View Full Version : What boots?

I have a pair of Fly Mavericks which are starting to wear. They were $80 on sale 4 ish years ago. The sole is starting to come apart so it will cost as much as the boots to get them repaired.

And I get sore feet with them standing. Think the sole flexes to much.

I see Cycletreads have a sale on Oneal Elements, are they any good? Or what else would be better for trail riding?

Next gen boots have kinda solid insteps to cushion that area. Just bought some alpinestars on special, pretty clunky to get used to but happy now. Take thick socks to try them on. Expect to spend money, your feet will thank you.

On my kdx I cut an old foot peg up an welded 1/2 to the narrow std pegs to give a wider platform (3rung) to spread the load. Much betterer.

I bought a pair of Stylmartin trials boots to replace my clunky and rigid motox boots. $200 from Techmoto IIRC. They are not flash goretex but the leather is well oiled and supple, all day comfortable on and off the bike. Thus far I am exceedingly happy. Stiff sole but also good feel through the pegs and enough flex to be delicate with the rear brake.

I have SIDI Crossfire2 SRS. I found sizing is one size out, all my footwear are 47, but needed 48 in SIDI, They are heavy with amazing protection and absolutely no feeling when changing gear and even worse on the rear brake. One day I'll get the enduro sole for them, but ok at present. I don't like them but got talked into buying them ( best protection bla bla bla) I feel very safe wearing them though. And bloody awful to walk in, even though the ankle is hinged. Extremely well made and will last forever unfortunately.

I got sidi chargers and love em. My boot history is short, with only Beriks before them but the hinges make walking so much easier. I can happily spend all day in them without complaint. No sore arches. No sore shins. I've pined my leg under the bike once or twice offroad and took them down some gravel at a reasonable clip, not so much as a bruise on me (other than ego).
Like above they don't have much 'feel', but it's never bothered me (I wouldn't be as good a rider as flash though so maybe I'm not doing things on the bike that make that sort of thing matter)

I don't think you could go wrong with alpine stars either but I have never worn them.

For anything else, I recommend finding what you like the look of price wise locally and seeing what people have said about them on mx forums/adventure rider etc.

Thanks for the vote Tazz, I would say I'm a very average rider on a good day, I just have some neat toy's which helps.
I have finally decided to buy some "Mobius" knee braces, to be safe and protect the new knee. So it'll be hinged ankles and knees, (like Robo cop) it'll look real strange when I walk
that's for sure.

Luck keeps me upright most the time haha. I just know you go on a decent amount of trail rides which has to be great for the skill set.

If you don't get a robocop styled helmet as well you will have a lot of people who are not angry at you.....just very disappointed

That's the best thing you could do for yourself. Protect those knees. They can be a dirt riders Achilles Heal (pun intended). I have no Anterior Cruciate Ligament in my right knee (broke it when I was a teenager) and have worn Knee Braces since about 1984, one to support my crook knee and the other in case I damage my good one. I've advised heaps of budding dirt riders to get them BEFORE the damage is done...some listen, some don't...and with luck those that didn't will never need them, but I wouldn't bet on it. I can't even kick-start my classic bikes with my right leg these days....if they ever kick back the pain is excruciating. The gear that's available these days is unreal. ATGATT (especially in the dirt) is my advice FWIW. Good luck.

I had a pair of Vendramini Plastic boots way back in the 80's and they were awesome, the ultimate in protection. Other riders who had them complained of lack of feel for the gear and brake levers but once your bike was set up for them it was all good. I used to say to those that said they gave no feel that I didn't really want to feel stumps and logs and rocks.

Yeah knee braces have been on my mind, scared to look at the price. But I like being able to walk.

Tried some Alpinestar Tech 7 enduros today. Think thats what I will get.

Think mine were the old 5s, can't remember. Had sidis before which were great but were always 1/2 a size too small. Been 10 years or so so treated myself to a new pair. Sidis now out of my price range.

I think I paid about $200 each for the old McDavid knee braces in the 80's and back then that was a hell of a lot of hard earned. The braces available today are miles better and effectively cheap as chips . Don't look Ethel...just buy them, they're the best investment you'll make.:niceone:

Mobius knee braces $899.00 OUCH, checked others + online reviews. All the good ones are a similar price. Some are rather wide and will wear a hole in your pants leg from rubbing on the bike. Mobius appears to be slimmest that I could find, Be nice if you could try them for a day (test drive)before buying.
I also looked at alpinestars tech 7 boots and nearly bought some. I liked them.

Been using these for the last few years not a top notch knee brace but damn good compared to Normal knee pads. And not anywhere near 6-800 a set?
They give good support. Yes I have holes in my pants from gripping and turning the bike with my kness, its unavoidable I reckon

I bought some Forma Dominator on special from either BTO sports or Torpedo7 (I think the later) wanted good ankle support because I kept catching stumps out the Sandpit and fucking my ankle :(
Damn good boots for support and their upmark buckle system if you can find some??

Edit
Looks like it was T7 sold out now mine are black but damn good boots ( heaps of great reviews) for the price http://www.torpedo7.co.nz/products/QFBWXN2DT/title/forma-dominator-tx-boots

All good as long as you realize those are only knee guards, although better protection than knee pads, they won't offer the levels of protection from twisting forces and/or hyperextension that a proper knee brace will. Check torpedo 7, there are other proper knee braces a lot cheaper than Mobius.
Now about those boots, Those Sold out "Forma" boots on torpedo 7 with the hinged ankle's looked the Biz, good price too.

Sadly they are only XL or I would have grabbed some. Remembered I am using hinged knee pads at the moment.

So will keep an eye out for the right size and price to come up.

They are good tough(heavy) boots and wear well but they leak like a sieve, my feet get soaked walking on damp grass. The pivot bolts need loctite to.
Personally I like a stitched sole over the alpine stars type sole( my tech 3 soles fell apart within 6 months).

Now that's interesting, the only time my feet get wet in my Sidi's, is when playing in rivers and creeks mostly.

Thanks for the tip about the loctite I'll do mine :) Havent had a problem with the wet tho.
Stitched sole yes agree, my last boots where molded sole and I whore them out where the kick start is and the brake. The stitched sole has a sharp edge rather than rounded so your either on or off. not scraping down the side.
Pretty shore I use the tip of the lip 10% of the time to change up to :)

Quite happy to lend you a pair off the knee guards if you wanna see how they go ( I have two sets).
I usually do the top up over my padded riding under shorts and the bottom over my socks so there is a barrier between them and my skin. I know you can buy lycra under layer shit for this but what I do works for me, so you might need something under?.

Tech 7s have a replaceable sole or you can just replace the instep.

I may just get a buckle if I can for my Flys then give them to the cobbler to re-sole.

Thanks Mate. I have pivoting knee guards so will look into braces. Will ask Richard at MotoOne for what he can get.

Because of the huge expense ACC went to replacing my knee, and I also enjoy walking. I decided to buy what I think are the best for "Me" knee braces "Mobius" Still quite bulky though and will take some getting used to. These came with extra padding so you can personalize the fit for each knee.
Apology's for the thread highjack NZSpokes but these do fit into the top of the "boots" hope this helps.

Well done that man. They are very good braces from what I've been told.
I found putting braces on not the fastest thing to do, but I'm determined to wear them every time I ride, no matter how short the ride.

They just popped up in my size for $300 the pair. To good to pass up. Guy wore them 5 times then gave up riding. No damage at all on them so very happy.

And far more comfortable than any knee pads I have worn.

Next will be boots when the $$$$ build up.

Not worn out by any means, broken buckle which I have ordered a replacement and they are getting quite cut up where the pegs sit on the sole.

But I need to really try to stand on the balls of my feet instead of the instep so will have a new area of the sole to wear out.

They will go for a good few rides yet. I dont want to cheap out on the next pair so will save and get decent ones.

Put it this way, I dont feel unsafe in them at all.

Sounds good. Now you're all set for that ride you were asking about, you'll be safe at least. Go have fun. If you get real stuck there are heaps of helpful riders on every ride. Just cruise at your own pace. KDX 200 great bike.
