Trying to find an aftermarket muffler for GB500TT

My GB500 came with one of those cheapy 17" (430mm) reverse cone shorty mufflers you see advertised on Trademe & it is stupidly loud... like make Harley riders cover their ears loud. I've failed my last WOF on exhaust noise.

The factory headers have been modified so a factory item will no longer fit. What's needed is a muffler that is less than 20" (500MM) long with a 45mm inlet. It should be chrome or stainless to match the style of the bike and be able to flow enough air for a 500cc motor. Done some research and repacking the existing muffler won't make a difference, also can't see anything suitable on Trademe.

I'm having real trouble finding something suitable. Is anybody here running a muffler like what I am looking for & if so, where did you get it from please?

Budget is about $250 - $300 max or I may as well look to get a full system made.

Those small ones are rowdy.

The packing is made from the belly-button fluff of old Asian men, young children from the villages collect it and weave it into exhaust baffling. Unfortunately like the youthful dreams of the old men the packing blows away very quickly.

You will be able to remove the baffle from the rear of the muffler and repack the core with decent 4-stroke baffling. However the length of the pipe is also very short thus always going to have a bark. While the core is out you could fit a db killer to it - I did this some years ago on similar longer ones - made my own insert and riveted it to the inside of the core - worked a treat - bounced the gasses enough to shut it up.

I used a piece of exhaust tube off cut (free) made alternating hacksaw slices through it and indented them with a hammer and chisel. I have a photo somewhere I'll post if I find it. Or the ones in the image below are available.

Worth a try - cheap to start with and if still too loud you'll need a new muffler - also search TM for a suitable donor.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just had a look & a measure up and unfortunately there is no straight piece of pipe long enough for even a short baffle to fit in there.

+1 for cycle works but $2-300 won't cut it. That's enough to get,. . . well, what you have.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody, I've ended up ordering a British-made 19" reverse cone muffler & will see how that goes. At least it has proper baffling in it!

New muffler arrived yesterday & it's much better, I can actually ride without earplugs if I really want to & it still has a great big single sound. Bolted straight up to the existing pipe using the existing mounts too.
