short story: no electrics while bike is off and indicators are constantly on instead of blinking

long story: I was riding around aimlessly on saturday trying to decide where to go, puttering around central auckland when I thought Id head out to murawai. on the North Western I noticed someone pushing their bike along the side. now being the kind biker that I am I did a quick sprint through the burbs and the back to the motorway and pulled up beside him. he had ran out of petrol. sokay, he gave me $5 I wizzed up to BP got a can and filled it up for him. met him back there (now at the bottom of an offramp) filled 'er up but it wouldnt start. tried crash starting it a couple times but he had apparently drained the battery trying to start it without petrol and there was no fuel getting into the engine.

I offered to jump it with my little battery which we had to remove to get close enuf (we were using the cable for his indicators) I let him do it assuming he was better at this than me but in doing so he sparked the baby and welded one of the wire ends to it. couldnt get his bike to start still so I put it away said tooodleooo and off I went (I have a kickstart) went off to murawai and had a little look around. the engine was a bit funny (missed twice) but otherwise ok.

but when I stopped at the BP just outside the road to murawai I noticed that my indicators were blinking like a mad thing depending on the RPM of the engine. I thought that was odd but didnt notice it more until I got home and found that they didnt blink at all anymore. just solid on.

So. my battery. buggered I guess. can I drive on it for ages to make it charge up again or is it rooted?

I would say that maybe when connecting your battery you might have damaged something as well. Otherwise it may be time for a new one.

you may have spiked your ECU dude. Hopefully not but using thin wire to jump start a bike was not your brightest idea.

ECU? electronics Control Unit I assume.

the battery was totally removed from my bike when attempting to jump the other one at this time. how would that damage my ECU.... like unless thats built into the battery, or im just totally wrong.

Hmm.
oh are you guys saying that when I plugged the battery back in it might have shorted some stuff.... ohh thats not the best.

Yea well if you accidently connected the pos terminal first, you may have shorted something. Get a new battery first and see if that fixes it.

Spring to mind

Turns out that the battery is fine and I just didnt connect it to the positive terminal well enough.

interesting thing to know about my bike though. I can remove the battery completely and it runs fine (assuming you dont need a horn, or flashing indicators)

Thats good to hear Pyro.

The reason your bike will be running without a battery is because it has a dynamo (generator) that will give you spark for the engine but won't put out enough to run anything else electrical.

edit: it was more than 24 :) there was texmo's jaggermiester + his dodgy 18month old tui's

*cough* um yeah.
thats why I was riding too. when I ride I leave the hangover about a metre behind me.

the nut for the positive terminal is lost I thought I could get away with just putting it on there, after getting the battery checked at 'battery town' on fanshawe I scraped off the metal and tried it again and it was mint.

so yeah
head up to repco at lunch I reckon. although my luck it always rains on me as soon as I leave for lunch.
