brilliant bike. It is NOT just about streight line tourgue either, any one can fast in a streight line, boring! SV650 with front and rear std suspension, are total crap, have never ridden the honda, so cannot comment.

No of course you wont turn it into a 'piss fight', I only commented about the bike, but let's see, 'ya man'??? Instantly turn to being derogatory to prove your point...
good luck that you base your experience on racing, I would accept your greater knowledge on that. My comment is based on 41yrs road riding as main/only transport, from performance 2T's {like an H1a etc}, to owning and riding cruisers, big bikes, BMW boxer's, Guzzi's, ZZR, FJ12, to name a few, and in my earlier years doing frequent trips across Europe from UK to Spain for long weekenders. SV50's might be 'boring' to you,but I'll stand by my comment for 'joe public' an SV/VFR are plenty adequate for enjoyment....If we could all use 750/1000cc sprotbikes to their potential on the road, we'd all be called Valentino Rossi, which, 99.8% of us are'nt.

Who uses any bike >125cc to its full potential on the road? When I started riding 25 ish years ago the GSXR750 was my ultimate. I always wanted one but every time I came to change bikes circumstances dictated that I couldn't. Now I have the chance and I think even though I am pushing 50 it is something have to get out of my system. Other options considered are Speed Triple (one at Motorad but hard to justify that amount of coin on a bike), Z1000 (but none in Dunedin to try for size), BMW R1200 R (because I am over chains but again, too many $$$) and that's about it. I still can't bring myself to go Italian as I am an all year all weather rider and need something that works every time. My current SV1000 has never once let me down. I was always told there is no substitute for cubes but I have had a GPX750 and FZ750 and they were plenty powerful enough. I just worry that the GSXR has shrunk over the years and I have gone the other way.
I would not expect to use a 750 to its full potential on the road down here, I never have the SV. You can't for more than a brief moment on the road anywhere but that is the same for an SV650 or anything else over 250. The problem is the only reason I ride is for those brief moments, not for chugging along like a two wheeled car.

I have to back up Shaun on this, much as it pains me. I had a K9 750 and did 30000kms on it. 800km days easy. Fabulous bike and toured very comfortably and effectively.Had I had it revalved for NZ roads, I think it would have been simply near the perfect bike for covering most riding bases well. I really like Svs and have had 2, but the GSXR was heads and shoulders better imho, especially in the comfort stakes. I have not ridden a VFR so cant comment on that.

There are a lot of road bikes better than a GSXR750. As a sport bike though the Suzuki is right uo there.
I had a VFR, the quality of finish is on another level compared to most - and especially compared to GSXRs. Fast enough, almost comfortable enough, my only reservation about comfort being that you need to be doing 120 or better to take the weight off your wrists. And that V4 engine. What's not to like?
Having said all that, the Speed Triple has a decent level of finish, (lots of stainless fasteners), and one of the best engines available for road use.
Then again if it is going to take a sprotbike to scratch that itch the GSXR750 is a brilliant choice.

I have to accept that Shaun and yourself are correct as a 'sprottbike' that the gsx750 is good overall. At my age?? I'm just not interested in leaning over the bars head down, arse up anymore. :pinch: Last sprotbikes I rode were, ZXR 750, TL1000R FZR1000. :shifty: Preference is for big, lazy bikes, that I can leave in top gear.
Loved the MT-01, and will not regret owning one, and on roads like the forgotten highway?? Almost the perfect bike with that huge amount of torque. Over a distance though, as last years 1000 miler showed, very flawed for fuel range. Guess it's riding styles?? Having learnt in the UK, done the Euro trips, motorways etc, {what astounds me here is a SH is often what would be classed a 'B' road in the UK} my emphasis was covering distance at speed. So maybe I ride with a 'touring style' fast but not 'quick' . current bike CB1300 is 'ideal' engine wise, top gear, wind it on and off the power.

I lived in Invers for 14yrs, so know the 'southern roads well' During that time Owned a Guzzi Spada, and an 1100 Cali < from new, the Spada was 'reasonable' but the Cali only let me down once {pushrod end collapsed} and I also ride 365 all weathers. They aint what they were 30yrs ago for dodgy electrics and paint/chromework. Give em a thought!!

I've owned a fat arse 98 injected SRAD GSXR750 since brand new and now done around 110,000 km on it. At the time it was my dreambike of choice race replica and I closdely followed SBK and GP etc and had raced clubmans in winter series. Now I'm just a doddery old fart wobbling about but in the meantime the GSXR has been a fantastic 'road' bike.
Its toured the ENTIRE south island twice, decent road trip around most of east coast of NZ. Several cold kiwis, heaps of commuting and Sunday scratching, less than 5 track days and seen more gravel roads and DOC 4wd tracks than most bikes have seen roadworks.
There is something in the GSXR geometry that works for NZ roads. I would buy another one tomorrow but the road policing climate makes it a poor choice compared to other options.
Given the amount of wet eather and at times neglect it has been flawlessly reliable touchwood apart from one known warranty/recall issue and one other assembly fault (that didn't stop it) and had one coil ignition fail but hey after 90,000km that's alright....
I don't like doing big kms on bikes but the GSXR does it well when needed often with my tank bag overloaded with about 10kg of camera gear!!!

Mind you - typical Suzuki too - just killed the used market for the next 5 months. So if you were thinking of selling your existing one it's just lost thousands

I'd love another sport bike but at 68, my wrists, knees and back are all creaking and it would lead to a world of pain  . For another 3 grand on the top of the Gixxer 750 price, I've just bought the GSX-S 1000, just clicked up 2000 km and love it to bits. The upright seating position is really comfortable and it's fairly easy on the knees. Brutal acceleration right from tickover, tempered by 3 stage traction control which is perfect for NZ roads - couldn't give a stuff about top speed. Easy to set up throwover bags for touring too. Reckon it's the closest thing to a pure sprotbike I'm likely to get at my age
