Said to be a 3 day 1400km ride for 2016. Interesting.

As reported on the Epic Events website (http://www.epicevents.co.nz/page/87-motorbike-events+dusty-butt-db1k)...
By Popular demand, the 2016 Dusty Butt is going to be bigger, better and longer than before....Covering approximately 1400km, and over 3 days.....You'd be mad to miss it!
19th, 20th & 21st February 2016

And the fine print.... All ride information will be available as soon as entries open in November. Please remember entry numbers are strictly limited, and this ride will fill fast! Please see the red tab to the left and like us on facebook, or join our mailing list as an adventure rider so you will be the first to be informed when entries for this iconic ride will open.

Has me wondering where the overnight stops will be and at what extra cost, be it entry fee or needing the extra nights accommodation or both.
Yes, no, yes, no, yes.... but  :wait:

Would be good to see some more info. Where is Thursday night briefing? Course details?

But, I've registered. Now some prep and planning.

I see accommodation in Fairlie is already a bit scarce.

Typically unless they do something different this year you'll not see the course details/gps files until about one week before kick off so about all you could do was make sure the bike has fresh brake pads, good chain and sprockets, pack the spare bearings etc etc and also get yourself ride fit and mentally prepared.

Last couple of years the brief has been at the Football Club several k's up School Rd, Fairlie. Before that it was at the Gladstone.

Ahhh crap, just breezed over your other posts and sounds like you would already know that stuff as this isn't you're first rodeo.

That's OK TA. I was asking about the briefing because it might help determine where to stay in Fairlie. That ship has sailed, there is none left for Thursday night.

If I'm wrong and you know of any, post info here.

Anyone talking about a Thursday prelude ride? I've enjoyed the Friday rides in the past.

The Fairlie accomidation situation is a bit unreal really, people must have booked prior to the event registrations opening, I wanted to know the ride entry fee before deciding either way and I'm thinking maybe not this time. I actually might put the money toward crossing the straight for Epics Long Way Round Taupo ride in April.

Back to Fairlie accommodation, looks like it's tents or find someone with a spare bed in their room willing to share or looking to split costs... any volunteers?

Good luck.

I am in this year.

Accomodation is now a worry. Don't own a tent.

Yes, it's an endurance Adventure ride on mostly public roads and farm tracks of which some resemble an easy trail ride, some a dirt highway and some parts are actual state highway. The bike must be plated, mid sized ADV bikes seem to be the best choice, the bigger stuff just wears ya out.

Email Claire or Gordon at Epic events as I suspect that they have `Pre-booked` most of the accommodation at Fairlie as they did this year.

If that is the case you should be able to get a single bed in 1 of the pre booked rooms.

I'm registered, riding with three other Dusty veterans, sorry but I won't be organising a pre DB ride this year as I'm am trailing bike to Fairlie due work commitments. We are camping in Fairlie and have a motel booked in Alex to minimise gear required, I'll be on my blue '03 WR450F with rack n Safari tank sing out if you see me, hopefully I'll be shiny side up at the time!

I can give you feedback now if you like, as far as loop routes from Alex go that is a rip-snorter, nice job mate :niceone:

For those that haven't ridden some/all of those routes, nzexc has lined up a tasty treat!

Saweeeet looking forward to it, hopefully won't be too hard with the whale.

Fuel charts arrived today , no excuse for me to run out, but missing a couple would put me near the end of my range using 12km/L as an estimate:weird:

The long awaited files have arrived.

Day 1 and 3 same as most previous years. Day 2 down south looks like it will cover some spectacular territory.

They haven't skimped on waypoints. Some of those files may be too big for some.

What sort of track is the Piano flat challenge section? Do-able on a R100GS?
Definitely not doing the Awakino challenge this year as the zigzag will be a killer/nigh on impossible without a team of willing pushers.

I would say it is do-able at the moment as its very dry. I went though last weekend on a DR650 with TKC80 on. Had to pre walk three spots to find a good line, and only needed a hand once (my mistake) other wise the rest is no problem.

Will be others around to help out anyway

Looks awesome! Getting excited now :)
Fitted new tyres and front brake pads today.
I think I'm gonna split the GPX into three different files. One for each day with only that days tracks showing. That'll avoid having to zoom in and out and scroll around to check which bits are included in the current day. I'm using Backcountry Navigator (android app) and one thing it doesn't do that well is display the track names clearly.

New tyres and brakes for me too. Weather looks like it may be a bit damp, but at least it will keep the dust down. Hopefully the rivers won't be too high as the beemer isn't that shithot in deep water. Fortunately very easy to undrown. See you there.

I haven't seen the files this year but I'd always split the tracks so that you never see any cross overs or double backs on the gps screen for any given section, just makes it soo much less confusing on the ride. :niceone:

So I've seen the route now, does look pretty good.
Going to be interesting trying to remember which segment your on and which comes next on the gps though. I'd stitch it together slightly differently to save some stopping but then that seems to be a thing with me, I like my way.
