Thinking of building a reverse trike... Am I out of my mind?
Can anyone enlighten me about the legalities of building and registering one? Thanks

The Can-am Spyders are registered as a car rather than a motorbike in NZ even though weight wise they could be registered as a bike. On the registration they are called "A factory built custom trike" or something like that. Even though they are registered as cars they have special dispensation where you don't have to have a seatbelt which would make no sense with their sitting position. They also don't need a front number plate.
The picture you've posted is more like the Polaris Slingshot which is more of a three wheel car anyway - I suspect for that you would need seatbelts for this and a front number plate.
Other 'car' rules also apply, so you have to have a full car sized number plate, there must be red reflectors mounted on the outermost sides of the rear of the vehicle, etc.
The big problem with reverse trikes is keeping the inside front wheel on the ground in corners and not flipping over. The Can-am Spyder has all sorts of electronics to prevent this, affectionately called 'nanny' by the owners - speaking from experience it's still possible to lift the wheels:-). I suspect the Polaris Slingshots have something similar. There's a couple of companies in the US that have tried doing conversion kits for Goldwings etc to turn them into reverse trikes but apparently this has been the big issue with them.

Man I had typed a reply, don't know where it went.
'Interesting' factor is lower, but honestly just build up a Lotus Seven style jobbie instead of something like this IMO.
There is a cool one floating about based on a mini and styled like a plane, but it is not a 'drivers' design (as touched on above), so it basically comes down to if you want something that looks cool but is a bit of a pig, or something that is a little more common but you can hammer and enjoy ;)

This would be/was the other option, built in the 1970's I did see one on the road, and it was 'shifting' with a 'cooper' lump in front.

Love it! I've seen a new one locally. It's on my Lotto list - which could be a problem cause I don't buy tickets.

The Morgan's my Lotto list as well - I want a matt green one with NZRAF roundels on the side...perhaps a couple of Vickers mounted on the bonnet wouldn't go a miss either:-)

Don't see many kit cars in NZ compared to the UK. Was looking at the Grinnall Scorpion a few years back, and a couple of four wheel open body versions, like this one. (http://www.kougar-cars.com/display-sports.php?popup=false&entry=1)
Is it hard to get them on the road legally here or something?

Nah I'd prefer one with an engine. The one I saw locally was red, but I'd prefer BRG with tan upholstery.
The basic price is high enough but there is a fairly lengthy list of options which can send the price soaring. Maybe I should consider a Lotto ticket when I go to the shops today?

The Greenwood mini. Controversially raced as a sidecar back in the day.

I just think that the wee red one might be within our price bracket...
Agree that green is a better colour, though do like this (https://www.flickr.com/photos/markk55/22640495908/) colour scheme...

I think you will find they still run mixed classes with similar vehicles today in their classic racing

Ah yes, well looking at it like that.
A year or four back I was coming north through the Buller Gorge as there was a considerable number of Morgans heading south. The NZ club was having an outing. With Morgans having a wooden chassis I guess you don't see them in Australia very often as Australia has termites.
A guy I know has a Morgan, he ordered it new from the factory, had to wait three years. He offered it to a firiend while he was out of the country for a while.
The friend enquired, "If I damage the car do I take it to a panel beater or a cabinet maker?"
