View Full Version : Wonder what would happen

I wonder what would happen in Motogp if ALL the teams were suddenly required to use only bikes available for retail sale with no aftermarket parts of any sort allowed (except safety gear.)
Would there suddenly be a heap more front runners.?
Would there be a sudden rush of "limited" production bikes the public "could " buy if they had the money?
Or are the top 6 or 8 riders really in a league of their own?

Too many hypothetical questions for me, but My opinion on riders is, the top few are in a league of there own.

Honest opinion from a cheat. A novel thought ...

I wouldn't be MotoGP, it would be superstock, which already exists. The whole point of MotoGP is racing prototype machines. Isn't that a bit like asking what it would be like if squash players used a bigger, fuzzier ball and played over a net instead of into a wall?

my point really is-would those top few guys still be in a league of their own ?

Well if things go to plan the moto gp is going to get more interesting when the cleaner more powerful two strokes can back into play 500cc 240 HP and a wider spread of power than the current diesels.
Cheaper to run than the current bikes too.

There is merit in the idea, if it were to take the format of the top ten guys in MotoGP all being put on identical stock bikes for a race. I suspect the top half dozen or so would qualify as aliens, regardless of what bike they're on :headbang:

Back in the day Kenny Roberts used to have all sorts of people training out at his ranch dirt track
It was not uncommon to have the likes of Jon Kockinski Wayne Rainey Eddie Lawson and Kenny Roberts plus others battling it out on std XR100's
I read Wayne used to win most and Kenny as well, when John started winning to often they pulled his bike down and found he had done some mods including lightning the flywheel So they made it slower and never told him.

6 engines a year to (-;:nya:

Tell me about it they used to throw in rings every session but only as they had the heads on to check the carburation anyway.
Pistons could do 2 GPS inc 3 days practice and cranks 2000KM bit that was pretty much it. Other than the crank gears they could do a season on one engine easy.
Not only cheaper to buy, Both cheaper to make and cheaper to run.
plus sound so much better
