View Full Version : Unmarked police vehicles

Dunno what the KB rules are on this, thought I'd post anyway and see what the outcome is. These are simply observations and do not specifically identify the vehicle or officer.
I've pretty much stopped using a detector when I drive, but the 4 km/h tolerance is a right PITA. So I fired up the trusty old Bel RX65 on a drive to Taupo from Auckland this afternoon.
Anyway, just after the Thames turn off on SH2 it starts beeping. A few km further along, after I'd overtaken a slower vehicle, it starts getting quite animated. By this time, I was following a silver VF wagon with very dark tints (not legal?) on the rear windows.
So I followed for a while and watched ...
I guess the cops in plain cars think they're anonymous, so don't worry about their driving. Or maybe they are just your average Highway Patrol driver???
So here goes:
His positioning on the road was poor. Hugged the centre line on RH corners, and drifted to the centre line on LH corners, then cut across to the left after the apex.
Pretty much ignored road works speed limits. Went through a 50 at more than 80, and left me way behind. Not the first cop car I've seen do this.
After a car overtook him, he tried to follow without putting his lights on. I was sitting at a true 100, and he very quickly left me behind. Aren't police cars subject to road rules unless in pursuit or an emergency?
I have his rego and may take this further, in particular speeding through road works. The rest is about what I'd expect, but blatantly ignoring a speed limit is pretty shit IMHO.
I'll leave it there, as I expect the cops monitor KB. But it was very interesting to watch how he used his radar ...

so... How did you determine this was 5-0?
It could have been an asshole with a radar detector and your radar was getting the splash from everything he was pinging...

I have no idea. Do you?
What I have learnt from using a detector for over 10 years is that they are trying to get smarter. But there's a lot of variation in how radar is used, so I doubt that there are any specific procedures.

Should have *555'd. Moments probably passed but you can send something through on-line.
IMO, waste of time, but whatever floats yer boat.
Tints like that are legal in station wagons from what I understand? If not, they are in commercial station wagons (or they were a few years ago), which a mobile popo invoicing division vehicle probably counts as.

Don't bother 'reporting' - it will serve no useful purpose, 'cept maybe get you on a 'watch/check' list..
'Rules of engagement' for mufti cars ( they are a significant % of cop cars) includes instigation/entrapment roles - as SOP..
They can even discreetly pace you while you rack up up a bunch of infringements, then pull you up & hand you the lot..
Wonder what the highway pursuit teams will use when the big Aussie V8s go extinct next year.. Euro-turbo, or US muscle?

I have the darkest legal tint on my wagon and the tints on the unmarked car were black in comparison.
Yeah, I forgot about *555. Dashcam footage would have been good also.

There are far more unmarked cars than most people realise, which you very quickly find out when you run a detector. Most of them seem to be Commodore wagons for some reason.
I generally take it quietly on main roads. Just too much of everything - traffic, trucks and cops.

Fair enough. I blacked mine out to 5% but had a 4x4 which I think have different rules.
I'm wrong about the commercial vehicle thing to. That is overseas now that I think about it.
Either way it's bit shit but there has always been double standards when it comes to those with the power and those without.

i was told, not more than 6 months ago, that any signage or tintage on my sick ass magna station wagon, would be illegal like a motherfucker.
"a ruling has come down" was the wording...
Also. Since cops have a fucking bootload of weapons, they probly wantem tinted so no murrays can see whats in there without breaking in.

The darkest legal tint is 35%. That includes the loss of light through the glass, so in practice, a 40% film is the maximum. The only exception, apart from the cops LOL, are Jap imports with dark, tinted rear windows, although this seems to be recognised informally. Last time I looked, Commies were Made in Oz. There is nothing in the rules about exceptions for police cars, so the unmarked car I saw yesterday should not get a WoF with that tint.
I found all this out when I got my last new business vehicle. Turned out that the tinting people the dealer used were applying tints that were too dark.
Can be a real safety issue, but again the NZTA and the cops don't seem to think so.

As mentioned above, vans, 4x4's and utes can have 0% ;)
I originally thought it applied to 'commercial' station wagons too, but I thought wrong. So that car did have illegal tints if they were below 35, but other classes can be below without issue.

To be fair though, if your job is penalising others for what are (not always) but quite often genuine mistakes, it should be considered fair and reasonable for you to follow those same rules that you enforce I would think.

No for vans & station wagons, anything behind the front seats can be completely covered (if you have 2x external mirrors) upfront has a maximum of 35% as does everywhere on a car

Going by the links in posts #20 and #22 that's only the case for MB (forward control passenger vehicles) "in which the centre of the steering wheel is in the forward quarter of the vehicle's total length."
Which some wagons probably manage to qualify for but not most of them.

So you are right guess things have changed since I was last interested in it, station wagons are no-longer included (guess also companies stopped using them for work vehicles with the rise of SUV's)
On a rear window of a car (sedan, station wagon, hatchback, sports car, convertible) – it must be completely within 100mm from any edge of the window.
On a rear window of any other vehicle – it can be fitted anywhere.

Even the paranoids who believe in new surveillance don't tend to believe it's being done for the purposes of issuing traffic fines.

Of course it's not! But they would look for keywords, and what do you think that might include? P O L I C E maybe?
I really have no idea if / what information the police monitor. But it's a public forum so it would very easy to do.
And if you think the cops don't take an interest in the online world, there are motorcylists in prison in the UK who were locked up on the basis of posting videos showing them riding very fast.

Going off topic for a short time now but I read of a case in the States 6 or 7 years ago where a woman took her boss to court because he hit on all the women in the office except her meaning she did not have the same opportunities for advancment that they did! Of course it was the USA and I don't know if she won.

Some forces in Oz use them to great effect, so I wouldn't be surprised if that idea is picked up. That said, the bikes are seen as expensive to run, plus they're slowly replacing the BMWs with cheaper Hondas...

in the recent weeks from Akl
went to Te Awamutu - Sunday morning saw approx. 20 marked police cars before I got there.
went to Rotorua saw a few and a few unmarked ones
went to Taupo saw almost no marked ones, the unmarked ones were following I guess.
but saw a whole lot of drivers who couldn't drive for shit, cutting blind corners, overtaking on hills, double yellow lines the usual.
none of them were police cars of any type
must admit though if they want to improve the standard then they must show it too.
:Offtopic:
Sometimes I think they should put more effort into reporting about the road conditions and have more influence on the roading authorities so they fix roads up properly, signage, road surface etc rather than just give outy tickets
ACC and Insurance companies could do that too
However some of the road speeds (some are stupid) and signs hidden behind trees etc - what idiots look after these?
about time the Ranguriri/Cooks Landing and South Of Ngaruawhia roads are fixed.
