I wonder if anyone has any other thoughts about this
The other Tuesday night I was returning about 10.30 from the North Shore on the way to Sth AKL on the motorway.
I encountered a rider on a scooter doing about 70, wearing dark clothes and almost no rear or front lights.
The rider merged lanes without indicating or looking, he was very hard to see.
I doubt he realised it but a couple of cars narrowly missed him in the darkness, this happened in a couple of places.
He was all over the lane and changed without indication.
I saw this and slowed/followed him for several Ks, hanging back so that other road users could see him. (I am ATGATT)
My question is what would you do as a fellow rider?

Pass him, move on with your life, accept that he will soon be a red paste smeared along the road.

I'd have done the same as you - become tail-end-charlie and made my higher visibility a benefit both to him and the other traffic on the motorway.

Came across a young rider on a Yamaha Scorpio around 8pm in winter on the southern motorway - as I was getting closer to him I noticed his rear brake light was completely off, yet his headlight was on. He was virtually invisible from behind - no reflective gear or anything.
Rode in front of him, put in hazard lights and motioned for him to pull over in to a safe spot.
He wipped out a pocket knife, took out the rear light housing and fidgeted with the wires until the light worked again and rode off...

Is there a minimum speed limit on NZ motorways? In the Philippines there are three expressway speed limits: Max 100kph for cars, vans, etc. Max 80kph for trucks, buses, and Min of 60kph.
Motorcycles of less than 400cc are not allowed on them. A bit stupid, cos a Kymco 400 scooter is legal and a KTM 390 is not AFAIK.

If we're being honest, I'd probably accidentally run him over

Probably minded my own fucking business, and let the universe sort out the ones not intelligent enough to try their hardest to keep themselves alive. Probably would have given him a kick on the way past too for good measure. Humans are as stupid as they come , fuck em all. :bleh:

Drop it into 3rd and pull a Mean Wheelie past him.....
In seriousness though - I would have minded my own business unless I had time to kill, then might have followed him to a set of lights and try and pass on some wisdom.

We will read about the rider in due course!
Cyclist on SHWY 26 0545 in the morning thinks it is okay to ride without lights from Tatua to Waitoa...
Pedestrian walking against the flow of traffic, no ability to be seen!
Jogger running on the road! when there is a perfectly good path on the other side....
We is all Idjuts! We are Human, we cannot think at times.....Natural selection.
But all of these fuckers above ruin my ACC levies....THAT is what pisses me off.....:tugger:

Gotta have something to put on youtube ;)
I've always wanted to ride through the train tunnels along the coast, but alas the will to live is too great. Maybe if I go right behind a train....hold my beer?

Actually, this is good practice.
Wot Tazz said. If you have to walk in the dark on a public highway with no footpath, it's safer for all concerned that you can see what's coming your way... so you can jump if you have to...

FWIW I think you did exactly the right thing to keep a fellow rider as safe as feasible. We're not all born experienced...

And at night, carry something reflective or a torch which you shine towards the road in front of you, not in the driver's eyes...
And, BTW, I think the OP did the correct thing...

Surprised me I had almost all of the thoughts of the replies on here when I first saw the individual who narrowly missed by about 1/2 a metre of being the meat in a 2 car sandwich - I doubt he even realised. He was very difficult to see and didn't seem to be at all interested in other road users, changed lanes at least twice without looking or indicating.
If we're being honest, I'd probably accidentally run him over  He narrowly avoided this one. I was tempted to wack him on the head as I passed
smash the cunt a few cars very nearly did, if he keeps it up someone will....
Ive followed riders home that have had failed tail lights and adjusted a couple so the brake light stays on. But only for people Im riding with. Yes I remember you did this for me and I appreciated it, I would do the same for others. This guy had working lights they were just crap, a lit cigarette would have been better.
FWIW I think you did exactly the right thing to keep a fellow rider as safe as feasible. We're not all born experienced...
Looking back now, I am happy I followed him at a distance, didn't crowd him or give him a speech, just made sure he was OK. I wasn't in a hurry so didn't waste my time. Maybe he will think about why someone would do that. Probably thought I was going to steal his bike LOL
Probably minded my own fucking business, and let the universe sort out the ones not intelligent enough to try their hardest to keep themselves alive. Probably would have given him a kick on the way past too for good measure. Humans are as stupid as they come , fuck em all. :bleh: I ended up doing this apart from the kick - that would have been too good. (fuck em all? too much time on your hands down in Gore?)
Bad day? There's a good day in Gore?:pinch:
Drop it into 3rd and pull a Mean Wheelie past him.....
In seriousness though - I would have minded my own business unless I had time to kill, then might have followed him to a set of lights and try and pass on some wisdom. He was doing less than 70, it was 10.30 at night on the Southern Motorway in AKL at Mt Wellington hill going south where it goes from 3 to 2 lanes, lots of lights but not the type you are thinking of. He didn't look the type to stop and talk.

This was my last thought as I passed him

I don't think there is an actual speed (could be wrong) but there is holding up traffic for no valid reason. Yeah some rules have good intentions but there's' an exception that often makes that rule look stupid

Nice but It wasn't me, yes Scorpios have poor rear tail lamps, its a wonder they don't put LEDs in but I guess its the model age we have here ATM

I agree with you. But sometimes I see dumb arse things someone does that kills/maims some other innocent person (rider or whatever)
I always find you cunts on bikes hold me up when riding the scooter on the motorway, suck it in and move over or ill make you look stupid Are you riding a scooter on the motorway? Always happy if you want to make me look stupid. There are multi lanes, you can pass anytime.

Actually, this is good practice.
+1 on that, I see far too many peds aimlessly walking on the road (no foot path), blindly hoping that some driver wont run them over.:brick:
Was very bad in the winter-early morning and they wore dark clothes (they don't need hi vis - anything that's not jet black)

Idiots walking on train tracks with their headphones on is good too.
Saw a young person with iPhone and head phones watching something, walked straight on to road into a car at an intersection, car had right of way. Ped didn't look just kept walking for a bit any way......
lucky not much damage... to the car.

If those are foxes, then the one I followed was most definitely not.
So is that what a fox hunt is all about.... I missed the boat on that one aye.
Must look up foxes see if I can find myself one....

For those with a fetish or two that might be perfectly suitable...
I'll stick with carrying a torch...
