Android GPS Tracker

Hey guys

So I'm planning a tour of the south island next January, what i would love to do is have an app installed on my phone which can track the entire journey via GPS. So far I have found bugger all on the app store apart from an app which requires mobile data to record the GPS locations - which is useless to me as i will be out of mobile range/service range for a lot of the trip.

Does anybody know of an app that can use a preloaded map on an android device to accurately map an entire trip?

I use OruxMaps with a copy of the NZ Open Maps: http://www.nzopengps.org/public/Direct_gmapsupp/

Dump the img file in the Orux maps folder and you can turn on tracking, use Mapsource with gpx track files etc etc.

Probably uses your battery a little, but I only use it for tracking mountain biking trails for NZ Open Maps so it's not like I'm running it all day.

I use a APRS (auto position relay system) app on my phone APRSdroid to transmit the data to the web www.aprs.fr where everybody can see it.

I can also transmit the aprs data over digi repeaters to the same web address.

Failing that carry a GPS and download the data to google maps.

I use CoPilot which has offline maps, and uses your phone's GPS. No data usage, but GPS will use more battery than normal.

It automatically keeps a record of your trips (when GPS is enabled) which you can review later.

I've been playing with OSM tracker, free app that seems to work pretty well, uses GPS but no data so works anywhere, and can output files to other maps. Configurable for time between tracking points etc.

There's an avrider app too (avriderWD) that is half decent. I've used it a bit but when I went to load some stuff onto remotemoto there were massive gaps. For just me using it I was happy though.

fwiw, ridewithgps does require data, but you can go online and add the bits you missed later

I used ANPR for a while, but I found that all it did was take photos and compare them to a National Database.

I've stopped using it.

This app from Google might work for you too, Google My Tracks. I have used it to record my tracks while out cycling and walking and works a treat, including offline. Although like the other apps, it increases battery consumption somewhat.

It can be set to automagically save the recorded track to Google Drive if you use that and files are saved as .KML or .KMZ which means they will open up in Google Earth / Google Maps / Google My Maps.
