A second-hand scooter?

I'd like to buy a scooter for around town quick journeys (with possibly a topbox) in Invercargill which is a flat city.

But at the same time I'd like a scooter which could also handle summer open roads in the Wakatipu basin (heavy traffic, 15k distances max 80k is fast) and slow Dunedin speeds for my student son.

Looking at a 2013 Honda Today 50 with 6K+.

Any thoughts on this and other choices please?

Not sure about legality of 50cc on open road but I would try to get a 125 if possible. Does mean getting your licence but will be a lot quicker and also safer if you're on something with a bit more grunt.

50cc are legit on open roads. Just not motorways.

That said, I took a 110 to Cape Rienga and i wouldn't want to have done that on a 50.

2 strokes are better.
4 strokes are a little less mucking about at the servo but they need the oil changed as well not just the transmission fluid.

Dont buy a 50. Ive ridden my workmates UZ50 a few times and it is diabolical. the worst problem is lack of power. So old Asian grannies in Daihatsu Miras are right up your arse as you plop along at 50kph indicated flat out. I used to own a Suzuki 125 scooter. It was better. would do 80 indicated, kept up with traffic. bigger wheels better brakes and more storage. I love scooters for their practicality. I dont like the attitude they inspire in other drivers. which you dont get so much with a bigger bike. the mental process such as it is seems to be "Oh, a scooter. that is a 16 yo schoolgirl so I will just turn left in front of them, not give way when I should, follow really closely and generally I will be an obnoxious asshole.

I really like the idea of those MP3 scooters but its a bit more spendy than what youre talking about. but they self park and you can just sit at the lights twist and go and the suspension unlocks. Yamaha do one also.

TL;DR: get at least a 125

The Yamaha is a bit smaller than the MP3 at 125cc. Also, the suspension does not lock up, so you still have to put a foot down. Having said that, they're quite good.

burgman. Wont need a box cos there's ALL that space under the seat. (seriously, i can get two kids and a medium size dog in there) Wil also handle long trips and high speeds.

i cant recommend a ts185 highly enough. Lazy powah, lazy steering, very forgiving cheap as shit.

if it HAS to be a coot... Do what everyone else says. (a packrack on the back of the ts will fit two crates if you're inventive)

Yeah and if it was just for me then I'd have loved a C110 Postie bike or similar. However my son only has his learners license so a 50 makes sense in the interim so he can go to his holiday job.

Assuming I use it too, I'm only 4k from work on city streets.

Plus there are a group of guys who go on scooter rides and that sounds like fun.

Eventually I'll change it for a proper small bike 100 - 150.

Don't listen to all the 50cc haters. Just don't buy the WRONG one. Def go 2 stroke over 4 stroke.
Aprilia SR50. Cheaper rego, not that $429 bullshit.. Chuck a sport exhaust on it and derestrict it. Good for up to 90kmph on stock 50cc piston.

And don't get pulled by a cop for speeding around town. Because you will ;)

I use mine mostly around town and up to 50km trips on the highway, Nelson-Motueka etc. I haven't blown it up yet, over 7000km on it since de-restriction.
Good honest clean fun.

In comparison with a 4T 125, the 50cc scoots are far better value for money.
I rode a 125 Piaggio Fly from Auckland to Nelson and that would only top out a 90kmph as well, so owning it just gave the gubbermint the pleasure of raping my wallet an extra $300 in rego a year.
Personally, I'd rather put that dosh into go fast bits for a fiddy.
