Those Mini Mokes go for big bucks now - collectible!

I remember those Fiats coming out decades back - in the day they were sooooo weird. Oddly the concept and execution is not so alien in 2016.

I quite like the Cube - seen them decked out with fat feet, and as promo vehicles. The rest of my family think I am mad.

I offer the following Toyota for consideration of WTF design ... the arse does not work with the front and adding those piddly wheels .....

At least Ford are letting the Falcon name die theres talk of sticking a Commodore badge on the Buick. The new Mustang will be Fords saving grace with the 1st thousand already landed and presold in Australia...waiting list is one year, not my cup of tea but certainly an incredible motor though theres a fair few of the turbo 4 cyl ones being ordered, parked behind one awhile back and took a pic the things are bloody huge and seemed to almost dwarf the GTP,not the latest Mustang but same size.

Haha - it will go forever and not let her down though!

Today I purchased my 17 yr old daughter a car ..... Toyota Vitz 5 door that has a body kit and fat feet! The 1.3 l engine does not live up to the body kit though ;) Comes with a spare front bumper (standard one) - once I get the vehicle I may swap it over, or just wait for her to rip off the snow scraper of a sport one that is on it now!

Same engine and platform as the Platz - just prettier (cuter?). Surprising what a decent set of wheels can do to jazz up a plain jane vehicle.

You gotta wonder how a design like that ever got signed off. Someone must have swallowed.

And tied their hands to their ankles..... it is still ugly now! Must be a future we have not lived yet!

Presumably they run their designs past multiple focus groups representing the most potential purchaser?

Add to the WTF were they thinking on some vehicle paint colours too. There are some truly insipid colours that do nothing to a design out there. Toyota are very bad for this!

I wonder if they name them relative to the vileness of the colour?

Limp-piss yellow,
Menstruating mauve,
Old-ladies-hair blue ......

I did a longish road trip a few years back in a Multipla. It belonged to a guy's dad and he had borrowed it for the weekend. We had four people plus camping gear (for huts - no tents) plus mountain bikes and it swallowed it all admirably. It was quiet, cruised all day at 110 and cheap to run. Not sure about long term viability (didnt they rust? or break down?) but it impressed me on that trip way more than the old L300 4 x 4 we did other trips in. Or the fucking 2WD shitbox courier van thing we used to go kayaking in with five boats on top and a fucking maniac driving.

Fiat multipla.

Indeed. Not too many will be familiar with those but the place I worked at had one. Nobody wanted to drive it, nobody wanted to be seen in it. It was reliable when new but as it aged it developed some irritating faults. A group of people had to travel from Hastings to New Plymouth with the ice warning going beep beep beep the whole way. On a warm day.

Of course the auto electrician at the local European vehicle specialist didn't have a clue. Except that he insisted I couldn't just cut the bloody wire.

They actually had pretty decent Lockheed 4 piston callipers, The calipers used to be quite sort after for putting on Rally Escorts.

Have to agree about the Maxi, not really a mans car though.

The AU Falcon was the ugliest of the breed and it dented sales big time for Ford, but it's surprising how many of them are still on the road.

Two of the guys I work with drive AU's and swear by them. My neighbour has an AU Fairmont which he probably polishes once a week, it's mint. Eye of the beholder and all that I guess ...

Now the plain version was indeed fugly. Boring nose, wheels too small, sat too high on those wee wheels....
The XR version with the Tickford engine, suspension, lowering and other goodness plus the entire nose and body kit transformed it and sold well.

I have the XR6 in Vemon Red, larger wheels, tinted windows - looks ace - I get a lot of positive comments. Goes bloody well, surprising good on fuel for a big donk and simple to work on.

Matchy matchy colour with my Ducati too! Picture the day after getting the bike.

Velorex was a manufacturing cooperative in Solnice, Czechoslovakia. Notable products included a small three-wheeled car, produced from the 1950s until 1971, and the Type 562 sidecar. The sidecar is still manufactured in the Czech Republic by Velorexport, the successor to Velorex.

pretty sure the Ford Taurus was the vehicle I used to get around when in the USA. Back in the day.
So Fugly, I considered it an asset, not one would have been bothered to steal it.

From what I recall it was actually very comfortable, with plenty of power and quite frugal on the gas when doing long mileage, both up hill (they have a few mountains) and down and in the desert.
It had a reasonable powerful engine and an excited cruise control.:Punk:
It had a large boot space to keep the hookers:shutup: and other gear.

It was easy to spot as almost no one would park next to it.

Tatra cars obviously had the same stylist as Tatra Trucks I can't find the model we had over here.
But they are rugged as they had a real interesting backbone chassis plus a kind of independent swinging tilting axel rear suspension they were 6X6 with an air cooled engine as well. Ugly but highly effective

I think the maxis only saving grace was it had a decent engine size and a 5 speed. I can't actually remember the last time I seen one.
I read in a book they were actually meant to be a hatchback but something went wrong they couldn't stop it leaking or something and changed it at the last minute.

They were a hatchback... I had one. You may be getting confused with the Allegro. I had one of those too, and it wasn't a hatchback.

Agreed the AU falcon was an interesting style choice, and probably a bit much for your average conservative australian, but still better than opting for no styling at all and going for the blob on wheels approach.....
319107

And then you have the tried to join in the fun but missed the mark by a long way...
319108

And as for the weird eastern european stuff, as long as you keep looking you'll find something uglier than what you thought was the ugliest car you've ever seen, it's a perfect demonstration of what happens when things such as designing something are taken over by a committee.....

I believe the second part of his post was in regards to the Leyland Princess, which had a boot when first released. My understanding/reading suggest that BL management didn't give it a hatchback as they were worried that it would take sales away from the Maxi (which indeed had a hatchback).

The Princess then became the Austin Ambassador in '82 I think, when it got a hatchback (and some minor styling updates).

...The AU Falcon was the ugliest of the breed and it dented sales big time for Ford, but it's surprising how many of them are still on the road.

Two of the guys I work with drive AU's and swear by them. My neighbour has an AU Fairmont which he probably polishes once a week, it's mint. Eye of the beholder and all that I guess ...

Ford Oz made the mistake of following Ford Europe's styling cues of the time and adopted the "New Edge" shape for the AU - basically the panels lights etc had big sweeping curves intersecting at sharp corners. The Mondeo, Focus etc had the same treatment, but the worst of the New Edge bunch was the Ford Ka...

On the farm I was working ( Awarua farm settlement, landcorp) between Invercargill and Bluff. We had a "Toyota Scout" It died in the middle of lambing and the boss hired my Mactra on a super wet spring, water just lying on the paddocks. Gave the distributor a good dose of CRC 556 before going out and it'd go anywhere, boss bellied it on a stump out on the reclaimed swamp one day. And he said, with one wheel in the air he put it in reverse and drove the bloody thing straight off. He was impressed and so was I. The side doors under the deck, It was nice and warm in there from the engine, he put cold wet lambs in there, by the time he got back to the woolshed they were warm and dry and feeling and looking heaps better. The joys of farming in southland.

Has got paddle tyres on it which are great in a boggy paddock but pretty shithouse on SH1. It's cosy inside to say the least but hard to beat as a farm run around. When you look at the side by sides coming out now, they're evolving into the same thing. If Suzuki offered the late small van as a flatdeck with offroad tyres and 4wd they'd be onto a winner.

There was a crowd importing the late Suzuki 413 or whatever they were called, they were made in India or something and couldn't be registered as no airbags or ancap rating etc.
Ideally the suzuki is just awe bit to small and light in the chassis one based on a Nissan vanette or toyota(*can't recall what they were called) would be perfect.

No - too narrow at the rear. In the flesh they look more like a P11 tank. Could be, too, they probably over stocked on them...

The old partsbin special. Great way of using up surplus parts.
Dunstall used to make more money selling off all the factory norton parts on his new bike specials
Granted as its on a spine frame, but in profiles similar shape.
i guess the shape being similar in profiles is a resullt of styling on purpose.
I have no idea why they never styled bikes after the Manx.

I can imagine the conversation between Enzo and designer, (Bertone?)

Enzo: "I want you to design a new model for me,,, a bit different. This is for the American market."

Bertone, or whoever: Ok, I know exactly what you want. They're all idiots over there, so you'll want something as ugly as fuck!"

That is considerably nicer than that earlier version (AU?).
Holden apparently heard that fraud were releasing a "new" falcoon and immediately starting a facelift version of their current model. Upon seeing what the new P.o.S ford looked like, they laughed and put away the facelift model as "unnecessary!".

I think what he was meaning was after production had finished in England, the tooling for thr Morris Oxford and all the rest were moved tio India and the same happened in iran for the Hunter and production carried on.
The lada might have looked like a Fiat 125 but the running gear was not in the same league.
The Fiat 125 had an all alloy DOHC with a ZF 5 speed and 4 wheel discs.

I thought the Lada was based on the FIAT 124.

Quote from Wikipedia [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fiat_124]:
In 1966, Fiat entered into a collaborative agreement with the Soviet government to establish car manufacture in the Samara region of Russia. Fiat was contracted to take part in the creation of the massive VAZ plant in the newly created town of Togliatti, named after the Italian communist leader of the same name.[21] The factory produced an adapted version 124R of the 124, known as the VAZ-2101 "Zhiguli" (sold as the Lada 1200/1300 in export markets), until 1982, and 1200s until 1987. Based on the 124, they were modified at more than 800 points, the major modifications having an entirely different Fiat OHC engine, hydraulic clutch, drum brakes at the rear, modified suspensions, etc. Early modifications include the VAZ-2102 (station wagon), 2103 (Lada 1500), 2106 (Lada 1600) and 21011 (Lada 1300). The updated and restyled versions of the 124-based design were produced until September 2012, as the VAZ-2104, 2105 and 2107 – marketed as the Lada Riva (or Lada Classic) in most Western European markets.[citation needed] Production of this line reached 17,332,954 cars, this being the second largest production volume for a car in automotive history

The 124 was produced as a saloon, station wagon, coupé and spider. The original Lada was based on the FIAT 124 and this is acknowledged in the FIAT museum in Torino

The Ka was the ultimate Ford "New Edge" vehicle. Big opposing curves meeting at sharp corners. It included the usual suspects, Focus, Mondeo, and even the AU Falcon which has to be the ugliest Falcon shape ever. Like the current model scowly face cars, the New Edge cars were an acquired taste - one which I never acquired.
