what is the legal side of altering your frame ?, i want to remove some small tabs and brackets from an 80s tourer frame and add in a heat shield behind the motor, everything mechanical will remain standard, its more a case of removing 40kgs of plastic etc, need the heat shield as fuel tank is under the seat and was protected by an ugly fibreglass type shield that covered most of the engine, would it need to be certified etc ???

Talk with your local WOF agent that you use.
I'm picking that if it's just tabs, and little sticky out bits then you should have no worries.
Welding on bits, and structural mods are another issue.

Me - I'd just do it. The tabs are not structural unless they are holding something important like a rear shock ...... sirbox ones and the like - ditch them - who will ever know they are gone after you paint it.
Sounds interesting project - post some photos.
I recently ordered a small sheet of self adhesive heat shield to stick on the back of a set of muffler shields I have made to replace the ugly stock ones. Works well in reducing heat and the shields are attached to a header!

yeh i was going to line the heat shiel with adhesive stuff and wrap the header as its only about 20mm away (v twin) and maybe the fuel tank too as its about another 20mm behind where i want the heat shield (1mm panel steel), i asked my wof guy and he was "oh no too hard it will need low volume cert, it will cost you over a grand "
