Just about got taken out by a cage today on my cop bike and the first thing the woman says is,
"Sorry, I didn't see you." (obviously wasn't looking too hard to see my dirty great fluro bike)
I replied, "Yes, and that's why motorcyclists get knocked off their bikes".
She says, "Yes, my husband has a motorbike."
Right.... so, if by chance your wife came home with a $150.00 ticket today for trying to put me into the pavement and giving me heart failure at the same time, she got off pretty lightly considering how mad I was.

$150 was cheap!
It sure would be nice to able to exact that kind of retribution on someone who wasn't paying attention and gave me the spooks.
Been in the grass a couple of times because someone thought I was turning, but I wasn't. God dammit, if I was turning I would have had indicators going...
Sometimes I wish I had a paintball gun so I could mark 'em as a warning to others.
Or maybe just to mark 'em!

:gob: You ride a bike twice as big as any other on the road, you have enough lights for a disco and all the fluro on you and it requires sunnies to still see you... and she still doesn't see you??
No hope for us then... who was it that said assume your invisible... only way out I reckon...
hmmm the advantages of being a cop. Somebody does something really dum and you get to write them a ticket for it :first: Should put it on your recruitment drive posters... :msn-wink:

I know I will get blasted for this but..... I have experienced this. It is very hard to judge the distance and the speed of a bike coming at you with the light on. I know, on is good and mine is always on but when you come up to an intersection and make the split second decisions it is easy not to judge the speed of the head light correctly. In fact in some cases the drivers brain is still trying to process the information as they drive out. No excuse but if we all slow down we have more time to react.
And it is not always the fault of the car drivers. I nearly killed my stupid self at the Taupo Napier turn off 6 months ago. I came out of the small township called Bay view and headed North. The turn was a left hander. I pushed the button for the indicators to turn them off and away I went. Came up to the Taupo turn and wanted to go straight ahead and noted a car at the intersection. I slowed down cos it is a very dangerous intersection. As I got with in 10 meters of the intersection the car started to pull out. Stopped and then moved forward again. I hit the brakes hard and locked the front for a moment and they stopped. I had a felling I was going to hit the drivers door hard. I went around the car and gave the drive the one finger solute. I noted a look of surprise on the drivers face. It occurred to me somethin was wrong here. I checked my dash only to see the left indicator was on. She assumed I was turning. So I was at fault. I wanted to turn around and apologise but realised if I tried to stop her she would have had a heart attack and probably think I was out to give her the bash.
Anyway my point is we need to slow down and show some tolerance as we get it wrong from time to time as well.

Happens every day as you must know- just happened to a KB'er, yesterday I think, as I read something very similar.
There's an article in this months Kiwi Rider - Th curse of the SUV-Driving S.S.B*
Would have probably been in hospital today if I didn't almost stop as soon as I laid eyes on a dumb female donkey pulling out, sure enough she just pulls out looking only at the otherside of the road instead of at the approaching traffic lane - then make a big grimace as she sees me stopped a few feet from her window beeping and shaking my head and this was on Old North Rd - a regular race track.... not some 45kmph Remuera poo street.:wait:
Glad you gave her the ticket - won't make no diff - but at least she has to pay:spudgrr:

Hi BC - so you don't have 100W bulbs in your Company vehicle then?
Since I fitted 100W Xenon Brite White (cough.... illlegal I believe  ), I've really noticed how many cars move over when I approach from behind in daylight. I'd sooner be illegal and noticed than than the other way round.
Good on you for your action. You should fit rocket launchers

Ya know.. down here in otago there is a radio advert which seems to make it ok to use that excuse if the rider / pedestrian is not wearing a fluro vest from some road safety shop.
I've had a lot of people use that excuse after I pull up next to them at the next set of lights and give them a blasting... big red motorcycle with two huge lights always on... ya can't not see that if you looked.
But really.. people don't do the head check these days.
One day I'll get up the courage to ask them for their cell phone and tell them to pick it up from the police station.

How unfair, I wish I could ticket people for everytime they cut me off and don't see me. Man, I swear on the little FXR I would have given out a good $2000 worth of fines by now. Good stuff, maybe next time when she sees a motorbike she will see her money vanishing before her eyes and decided to see the bike as well, its certainly a cheaper option.

No you were not at fault. Case law states that a driver has to ensure that he knows where another driver is going. He cannot rely on turn signals.
At least she didn't cut bikey cop off then add insult to injury by giving the finger, like the import in a Beemer did to me this morning. But then he had to stop at the next lights, we proceeded to have a full and frank discussion about his driving practices and how the next time it won't be just his side window getting a whack.

'I didn't see you' she said when I chucked a U-ie and confronted her at the next intersection.
'That's because you didn't FUCKING LOOK you dickwit. My motorcycle planted through your front door would have fucked both our days don't you think?'
'Ummmmm. yeah.'
Fortunately I was watching her.

If they are on about bike riders wearing glo vests, then so should cyclists. Cars would all be wrapped in day glo strips, and caravans would just be banned from moving on weekends (hate the things). Any cage drivers caught talking on a mobile, would just have their hands amputated (with no anaesthetic).
People carriers, should have the drivers area sectioned off, and then they cannot be distracted by whatever is going on. And we will still blame the French for everything.

Got to admit, when I had the TL, NOBODY pulled out in front of me. Literally, I cant remember a single time in the 2.5 years I had it. Blindingly bright yellow colour, two over-wattage headlights always on, yellow jacket, and booming exhaust - even if they didnt see me (impossible unless they were blind, and even then there is some room for debate) there is no way they didnt hear/feel the exhaust note. Plus the somewhat imposing size of it, damn thing was bigger than some cars.
However, the Aprilia is a whole other story. On just my second day of ownership I had some fuck-knuckle in a subaru pull into my lane going over the newmarket overbridge. Stood it on its nose (luckily no one was tailgating me - unusual for Auckland!) and then after the guy has come about 3/4's of the way into my lane, he spots me (thru the rear veiw mirror I suspect) and swerves like a loony back into his own lane.
Bit late for that buddy . . . if I hadnt got out the way I would have been watching my new pride and joy get munched (oh yeah, and me too - cant forget that). Wasnt overly happy, and managed to communicate this somewhat adequately via some extremely animated hand gestures at his driver window. At least he had the decency to look embarrassed.
Fucking rock ape.

Ah yes - the mobile phone.
I was approaching the Harbour Bridge this morning, headed south, in the far left lane, and this car speeds up, pulls over to the left of me. WTF? Maybe it's broken down...
It slows, pulls back in behind me, and I give the driver an over the shoulder, "WTF are you doing?!?" look (a bit pointless with a mirrored visor, but never mind).
A minute or so later, she changes lanes to the right of me, and pulls alongside. Talking on her mobile phone.... :slap:
On a brighter note, going down Onewa Road a few minutes earlier, I was distracted by something in the corner of my right eye, so turned to look. It was the lady in the car to the right of me, talking to her toddler in the back seat, waving, and looking at me. Ah - I get it; she's telling her kid to wave to the funny man on the motorbike. I look at the toddler; he/she is the sickest looking kid I've seen - big red marks under the eyes, blothcy, pale complexion. Poor kid. I give a cheery wave, and Toddlerperson waves back, and looks a little happier.

Nope. The ones I encounter couldn't give a f**k. In fact , I think most of 'em would think it was pretty funny to knock a biker down. The only thing they'll understand is pain.
They're not actually anti biker they couldn't give a f**k about other cars, or treadleys, or pedestrians, either. If you want to get the messgae through to then, you have to convince them that their behaviour is going to hurt THEM.
If they're human enough for a leaflet to make them feel bad, then the leaflet isn't needed.

It's nice to know that performing a maneouvre that had a statistically very HIGH chance of killing or seriously injuring someone results in a $150 fine... while travelling at 130km/h on a semi-deserted stretch of mway which is a statistically very LOW chance of killing/seriously injurying incurs a higher penalty. Oh well, that's how our society works.
It's scary to think that someone missed a cop bike, i mean, of all bikes to miss!!! Hello????? Doesn't make me feel too good about my dark coloured riding gear, dark coloured helmet and my desire to buy a dark coloured bike... might just stick with the bright green one for now.
I admire your tolerance BC. I would impose $'wing mirror' fines for less... bit hard I guess on the "work hack" in your case :)

I bet she almost shat herself when she realised what she nearly did.
I had some bloke do a fast u-turn in front of me in newmarket, right into my path, luckily I was well aware of him and decided to have some fun. Mid way into his turn I just lent onto the horn and started to down shift very noisly, and didn't stop until he had pulled right to the curb and stopped. At which point I just wafted by giving him the international sign for wanker. The best bit was he stopped infront of a bus stop full of school kids waiting to go home, everyone started to clap and cheer.

If there were more Biker Cops floating around and these cagers started getting fines on a regular basis for their lack of observation power, and better still a demerit here or there, they would be more alert for all of us. "Shit hope this is not one of those cop bikes coming................. "
