When I was at intermediate school, I won tickets to the first screening of 'Star Wars'. I had to dial (ask your mum) up the radio station and be caller number X.
The theater had put in a surround sound system (new in NZ) just for the movie.
Shit it was impressive.
All movies since have not lived up to the original experience way back in 19 something something........
I'll see this one. But the tech is now expected and common place (last new thing was 3D that has not taken off) so expectations are very high for visuals. So unless the story line is exceptional it will only be average.
Talking of story lines the original was pretty lame in retrospect - nothing new, bit of a fairy tale really. HOWEVER the visual impact of the imagery was very fresh and the 'ride' exciting.
I struggle to get a similar buzz from movies now days.

You won't have been punk in Auckland in 1977 I wouldnt have thought. Well... maybe. You would have been one of a few. When did Zwines open and close? the definitive record of the era is of course AK79 but by then mostly the scene had changed. New wave (so called) was later. terrible haircuts and godawful drum sound from those octagonal fake drums.
I did see original Star Wars at the theatre. I liked it but since I was then (and still am) a massive Star Trek fan I was underwhelmed. I have seen every Star Trek movie except NEMESIS in its theatrical release. TL;DR: Star Trek > Star Wars.

I've fond memories of my first Stars wars experience. With a few mates we bunked off High School. Smoked some dope in a phone booth in Cathedral Square, thinking we were hidden from public eyes. What teenage idiots we were. Stepped out of the booth to realise, truly to our shock, that everyone could see us through the glass and the booth was full of smoke, half of it pouring out of the booth.
So from there we went to the movie everyone was talking about that we had paid little attention to. Something about a sci-fi fantasy other world cowboys and Indians thing- yeah right, sounded like a load of bollocks. UNTIL. Stoned as any stoned idiots could be we were blown away by the opening credits. Those words coming out of the bottom of the screen disappearing ever smaller into the endless universe. Wow! That alone blew our minds. Didn't really care what the movie was like after that awesome experience. The movie was just a bonus after those amazing opening credits.
That was with my best friend through high school and our twenties. He died of a brain tumour in 2001. 14 years already? Hard to believe.
I'll think of him when I go to watch this latest instalment.

It's augmented reality. Spaceships do have internal speakers and advanced computers / sensor suites, and humans have evolved to rely on our hearing as part of situational awareness. So really, it would make less sense to leave everything silent.

No. It does not.
It is appalling, cynical, and stupid. It is a gross exploitation of treasured childhood memories. It needs to be burned. WITH FIRE.
I cannot tell you how much I hated this film. Actually, my hatred extends not only to the film (which is BAD) but to everyone associated with it. The people who used to be in it (I am looking at you Carrie Fisher and Harry Ford) are clearly ONLY DOING IT FOR THE MONEY. George Lucas doesnt give a fuck because he made FOUR BILLION DOLLARS when the "property" was sold to the fucking King Rat, Disney.
It is a fucking travesty.
Go to the Warehouse and buy the Bluray of SERENITY for like a tenner and actually get a fim worth seeing. Because this shit is evil and stupid. More relevantly, it is fucking IRRELEVANT. There is no point to any other star wars film other than the first one. Dumbass the first one is the one that was released in 1977 and which George the fucking corporate shill retconned into being "Episode IV". That is fucking Star Wars. There is, I'll admit, some justification for the first trilogy. There is no reason whatever for for the second trilogy. Who THE FUCK cares about Jar Jar and fuckingLiam Neeson and what the fuck is Natalie Portman DOING? and Ewan McGregor? Jesus, just get on a motorbike for fucks sake.
But wait, let me tell you what I really think:

because it is THE SAME FILM as the first one. Just cynically re-jigged so as to appear "new enough". But think about it. IT IS THE SAME STORY. IN THE SAME LOCATION. With the same cardboard cutout characters in the same stupid setups. Fuck, I cannot tell you how tedious that shit is.
I like Daisy Ridley. Mostly because her first name is Daisy, and she can deadlift 80kg. Look that shit up she really can. And John Boyega is great as the TR-8R. Actually thats not fair he is the everyman hero. And he is competent.
But Kylo Ren? a low rent conflicted Darth Vader? Who the fuck cares? the point of a villain is THAT HE IS THE VILLAIN. We dont care about his internal trauma. Just force choke some bitch for fucks sake.
Oh yeah, and the mega weapon? Its the same motherfucker as they had in '77! Christ on a crutch, really?

Well, kinda. You do mean "Green screen" not blue though, right?
The major shift from "auteur" cinema to "blockbuster movies" occurred with JAWS which was released prior to STAR WARS. The decade before JAWS is actually my favourite in American film. It was the era of the "director as auteur" and resulted in some brilliant films: EASY RIDER THE GODFATHER, DOG DAY AFTERNOON, etc. I personally dont like EASY RIDER, but its cinematography, and the thought of purple dye trickling down Peter Fonda's ballbag, save it for me.
In fact, if you want to watch a great documentary about it I would recommend "Easy Riders and Raging Bulls"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0359203/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2
and "A decade under the influence"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0342275/?ref_=tt_rec_tti
as an examination of the era.
In fact, it is completely arguable that the phenomenon of the "blockbuster" is entirely responsible for the dire state of the industry today. Because as a result of the massive success of the blockbusters, other corporates, not film studios were attracted to the industry, bought up the old school studios, and then ruined the industry by chasing the tentpole movies. There's a really good book by Lynda Obst about it:
http://www.bookdepository.com/Sleepless-Hollywood-Lynda-Obst/9781476727752
TL;DR: Star Wars fucked the movies for movie fans.

Or, ripping through it. because F = MA bitches. Or, as seems evident in your case Dyno-Dave, remedial reading at "normal" speed..
Star Wars is ludicrously dumbed-down, to the point of incoherence - as evidently suits those who aspire to "normal" levels of "comprehension".
( & of course, the X-fighter canyon attack on the D-star shown in the original movie - was a fairly blatant crib from 'The Dambusters'..
AllanB

The original movie stands up in memory because the imagery was ground breaking for the time.
The story is nothing new, totally unoriginal (it's a fucking princess, bad boy rescue fairy tale for Christs sake - The Force is no more that old time 'magic' from a thousand previous stories). The story line is a rip off of a rip off.
As I started - the detail, sound and visual delights of the original, in it's day were impressive and burnt itself into my youthful (and corresponding ageing) mind. But the ha-do surrounding the waffle that came in the 'later' movies is unjustified - from a current time young persons point of view there was nothing stunning or ground breaking in a similar manner to the original to justify their box office income. Indeed I'd go as far as to say until the current release the income and hype has been based on expectations of what the latest movie is - a revisit of the original with original characters - the hype being mainly derived by old farts like me who were wowed as a teen by movie one, introduced their kids to it and made them suffer through five or so average efforts.
I will also appoligise for what appears to be a coherent, well thought out statement above - I will revert back to my usual KB waffle on future posts.

Those who went to this film expecting to see an intelligent, ground-breaking piece of cinema: its Star Wars, ok? Lighten up.
Personally I didn't mind seeing what was more or less a reworked version of the original, it was like a cleansing of the palette after the dross (sorry Liam, Ewan and Natalie, you did your best) that was the prequels. I think it sets the stage for the films to come.
I know the effects were probably what carried the original back in '77, but I think people underestimate how big a part the characters (and especially the humour between them) played in it's success, and that was what carried the trilogy successfully (despite the Ewoks) through to Return of the Jedi.
In fact I'd say Firefly (and the Serenity movie, which was horribly condensed but better than nothing) is a direct descendant of the original trilogy in this regard, only taken to a vastly higher level.
And 2001 rocks! Still love that movie, sure some acts are a bit tedious, but the HAL one is nothing short of brilliant; and the ending still gives me chills.
Plus I had vouchers, so it was free for me :niceone:.

I enjoyed it.
I will be seeing the next one when it comes out.
However - there are things that I'm a touch disappointed about.
As everyone else had said - It's a New Hope re-hashed - I wish they had done more with it.
Ray is a bit of a Mary Sue learning Advanced Force techniques with no training, Mastering a LightSabre to beat a Sith with no training. I could somewhat look past Fin's ability to master the LightSabre on account that he was a StormTrooper and there is a slight possibility of them doing close combat/sword like training - even though that is also unlikely - however Fin brings me to the next point.
Fin - now before people start throwing the Race Card - I think the guy that played him did Awesome, and I am excited to see him in the next 2 movies - however having someone who is Black in the First Order/Empire misses an entire point that was made in the first films - everyone in the Empire was white males, and of European descent, with Clean black Uniforms - They were Space Nazis! This was to highlight just how Totalitarian, Xenophobic, Uncompromising and Evil the Empire was, Especially when compared to the Rebellion which was all inclusive. Having a Black StormTrooper kinda defeats this imagery.
Then there is a StormTrooper breaking their conditioning - while interesting, it undermines the terror of the StormTrooper - that they are effectively mindless automata - following orders no matter how evil they are. To have a StormTrooper break this conditioning makes them less scary.
And Han died :( Many a Manly Tear was Shed.

the X-fighter canyon attack on the D-star shown in the original movie - was a fairly blatant crib from 'The Dambusters'..
isnt the P Jackson version Dambusters coming out soon?
The original SW movie was enough tech, bangs, bright lights, fast moving plot to keep most people attentive. Didn't matter that the plot was thin etc, people wanted an escape into a different world/time when they goto the movies.

I enjoyed it and want to see it again. I knew Han Solo was going to croak and believe Harrison Ford only agreed to do it if his character was killed off. In the books he dies saving Luke and Chewie, I believe, in Return of the Jedi so he aleady was on borrowed time.
I always liked R2D2 but adore BB8!! I soooooo want one of those!
Sure it was basically a rehash of IV, and how in the hell did Leia and Han produce Mr Perfect Wavy Locks (when in reality it should have been dreaded helmet hair), BUT it does build the expectation and anticipation of what is to come. I think they'll be considerably more satisfying than the dreadful I, II and III (oh III was ok). (And I still suspect the evil Emporer might have somehow survived in Return of the Jedi...)

Eeeek, I must stop speed reading (above is what I saw in your post until I went back for a second look) :pinch::o
hahaha, Endor, the Thailand-esque plastic surgery holiday mecca of the galaxy?
George sold Lucasfilm (the owner of STAR WARS) to Disney for FOUR BILLION AMERICAN DOLLARS in cash and stock.
So Disney needs to get its money back therefore Star Wars ad nauseam. They will not see $1 more of my money though.
One of the first things they did was cancel The Clone Wars too, bastards. I'll still watch em though as there isn't enough other sci-fi out there to otherwise be entertained with.

Dunno, wasn't there some post-modernist production drama to do with the only 'Nigger' character being killed off, 1/2 way in?
Maybe - if Sir P.J. got Samuel L. Jackson to do an "authentic" voice-over, like James E. Jones did for the original Darth Vader?

If memory serves - Nigger is the Labrador of the Wing Commander and was the name of the real life dog, killed by a Car accident I think.

Not in ages - but good to know my memory is good.
I've accused Cassina of many things - however Racist isn't one.
On a side note - they better not change the name of the Dog.

Yeah, it may be a P.C issue..
& oddly enough, I took over the care of an all-white cat named 'Nigrito' which was a a bit of Aussie/Latino
humour which translates as 'Blackie'..
P.S. - AFAIR, Patty was referencing John Lennon's Plastic Ono 'Women are the niggers of the world' song there..

Yeah, it may be a P.C issue..
I fear it maybe, but it shouldn't - it is simply a historical fact (and some would say is an integral part of the event as Nigger represents the units Esprit de'corps), if we start changing the historical names of things because it offends us - where do we stop?

People use it all over the place now, it doesn't have the same connotations like it used to be.

Go and get it, download it, rip it or whatever the term is but watch the original before the Peter Jackson version comes out with a different theme tune and a dog called Spot.
