View Full Version : Would I be wasting my time with an E8400 & HD6850?

So not looking to spend any moneys, saving up for a proper build but to tide over & play with in the meantime would I be wasting my time by going e8400 & HD6850?
I'm not expecting to be rocking the latest n greatest with this setup maybee just some of the past few years but I don't want to spend any real money on a "fill-in" setup either; I'm looking to spend shit all to nothing on this as any cash moneys here takes away from final build budget & this setup I should be able to pickup for shit all.

Games I could be interested in are State of decay, Witcher 3 (which I read is playable with HD6850), Dead Space 2-3, Dragon age, WoT, War Thunder, GTA V, Gotham City Impostors, etc maybee Dead Rising 3 if I can get away with it
For this setup I'm happy with 1080 at 30fps med gfx

It should be noted this system (or really any system) will be over-clocked to shit mainly cause
a) why not? it's not like I have anything to lose &
b) I have some massive heatsinks & fan flow to more than compensate for heat, so again why not? I have everything needed already. The only limitation on overclocking is gonna be the HW itself

Me personally - I wouldn't bother.

My last GPU was an HD6850 - I upgraded for the BF4 release (so 2 years ago) - admitedly I'm a snob and like to run everything on Max/Max - but depending on your budget, I would suggest a better option would be to got a similarly specced card, but from the later range.

Like an R9 270 -which you can get for under $300 according to PriceSpy

See that would just rip 300$ from the final build so far too much cash moneys to waste on an intermediate, I'm looking sub 50$ here w/ the above purposed arrangement costing around 20$ (would be borrowing the HD 6850 from a mate)

Yes.

But isn't that the actual point?

Well that depends if it's gonna play some games from the 360 era than I'm alright with that waste of time (as it will serve 2 purposes, games obviously but also to prototype/configure my case for final build; the case is not made for PC motherboards)
If it's not gonna play games from yesteryear than for me it is a complete waste of time & not worth the effort I'll just wait till I have my final build
