Howdy people, been lurking a while but finally have me a bike! very exciting.
...Was wondering if you good folks could recommend me an insurance crowd for 3rd party/fire/theft cover. I'm 22/male on a learner license and an geriatric 250cc bike.
I had one company recommended to me, but it turns out I need to be 25 and a member of some club?! :angry2:
cheers for any suggestions :)

I'm with AMI and while I havn't made a claim yet, they have been fine so far. I know I had trouble when I was originally looking for an insurer, I found most companies will not insure a bike.

Hey Yessum,
Cool handle bro, "yessum massa".
Anyways, try John Baker Insurance Brokers toll free:- 0800 65 62 64
I've been told a lot of bike club riders insure with him. See what premiums are like with him.

Contact Dave at Kiwi Rider Insurance (www.kiwirider.co.nz). Outstanding service. The insurance on my Zrex thought Dave (Swann Insurance policy) was half -- that's right, half -- the price AMI quoted.

I've got both my bikes with State, it's about $300 for each, they're both 250s and I'm on my learners. They're insured for $5500 each.
Remember to list your gear as well so that if you come off you can get the bike fixed and the gear replaced.

I got my insurance for 3rd party/fire & theft through Protecta Insurance, cost me $122- for the year. They're based in Auckland and have a website www.protecta.co.nz or 09-377 6872. I'm over 25 so I'm not sure if they have a different policy for under 25's. They specialise in Motorbike inurance. :niceone:

AMI are very good with claims. I made a claim when some jerk reversed into my '99 R6 knocking it over. They fixed my bike and sued the jerk because he didn't have any insurance.

I am insured by M E Joblin (broker) - Classic Cover as advertised in many mag's. They are underwritten by Royal and Sunalliance (or whatever thay are called now) and one policy covers both bikes - coz you can only ride one at a time. My bikes live in separate garages, so loss by fire of both is unlikely.
This policy can also be paid for monthly at no extra cost.
And on the subject of cost, this cover (for two bikes) is cheaper than State wanted for one bike.
Only drawback - you have to be over 30 years old.

Most insurance companies will only insure you on a motorbike if you have other insurance policies with them

YOW! :thud:
40% of motorcycle incidents may well be "single vehicle" but I bet that a significant chunk of those are due to other factors. Which leaves the other 60% as having a fault implication for the other vehicle involved. How come car insurance doesn't go up to cover stupidity!?
I'm quite lucky with my insurance, because we have everything with one company and we get a significant discount as a result. My bike isn't worth as much as yours, but I'm only paying $279 a year for full cover with Tower. I think all up for 2 cars and a bike I pay around the same as you.

With my old VT250 i had insurance with AMI and that was $25 a year for third party. Pretty cheap if you ask me.
Now with my CBR250RR it is $376 a year for full cover and a value of $5000.

Biggest issues insurers have with bikes
1. The fact when involved in an accident - it usually is expensive
2. The are EASY to steal

I've ended up going with State, who will charge me a pretty reasonable $60/pa for 3rd party.
sorted! and thanks for the suggestions.
Finally got my learners this morning, and had my first real ride - about 45kms around Auckland. Was suprised at the amount of buffet (and wind noise) at motorway speeds!! got no fairing on the bike, see.
wicked fun though :ride: :Punk:

I've recently insured my bikes through Eric Wood motorcycles in Christchurch.
I managed to get both bikes insured for cheaper than one that I had insured through John Bakers, although I have to say I can't complain about the service at John Bakers.
Just for the record, you don't have to be local to deal with Eric Wood M/C's.
Just give em a call and ask for Brett.

Good on you mate! It feels good, eh? Screens don't cost a lot for the comfort they provide. Givi make a range that should include one for your bike.

I got a good deal thru National Auto Club - $ 707 fully comprehensive with value of $13,000 for me & hubby. Had proof of full no claim discount from UK which was actually worth the paper it was written on! Haven't made a claim yet............................
Now that I come to think of it, I should reduce the value of the bike as the small print says they will only pay market value, oh well..............
