View Full Version : Petrol-diesel mix

What with the rising price of fuel, does anyone know how much diesel I could mix with a tank of petrol that would still start and run ok in my old petrol injected nissan bluebird. With a blowtorch to the block it would probably run on straight diesel but that is a bit inconvenient. Might be tempting to revert to producer gas generator on the running boards but no running boards.
Wouldn't try it in the bike as it is cheap enuf to run. Would the timing need to be altered?
I have run a bike (inadvertantly) on a high percentage of kero. Obviously had enuf petrol in the carb and lines to start and heat up and it went the 30is km from Parbatipur to Dinajpur (Bangladesh) but then had problems starting. Ditched the kero and refilled with petrol and everything was happy.

Perhaps you should just buy a diesel.

I end up with a lot of comtaminated fuel with people,or pump attendants putting diesel in their petrol car,or petrol in their diesel.I used run some through my Escort,a couple of litres to a tank,so like one litre in 40....it ran ok,a bit down on power and smokey, the motor was somewhat worked and I don't think it really liked it.So then when I got a diesel I thought I'd run it in that.I would leave a 20 litre with the top off in the sun for a couple of weeks to evaporate the light ends, then I'd pour 400mls of 2 stroke oil to regain some lubricy, then a couple of litres per tank.
When I got the injectors rebuilt my diesel guy rang me up warning me I had better check the car they came out of because it had petrol though it,he could tell by the seize marks.Ooops.
So,don't....dumb idea proved by one of the dumbest testers on this site.

50/50 can work in a petrol, an trick for cold starts in winter or something, but through injectors I wouldn't be keen, could easily clog them up. And don't ever wanna put petrol in a diesel, that's just suicide, will burn way too fast and way too hot. Can end up with an engine that wont stop revving the shite out of itself if you're not careful.

A diesel normaly won't run with petrol in it - lower flash point and all that, but burns in a narrower air fuel ratio,so it's most often a no go....although I have seen one take off on petrol,it was pretty hard to stop alright.

In very cold climates you can mix 1 L of petrol to 20 L of diesel to stop it freezing solid, but in NZ it usually dosen't get cold enough to freeze diesel anyway.
