Hi All,

So upon finally actually buying a roadbike I thought it was time to stop lurking and actually make an account - yay!

So anyway, I've just recently purchased an old '89 VT250, great price so wasn't too bothered about the rough cosmetic bits.. since bringing it home and sticking it in the shed for a fine day, just noticed a slight amount of oil around 2 of the clutch cover bolts... bugger. Any suggestions how bad this could be? I'll put up some photos tomorrow when the light is more cooperative, hoping this isnt too big of a deal. Noticed a very slow leak from the fuel petcock as well, will pull that apart as soon as I can and see what to do.

Thanks all!

Welcome!

I haven't owned a VT250 myself so take the following with a pinch of salt... I have had a couple of older Hondas though.

My take: the clutch cover isn't that big a deal. Unsightly and annoying but unless you're leaving big drips of oil whenever you park up, don't worry about it. You'll have a great time on the VT250 and probably move up inside two years, it's definitely an older bike, and any big money you put into it is money you can't spend on the next bike.

The fuel petcock could be an issue, though. Check that it isn't fuel hose leakage (easy and cheap to replace; get the sizes and whip down to Supercheap Auto or Repco). If the fuel hose is OK (not old, stiff, cracked, flowed into shape on the barb), then it's the petcock or the washer sealing it to the fuel tank. Clean everything and double-check for where the leak is coming from, sometimes dirt can carry petrol a long way from the source.

I've tried to sort out problems with old petcocks, basically not worth it. Aside from the rubber washer inside being specific and hard to get, the metal itself tends to wear or corrode. Better to just get a new one.
