View Full Version : Best Harley for around 10k

Family friend is looking at getting a Harley, been out of bikes for a while, not sure why on either of those. Tried to talk them into a Buell , but hey each to their own.

I don't really know much about them, but what's the best model out there at the moment to go for with around a 10k budget? Seems to mainly be sportsters, which seem to get a bit of shit but actually look like they're more ridable than some of the bigger options?

After a trawl through trademe this is what I found and thought about a few options. Feel free to add your thoughts:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/cruiser/auction-986510444.htm

Good price for KM's, doubt it has been hammered at all, but has been sitting.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/cruiser/auction-985926417.htm

Untested setup (only 400kms), shorter fuel range (what should you expect from one of these anyway? 150k?) but should be much more responsive than a standard 1200?

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=982486249

Few little extras, but price is high compared to the one above.

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=979120413

Impractical as fuck. But looks kind of 'interesting'

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=932250384

Wild card. Wrong brand, over budget but would be a way better buy than a sportster?

I didn't really ask about pillion, but assume 2up will be rare and short if at all.

Won't get a decent one of those for 10k, and they seem to be set on Harley.
If it was me it would be Triumph, Indian or BSA before Harley. For better or worse I do like the look of a few of the Victorys too.
That said, the hotted up Sportster is something I would give a nudge, although the lack of any brake or suspension upgrades probably make the engine work a little redundant when it comes to giving it death? Never ridden one though so all assumption.

Sporties are great fun. Don't get any HD with a chain though...they're fucking horrid. Don't get one with the 8L peanut tank, they're fucking useless. The Nighters with the 13L tank are far more practicle. Hot rodding them is easy and relatively cheap.

They're just really harsh and horrid to ride. No cush drive in the rear wheel (the belt takes up most of the shock). Belt is far nicer to ride with.

We were ALL beginners at some stage.

It's 100% OK to be one.

If someone likes a bike, or a type of bike you don't like...that's ok.

$10K? Casbolts had a couple of well priced Sporties in there some weeks back. Was not looking for Hogs when last in but may be worth a call. They are next to the local HD dealer and get a fair number of Hogs as trades ........

Me - I like the Sporties - the wee one is gutless and I would avoid it unless it has a big bore kit - the 1200 pulls just fine.

Hey man, don't be so hard on him. It's probably not his fault.

At a guess, he was probably raised by a well-off family, that set a high bar. His father might of had a strong leather belt, and his mother may have only hugged him when she wasn't drunk. He may have also been a victim of bullying at school, and now has become a bully himself (online).

He's clearly worked hard for everything that hasn't already been given/gifted to him, or he may think his ascendancy the same level as the rest of the hard/smart working New Zealanders is exceptionally special, and now he is a big fish in a small pond.

Big City life™ is for losers, and Mike.Gaynor will let you know that living in a small New Zealand rural town™ is the bees knees, especially since Aucklanders have either retired to his small town™, or bought up all of the surrounding houses as investment properties, holiday homes, (or to commute from), which have inflated the equity of his ego and/or house, which has also had the added flow-on effect of employing his services either directly or indirectly.

With all of the (Auckland funded) infrastructure going in to his small town™, it's no wonder that you're jealous of him. He now has more roading access to other towns in his region than you do, and because of chlamydia infested tourists from Hamilton.

He rides a big boys bike, and his scarily super-human ability to have ridden every bike known to man, and his keen perception of which one is the bestest, means you should just shut the fuck up, because your bike is probably not the bestest, and added to his expertise with accountancy and buying retail stuff, his shit is next level yo, so there.

In conclusion, you big windy Wellingtonian: Go blow a bag of kittens.

Go Harleys, rust in piece.

If you're referring to the FXR, they were certainly best of the old bunch, and the chassis is def better than the later dyna, but the 1340 is nowhere near the engine the twin cam is. Later six speed boxes are better to.

All of my bikes have been chain driven so I don't know any difference. I agree the maintenance can be a pain in the neck or back. I wonder how good the scottoilers are. The only down side I've been told with belt drives are to be careful on gravel and stones.

Also thick, gluey mud, which can get packed in and won't clear the same way it will with a chain. Happened to a workmate with his LS650, due to a commute involving a wheel track cut through the front lawn.

Stones / gravel can snap or damage a belt if they get trapped between belt and pulley, the belt guards are there for good reason.

Go looking, there are private importers bringing in the 750.
Even a couple in the dealerships.
The street is a darn good bike for a bike that is scratch built.
What?
Not copied from anything else, does not use any major parts from anything else, has its own style and persona.
Name another bike that is so "new" as in a scratch built,
But then not many of you buggers would understand that either. New or scratch built.
For around 10k, a street is a good ride..but what the fuck do I know......

I'm not a cruiser fan at the best of times, but I cannot fathom why anyone would consider a HD when metrix bikes like this exist. Clearly a better bike, and for a fraction of the cost.

But I guess you don't get to wear a rocker, attach tassles and pretend to be a hard arse for the weekend.

And have a 'Chopper Reid' stained mustache (Stained because of Park Drive Rolly constantly hanging on for dear life)

The leather vest/jacket with 856 badges attached from the 856 events he has attended over the years. And the unmistakable the Lion Red induced waistline hanging over the faux bull denim jeans which barely cover the 1970’s etched Tan leather cowboy boots.

Agree and especially on a budget when spending. 10 grand equals not much Harley I would expect.

I got 125hp, cobra exhaust, grand worth of luggage and touring seat, 240 back tire and huge torque for much less.

Isnt a valkyrie a Harley look alike. Only Honda used its existing engine in the frame for a lack of good big twins to use.
Im only asking because its likely many Harley owners think any cruiser that is not HD is a look alike.
I quite like Harleys but if you cant afford a fairly new one alternate brands seem to make a lot of sense.
If beer only came in one brand peeps going to drink wine for variety.

Got a new to me 1998 honda valkyrie 1500 cc 6 cylinder tourer in my garage today....

I am more then impressed:
Very big large and wide....
Makes my Harley look small.
6 cyl sound like a ferrari.
All the bits look very solid and well made.
It says that is made in The USA....

I have fallen deeply in lust.

Anybody has/had one?

awayatc
21st December 2016, 05:02
Bit of a stretch to say a valkyrie is a harley look alike...
Apart from the fact they both have 2 wheels and a handlebar....

Had my Harely for about 8 or so years and loved many things about it...

I also love my flat 6 valkyrie....which is an entirely different animal in every way...

Doesn't make Harley bad...
Just different.

Can judge and compare both.
How many Harleys did you own?

Wine is fine...just don't call it beer.
Only beer is beer

I have ridden a few but owned zero.
I do not mind them at all.
Im just pointing out you do not get much Harley for 10k under so if that the budget I would buy something else.
If my budget was 40k plus I would be tempted by the new bagger.
But if I had 40k to spend on a bike I would most likely trade my F4 on a F4RC at 64k.

I owned a Buell Cyclone and miss it. It was a gas. It caused more trouble than any other bike I owned including 2 900SSs but it was more fun than any inline 4 I owned for various reasons.

Except the ZZR1100. that was fkn mental but I was going to die on it.

I worked for a dealer that sold Hogs amongst other bikes and holy shit do they shift some accessories and shit and make a killing due to emotion and brand loyalty. Like HSV - old dated pushrod crap taxis tarted up and loved by millions. Slower than many jappas but outsell them.

Id own a harley for the record, just cant afford a decent one. By decent I Mean twin cam. DOnt buy an evo and thats from friends who fix Harleys.

But im motard / dual purpose shopping so what the fuck do I know.

And if you hate Hogs why look at a hog thread? I mean if you guys started a dickhead opinionated self righteous knob thread I avoid it cause it would annoy me. Just curious.
