View Full Version : StreetStock racing.... choices to make

hey everyone
iv been racing in buckets for a year and a half now and am realitivly compeditive (5th last year) . i have recently been looking into streetstock racing and have been looking for a bike, then a good mate of mine Ivan Juggins said his dad had a CBR250RR that i would be able to use in the winter series next year, which is bloody wicked of him  . so im all excited and get my dad to take me to manfield today so i can have a talk to them and i get told that the bike is going to be black my favourite shade, and have some sponser, now im overly excited!!!. here comes the hard part, as im watching the racing steven scculion (SP) came to me and informed me that the vic club was looking at buying two RG150s for new racers, and that my name was on the list to get one :blip: but now i may have two bikes to ride, CBR or RG, i asked steven whats the best one to use and he said that the rg would be the best because all the other learners have the same bike and it would make the racing more skill based rather than whos got the best bike. which i like the idea of but i like the sound of the CBR better cause its fourstroke and iv newly found that i do well on fourstroke (new bucket bike). and i was watching the racing today and there was one ZXR and i think it was a CBR but they were actually slower than the rg150s!! i thought it would be the other way round.
so what do i do??? if the RG150 falls through (cause its not confirmed yet)i will still get the cbr, but i like the 'wank factor' of having a cool 18000rpm black 250 sponsered to CBR race. so can any one fill me in with the choice i should make....
im going to be test riding the CBR (hopefully) at the next manfield open day, but am yet to find out anything about the RG
all in all, i would like to make a huge thank you to the Juggins family for thier offer which is totaly radical very thought full, and and a huge thankyou to steven scullian for his involvement in helping more younger racers reach their potential.
thanks for any cotributions
Cheers, Glen

Generally, the 250/4's are faster in a straight line. I think with a good rider on one, they would whip all the 150's easy. But thankfully it's not all about the fastest bike at this level. As show yesterday, a good rider on a 150 will win over less expireanced/smaller balled riders on faster bikes.
I would like to try a 250, but won't be buying one because of the extra cost.
Also would cost more to crash a 250 I would think. (Crankcase damage etc)

I haven't got much of a racing background and only been riding roughly 2 years, but I did fairly well against the RGs at manfeild. They were faster around the corners mainly because I didn't have the confidence to go faster, but then I inhilated them on the straights. In round 1, the first race I was getting used to the track and was stuck behind a few RGs at the start. Once I got past them I caught up to the front runners and came 3rd. Race 2 and 3 were a shame though. In race 2 I went ahead of the whole pack, averaging 2 seconds faster each lap, but then I leaned to far over (I think) and fell off, and I couldn't pick up the bike untill an official finally came over at the end of the race to help pick it up. Race 3, I was following the front pack, rear wheel slipped on cement dust and a flew off, and an RG did the same and crashed into my bike wrecking it. Crankcase was torn apart, fairing was wrecked, etc. and it has taken 4 months to fix. I've completely missed out on the rest of the season.
So basically, both bikes are good. CBR has the advantage out at manfeild, but I'm not sure about taupo being a tighter track. Hopefully I'll be racing there now my bikes been fixed up and I'll be able to find out.
If you look on MyLaps on the vicclub site for Round 1, I had the fastest lap in each race :wari:

thanks for your replys,
from what i ahve herd the RG will be the safer option, but the jot so fast option, and its still a race aint it?? but i dont wan to be winning by power but by skill thats why im leaning towards the RG, but as i said, i dont know for sure if i will get one yet...

This is going by my thoughts but I am thinking your best bet will be the CBR because if you want to get 4 stroke time behind you for your FXR then the CBR's giving it to you a whole shit load of it. If you saw the last meeting as well the 4 strokes were running in fourth place the 2 strokes won so I dont think it will be an unfair advantage but thats me my thoughts on it but its also my 250 as well so yeah

From riding a 150 for a few seasons here in the south island i would have to agree that the 150's are a more practical bike because of the cost and are an excellant machine if you want to step up to a 125gp bike.I have just moved up to a Suzuki SV 650 F3 bike so the RG was still a very good machine to learn on even tho I didnt want to ride a 125gp machine

Hey I totally disagree about the RG150 and the step to 125GP I made the step at the end of last season and there is no comparisson an RG150 forgives quite abit the RS will spit you in the air. THe handling is way different the brakes are way different the speed is way different I know cause it took me till the second to last round of the Vic Champs before I came to Grips with the 125 and what did I come from last year 150 SS on a RG. The thing with the good all CBR is that the future of racing is heading 4 Stroke so the CBR gives you a good look into the future like the cbr600rr :doobey:

Go for the RG. Its cheaper both in the short run and the long run. Cheaper to buy and when it crashes or blows up its cheaper to fix. I'm thinking of selling the CBR for one whilst its still worth something

I would say go with the RG mate. At least you know if it falls through, you still have the CBR. Also, who says you can't race the CBR in your spare time?

But the question is....
Did you Ever come to grips with the 150???!
59 Ivan Juggins 1:35.664 - Best time Manfield, short track
Thats the Very best recorded time I could find for you Ivan on your 150.
tell me if I'm wrong.
And as for getting 3rd in the series on GP125's this year, and a step on the podium.
Good thing there was only 'bout Two other riders in your Class this year!! :bleh:
I look forward to passing you again on my 150 next year.

I dont know Paul Wheeler this years 150 street stock champion at that round you found was only cutting 1:33s 2 seconds faster so this year I would have been faster and also my Final race on the RG150 was at Taupo and I was sitting behind Daniel Labrum last years 150 streetstock second place getter. Then when I had a go on the RS125 Jay Lawrence second place 125 GP NZ racer said I was ready for the step and also Hamish Laing numerous 125 GP winner and TT Title Holder as well as 250 GP's said I was ready for the step. And ask RG100 how far ahead of the street stocks I was before my bike siezed. As well as how close I was to Adam Chambers in second. Also our title had more than 3 bikes it had 6 I had to earn my 3rd place from Mason Wilkie NZ motoX champion. I dont see you beating me when I was on competitive jets not safe jets.

Paul Wheeler won on consistency not because he's a fast rider.
(and a illegal braded brake line)

But how many times did you sit behind him??
There goes Daniel,, I'll sit behind him. Oh there he goes again,, I'll sit behind him. Ooo, there he is again, this time I'll sit behind him!

All in fun chap.
I did notice from checking your times tho, that your getting better and better each round. You'll soon be a force to be reconned with.

So how many races did you end up winning? You must have won a couple to finish 3rd in the category. Just wait till next year, i'll be there to kick your arse on my 125 :blah: Are you going to ride your 125 at the nats in any rounds?

Well I'm glad you asked that,
cause checking the mylaps.com records, it show young Ivan was the Last Place finisher in EVERY GP125 RACE he entered in the Winter series!!
Which is why his 3rd place at prizegiving is so laughable!

I find my RS125 really easy to ride (I thought everyone does). Specially if you compare it to my bucket, man that is a demon, have to treat it with respect or else it would be instant highside. Leathal powerband, specially seing as its a 4-stroke 125. Compared to this my RS is a walk in the park

Getting 3rd place in the series under those conditions,, You've got to be prepared to take some :Pokey:
Be hard to pick fault with my riding.
My bike doesn't keep me out on the track long enough to show any of my faults! :slap:

Yeah it took quite a bit of stuffing around, but it finally works now. I got a 94 TZ250 rolling chassis that i found at the dump a few months back and then managed to fit my hybrid cb125 engine into that. The engine is actually 2 cb125 engines welded together modified to make it 150cc. it puts out 45hp at the back wheel and revs to 15000rpm. Its a beast, but now I'm getting used to it I am learning to get faster on it.
Only way you can make a bucket like an RS is to have a MB100 in a RS125 frame. Anything else and you're wasting your time.

Ivan gets to ride around all series, getting help from all the top name, landing podiums and free helmits,,,
and all I get for my wasted money is to push my bike back to the pits! :brick:
Its still not fare to say shit like that I mean how many years have you been racing?
For the record, I've only had THREE full race days on a bike that ran well.
