View Full Version : RIP David Bowie

A posting on the official David Bowie website said the rock star died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a "courageous 18 month battle with cancer".
Sky News and The Hollywood Reporter said Bowie's representatives confirmed the death.
A short time ago, his son, director Duncan Jones also confirmed the news in a tweet.

Damn sad.
Got the news when my phone started beeping awhile ago. Heading off to the stereo now to celebrate the sounds of a generation and ponder the fickleness of life. He seemed ageless.

Came here to post this. A number of my heroes have died recently. Lou Reed, Lemmy, now Bowie. I have been a fan since I was 13. Christ, first album I loved was Aladdin Sane.
Cranking up the saddest song in the world, from one of the saddest albums.
By the way, I also made the trek to the record store last week (Friday 8th) to buy the new album "BLACK STAR"
Totally worthwhile. Not a rock and roll record. Produced by Visconti.
I may have to take a week off of work.

Dies @ 69.. & was Mick Jagger there - when he popped his cork?
Will Davy Jones ( Bowie's actual name, funnily enough) get a burial at sea?
Or will he re-invent himself & go on tour with Rob Zombie?

Bugger. I suddenly feel really old.
When your superstar idols of your youth start dying, you realise the years are catching up on you.
I've said it many times. Being a teenager through the 1970s was a genius move on our part. To experience the best decade EVER as a teen - totally awesome dude. David Bowie was the pinnacle of the music I loved. So many songs, how do you pick a favourite.
I saw him live at QEII Park in Chch sometime in the second half of the 70s. Hard to recall the year? I was stoned for 10 years. He ended with a serious lecture against the rising National Front movement. That took most of us young Kiwis by surprise and mystified many. We were all so far removed from what was happening overseas, and really David, few teenagers ever follow the news.
Farewell and thanks for all the fantastic music you gifted us, now fond memories.

Death of a rocker is quite often a good career move. His new album will do very well.
Good luck getting a signed copy though.
Not a huge fan but I do have a few of his songs on my playlist. "Absolute Beginners' probably my fave.

Another incredible moment I wont forget. Saw him at Westpac Stadium, maybe late 90s. It was torrential rain. A waterfall was pouring off the front roof of the stage onto the walkway he had out into the crowd.
It was a bloody cold night as well. Bowie and band were sheltering under the stage roof as best they could. Then Bowie says, if you crazy fools (or something funny like that) are prepared to stand in mud and rain to listen to me then I'm joining you. He walked through the waterfall, in light clothing and remained out in the rain for the rest of the concert. Probably caught a cold but wow, we were all so impressed- he truly loved his fans.

A sad day for music.
I can still remember the first Bowie song I ever heard, listening to Starman on my Dick Smith radio one night. Since then I've acquired pretty much every album he's done on one medium or another, and managed to infect the kids as well, went looking for the Bowie vinyl to play last night and found The man who sold the world in one sons room and Ziggy Stardust in the other's.
May he rest in peace.

Back in the seventies I worked with a guy that organised gigs for up and coming artists....
I told him how much I loved Bowie and that I had recently seen him in concert. Bowie had done about ten costume changes, danced under blue stroboscopic lights, sang songs of the future, songs of hope, songs of alien worlds and mystic people. The performance was incredible and at one point Bowie had pointed at me in the crowd, me!
It took several days for my ears to stop ringing but, it was worth every second. On that day, this awestruck teenager believed he had seen something otherworldly. Dare I say it, the man was like almost god-like to my eyes.
My colleague said that Bowie wasn't really his bag but told me of the time he had booked Bowie and his band to play some no account venue in Wolverhampton (think Hamilton).
He received a panicked call from the band stating they had broken down on the Motorway and weren't going to make the gig.
According to my workmate, Bowie turned up with minutes to go and was told that his band wasn't going to arrive. Still worse, all the amps, guitars, drums etc, were parked up on a motorway a 60 miles away and the gig would have to be cancelled.
Within minutes, Bowie had bagged an acoustic guitar and a bar stool, which he dragged on stage himself. He adjusted his mike, sat on the stool , tuned the Guitar and played and sang alone for an hour and a half.
This is anecdotal of course but I have no reason to doubt the story nor the integrity and talent of the man himself.
David Bowie, Legend. RIP and thanks Kid, you were something special.

Oh the humanity..
Hysterical, HDC - what is it with "ignore list" announcements?
Totally pointless, except as a supercilious remark.. since you'd already know, & no one else - gives a shit..
&, the same goes - for the angry tirade of misdirected personal abuse, in response to an accurate, if vulgar, description..
While on the hilarity, I note that Jerry Hall, prior squeeze of Mick Jagger ( one of Bowie's bi-bed mates )
has hooked up with Rupert Murdoch.. its good to see some oldies are still having a bit of fun..

By the look of the out-of-it prick, I doubt he'd "passed" on any heavy shit, even ( maybe particularly) if he was on his death bed..
Not that there's anything wrong with that.. 'cept for Hep C/liver cancer or whatnot, gained by by sharing kit with filthy junkies..
