View Full Version : You cannot choose who lives with you

The End

What kind of world do we live in where we cannot choose who we want to live with us?

Stay offended, Indian association, as the man was being completely reasonable with his requests - flatmates who speak English and have clear communication

The fact is, Indian food smells. This is a fact. Compared to other cuisines it is a very aromatic food. Some people don't enjoy that. Some people don't want to smell that everyday.

PC rubbish if you ask me.

For the record, I've seen plenty of Trademe ads for flatmates wanted stating very clearly "Indian only" "Asian only". As someone who is neither of those ethnic groups do I have a right to be offended?

I lived with a curry munching couple. Every farking night they would cook the stuff. Could smell it right through the house.
Used to piss me right off that they were better cooks than me... I'm sure my 2 minute noodles cooked in 1.5 minutes had the same effect on them though.

Oh yeah, and they were both euro descent Kiwis...

It cuts both ways as you've mentioned though. Plenty of Indian and Asian only adverts. It's just another bullshit half arsed article stirring up shit.

I do think the fact that so many immigrants go to different countries and then remain in social clicks with people from their old home rather than becoming part of their new home and culture is half the problem. Defeats the purpose of migrating in the first place I would have thought, and antagonises the locals.

The presumption being that all Asian/Indian people speak poor English. That's called racism. He could have requested that only people who speak good English and eat mild food applied - that's not overtly racist. There's a world of difference between that, and saying "no asians".

Its our immigration policy at fault here!
Its only natural to congregate if you import so many people that they have enough souls to create their own communities.
Not their fault its ours! NZder's do it, take surfers paradise in Aussy for example.
If you want integration you have to let smaller numbers and a more diverse spectrum of people from different countries in.
AND being fluent in the local language, would be a good start to integrate new comers into the NZ way.

Secondly back on topic re the Indian thing, The golden rule in rentals is never rent to an Indian, you can never get the curry smell out of the house.

Fair Go had a story along those lines. A motel owner refused to rent to Indians as the cooking smells were near impossible to remove. He had a sign saying something like 'no cooking curry' and got the serve from Brian Edwards.

There's a presumption that all people that smoke stink & ruin your furnishings & chattels too.
No doubt that wrong also.

Indians think you smell like putrid milk and rotten meat. Something to do with a diet heavy in dairy and beef.

But ehhh. I still want fucking vindaloo.

^^^ This.

I understand his reasons (they are valid) but the wording is at best exceedingly poor, and at worst racist (note - the wording is racist, not his reasons)

taileys smell bad.

Rollies generally not noticible. Pipes and cigars tend to smell warm and rich and delicious. Maybe just me.

The only other thing he could do is refuse every applicant that did not speak English to his level of liking. and refusing every person who would cook a curry. Then tell them that , and then see the PC ar$$holes up in arms. For F--ks sake, every one should have the right to choose who they want in their flat. Nothing to do with government or any other self centred group of leeches.
Good on him for placing an add so it does not waste his and other peoples time. We need more people like him in this world, prepared to be honest and not time wasters.

Advertiser in OP should have just said "White male Kiwi guy seeks flatmate .... blah blah blah". Doesn't contravene the Human Rights Act and many of those he doesn't want will filter themselves out.

Bottom line is that you can't advertise in a range of ways but you can still make your decision with all the predjudices you have as long as you don't verbalise them.

Just tack on a "btw, I'm a little bit racist"; to filter out all the 'undesireables'

Fucking gotta find a flatmate in palmy soon, perhaps I'll get someone else to write the ad though...
