View Full Version : So I got pinged speeding

Got caught, the officer checked everything.

I got breath tested and asked for my name, license was asked for and sighted, he checked WOF and rego tags too. He was professional and courteous, but I'm sure that he wouldn't have cut me any slack if he'd found something.

Posting this as a counterpoint to the recent thread about saving money on registration.

Wife's car got backed into two weeks ago. Guy admitted fault to my insurance co and everything is fine. A few hours later I took the car to the agreed panel beater for them to take pictures to supply with a cost estimate to the insurance company.

The first two pictures the guy took were of the cars WOF and License.

(Yes, I know various policies have various wordings on what's required of the vehicle, but still, made me think ...)

I know of cases in the UK where insurance companies have said the insurance is invalid on cars that don't have a valid licence and MOT (Brit equivalent of WOF) and have declined paying out as a result - regardless of whose fault it is. Someone I worked with 20 years ago had a £10,500 car written off with no payout because of wrong licence.

Sound like insurance companies try the same get out here.

The courts here have been pretty reasonable about this issue.

If the expired WoF can be proven to have led to the crash (due to something which prevented you getting a WoF, like a bald tyre, causing the crash), you're out of luck. But the insurance has to pay out if there is no causative link between the documentary defect and the crash itself.

Like the situation where it's illegal to drive into the rear of a car driven by a drunk person. It doesn't make it okay.

The whole "It shouldn't have been on the road" argument doesn't stand here.

If I don't have a current reg and/or WOF and I get a speed camera ticket, will I also get pinged for the other infringements ( i.e. no reg / WOF ) ?

Perhaps the officer thought the choice of bike was penalty enough [emoji12]

Just sayin
