View Full Version : How many KBers scuba dive?

Looking for dive buddies over the summer, which is rapidly approaching (yeehaa). I haven't been for a dive this year and I'd really like to get back into it. Sadly I just had to sell my underwater camera to pay the excess to get my bike back, so I'll have to be content with having a good look round. I'm not really a hunter/gatherer diver - much prefer scenic dives. All those interested let me know.

:niceone: just got my boat sorted, will be diving all summer.
Mainly Little Barrier / Kawau. Usually 2 - 4 of us on 6.0m Circa.
Boat is based Kawau Bay. Usually drop of the hat stuff, ie; not a whole lot of warning. Always a hardcase affair. What is your level?

What is your level?
I did SSI Open Water which is equivalent to PADI advanced. I don't go in for doing all those courses. Used to work for Dive New Zealand magazine so I've done my share of wreck diving, night diving, tropical diving & underwater photography. I do have some problems with my sinuses (even had surgery to widen them) so my descents tend to be pretty slow, and hence I prefer not to go too deep if I'm having problems equalising.

Would love to get into it but since arriving in NZ I have been told I have asthma apparently. Asthmna so I hear can cause some major problems for depths over 2 metres. I'll just stick to shallow water snorkling.

Not a lot around Auckland, mostly up north but could be interested if you got something in mind

Same on the deep scene, have done a lot of deep dives, danger vs fun ratio heavily in danger favour. We have lots of fun, with much less danger, in 40-60 foot for 90% of our diving. Horne rock is one of my favourite regular dives.
Even at 40-50 foot, it is Aucklands 'tropical' reef dive.
Can PM you next time we are planning a nice dive, so starts weather vs time vs availiability game.

Here's an idea for a long weekend..... if there are enough of us, we could ride up to Tutukaka (with a support vehicle taking all the dive gear), stay at the camping grounds there, dive the Poor Knights the next day, have a few drinkies that night, then ride back the next day. Even those who don't dive could come - they could do some snorkelling at the Knights, go off on a separate fishing charter, or head further north on a ride, or something. Those that are keen to give diving a go could even do a 'try dive'. Could be a big KB long weekend that would be lots of fun for everyone.

I would be keen on that if you dont mind having a less experienced diver along with you. Have got my open water cert, but havent done any diving for a number of years now. Very keen to get into it again, but dont have the gear so would have to hire.
Still, if you dont mind having me along, I would love to join in!

Don't you just throw the gear on, clamp the rubber bit in your mouth and jump in?
How qualified do you need to be to do that?

My wetsuit fell t'bits!
Last time I scuba'd was about the same time as mr H, after hitting The Poor Knights twice a month for about 5 years!
Got me NZUA basic scuba with Guy Kidd, at the Dive Centre in Wairau Rd, in Feb, 1976!
Bloody wetsuits....only last 25 yrs......mutter grumble....

Guy Kidd, eh? There's a man who's been around for a long time. Bit of a legend in the dive industry.

A keen diver here.
We've got a bach at Opito Bay - Coromandel.
Old fibrelight job - but is beachfront , 2 x beer fridges, 5 bedrooms, h & c water, flush toilet, 17' runabout plus a tractor - what else do you need.
I'm a bit busy with my new business at the moment but I'm definitely on for a weekend further into summer.

I'd be keen for a weekend dive. Got my PADI open water at Leigh a few years back. Have done a bit of scenic diving in Fiji & at the Poor nights. Got a Fuji F810 and an underwater case too, but need to hire a suit & tank etc.

Ever combined biking with diving? Once took all my dive gear (including wieght belt, BC, wet suit, reg etc.) on my GN 250 in the pack rack (no tanks of course!), with fins strapped on the back, to a dive trip out of Maraetai (from Whangaparaoa!)...talk about desperate to ride/desperate to dive....!

Hey Riff Raff and C4 - I'm keen - on Whangaparaoa - Advanced PADI. Use a Dive Kayak when I can - weather permitting - pretty good at rape and pillage, although I also appreciate a scenic experience. Whenever. PM me if you have space. Any weekend usually.

Used to do a lot of kayak diving around Whangaparoa. Those 3 wrecks that were sunk as a breakwater about 100 years ago are really cool. Shame they're so shallow tho.

Shallow is good. I never got into all of that deep, dark, depth-table macho diving shit. Shallow means better lighting, better variety of fish and more spectacular plant life. Much more entertaining.
I never got into diving off beaches either. Too much like hard work walking out through the surf with all your kit on. And, after you've exhausted your tank after an hour and you're buggered, the beach can't come out and pick you up! Sometime I shall recount my Whangarei heads cray dive experience as a case in point...

Yes it was! The diving in Nuie is brilliant. The water is warm and very clear. . As it is a rock sticking out of the ocean with almost no beachs it gets deep very quickly off the coral reef. with Deep water species come right up close to the reef and you can see most stuff just snorkling. Quite a few (poisonous) sea snakes but a local showed me how to deal them. But spending some time with a humpback whale was awesome, if a little scary for the first time on tanks. These things are the size of a truck, but move with such grace.
