G'day all,
I have just moved to NZ-Christchurch from North QLD, I am originally from Auckland but have been away for a decade.
I shipped my BMW K1200S with me which should be released from the ports very shortly.
I am a mad keen biker and have travelled some large distances in Aus. I previously had a Yamaha FJR1300 and some Aprilia's and a few other bikes. I have been riding since I was 8.
The South Island Roads are very new to me, but from what I have seen so far look like a lot of fun with some decent back roads to have a play on.

Cheers
Brendon

Welcome, enjoy the South Island roads, watch out for camper vans and tourists driving on the wrong side of the road and have fun.
(there are some characters on here so don't be too easily offended)

Shit 10 years. Could have got less for murder if you'd stayed in NZ. And you will talk funny now.

Welcome to the bumpy city.

Thanks guys,
Yes I do have a bit of an Aussie twang. I went up to Kaikoura in the weekend (by car) that looks like an awesome spot for a few rides. As I should have my girl back today or tomorrow. I am thinking of a small trip either west or south. Any suggestions?

Akaroa and some of the Peninsula Rds are a nice day trip.

I prefer to drop the hammer coming from the Akaroa side of the hilltop so would head out to Port Levy, gravel it (not a huge gravel ride) to Pigeon Bay, up and along the summit, drop into Akaroa, stuff my face and then fang it back via the main drag to chur chur via Gebbies Pass then over into Cashmere or via Lyttleton for more face stuffage then through the tunnel and home.

You can also shoot over to Little River from Port Levy and do the hill there and back.

Or you can just take SH75 there and back, but the city to Little River is pretty dull.

Otherwise, Hanmer is an easy day trip, or maybe Arthurs Pass. Some of the river gorges are really nice places to nose at too, but more a destination than the ride sort of trip.

There is a 'back' road into Kaikoura too fwiw.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the recommendations mate. My bike is still at the compliance place. I went there today and sorted the paperwork and it may be available tomorrow, fingers crossed as it has been 4 bloody long weeks without her.

...I ride with my girl around the Lake, (Ellesmere), most days. Country lanes and cow shit but quiet and traffic free. Coffee at Leeston or a jug at Southbridge pub or the Tai Tap pub on the way home. Have never seen a cop on those roads ever, not that we go like shit, anyway. Just another recommendation for you. We try and get lost but it doesn't work as the Peninsula sticks out on the skyline wherever you are out there.

Hi welcome to Christchurch. We could definitely use another BMW rider here (too many Japs).

See you on the road, and don't forget to wave! :)

yeah I have noticed the amount of japs and HDs, where is all the Aprilia's, Ducs, KTMs etc. I have seen a few older beemers like K75,K100 and a few GS's. Have not seen a KS like mine. I see that Avon City has a KR in there, but its the one without ESA. I like my ESA. You will notice my bike when you see her, its the tri colour that only came out in 08 Silver, Blue and Black with blue rims and has a Ventura rack and dark MRA double bubble screen.

I will try the lake.

There is no work in Aus. highest unemployment ever at the moment. The country is in recession, so basically its stuffed. Heaps of Kiwis coming home. But yes I do miss North QLD, wearing shorts, thongs and singlet's pretty much year round.

BTW, I just picked my bike up and got its number plate, rego and WOF, F me that's allot of crap to hang off your plate. In QLD its just the plate and there smaller plates.

There is weekly Kiwi Biker's Wednesday Night ride (thread here: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/142318-Canterbury-Wednesday-Night-Ride) other than that there are almost rides to Akaroa every sunny weekends through social invites.

If you wanna see what people ride in Christchurch have a look at this FB page:

Hervey Bay is a favourite spot of ours. Beautiful there and the restaurant on the waterfront is amazing!

Harvey Bay is nice place. If you have time shoot up to Bundaburg and go to the rum factory.

I went to Akaroa yesterday. Really scenic place and the ride through the range was fun. There where a few nutters going at stupid speeds through the tight bends and not staying in there lane. I think they thought they were Rossi lol. I stoped at the Hilltop bar and also Little River. I recently brought a pair of Astars Apex leather pants and tried them for the first time. They are a tad long and the bloody zip digs into my ankle inside my boot. But hey are way warmer than my dragin jeans that I normally wear. I need to sew the zip into my Berik Jacket as the existing zip does not fit the Astars one. I do need to get a new jacket as my one is 100% perforated leather. A bit cool for this weather.

Yeah you get all the power rangers who think that so long as their wheels are on the correct side of the road they have nothing to worry about

They are the minority though. Just wait till the camper-van season kicks off  It is a beautiful spot and a fun road at almost any speed.

Man I see the Leeston cop almost every time  Have never been pulled up though other than the Springston checkpoints.
More often go the Coes Ford way these days for something different, but I come from the North.

Good wee restaurant cafe type place in Dunsandal too if you and your lady feel like something different one arvo :niceone:
