View Full Version : First time buying a bike from a dealer - do I negotiate?

jonnyk5614

I've never bought a vehicle from a dealer before so this is all new to me.

I'm buying a 'busa from cyclespot tomorrow. 2015, 2000km, $16.5k. I've borrowed the money from the bank so I'm a cash/EFTPOS buyer.

When I had the test-ride, I told the salesman it was the colour I was after, a lovely bike and that I was keen.

He said he had a Saudi guy after it also but he was being pissy about the tradein value being offered for his R300.

I left $50 as a refundable "you'll call me before you sell to someone else deposit".

I've never paid the asking price on any vehicle though - was wondering what the usual way of negotiating with a dealer is?
Do you just pay the ticket price or do they have movement?

I'm thinking asking for a discount down to $15k (from $16.5), first service, heated grips and a pair of gloves. Am I going to be laughed at?

worth a shot - they can only say no

absolutely you negotiate

IMO, the best position to take with buying something like a vehicle is always be prepared to walk away if you don't get what you want. There will ALWAYS be another bike/car/couch that will fit your desires.
Its up to the salesman to make the deal, not you to persuade him to sell it to you.

You're definitely not going to be laughed at. He'll make a counter offer then you do the same etc. You might do better if you ask for some of the extras as part of a counter offer rather than right at the start. It doesn't really matter at the end of the day provided you're paying an amount that you're happy with to get a bike that you want.

Alternatively, do this:

before u go to the STEARLERSHIP (dealership_ , get a dollar menu cheesburger from ur local fast food joint. DOnt eat it yet, you will need it later.
Walk into the dealership and act normal like everything is great and you are just ar egular customer looking fora cool motorcycle. ALWAYS play it cool and let the salesperson come to you, shake their hand let them talk about themselves for about 20 minutes and only say yeah and sounds cool like a depressed teenager.
Remember to bring your checkbook or an envelope with cash and hold it in your hand so you look serious/anxious about buying.
Now after the salesperson has been talking for a bit pull out your cheeseburger and start eating it and talking with food in your mouth. This is going to set the stage. Start telling an irrelevant story and keep eating the burger and make sure its hard to understand you cause the burger. Then half-way through the burger stop eating it and just stare at them for about 10 seconds. Say "I really like this bike and im serious about taking it home today, oh can you take care of this for me" and extend your hand with the half eaten cheeseburger to see if they will take it and throw it away. AFTER THEY FOLD AND THROW THE CHEESEBURGER AWAY, ask them really politely if they have any discounts or sales taking place.
If they say no sales no discounts ask them for the cheeseburger back, (this always gets them) they will have a dumb look on their face like "WTF is happening, am i on a secret camera show". Quickly change the subject and start asking questions about the finance process and what kind of deal they can give you.
BE RELENTLESS asking for a discount/deal/sale/price drop/bonus/etc and keep waiving the checkbook around like you are getting impatient.
They will try and give you some bullshit excuse about no discount or whatever, but there is ALWAYS wiggle room in the price.
If you do not have much experience haggling and the burger stunt didnt work out then just start crying.
This strategy has saved me thousands and thousands buying and selling motorcycles. They think you're weird and just want to be done with the situation so they cave or they feel bad watching a grown ass man crying in the middle of a motorcycle dealership and give ya a discount.
IF THAT DOESNT WORK THEN DO THIS
After they say "ok, i really think your a (cool/great/honest/etc) person and I want to help you out I think we can work something out" let them tell you about how they can take of 100 bucks and throw in a free helmet/gear/service and all the other great stuff blah blah blah, BUT, you now have to buy a warranty in order to get the discount. FUCK THAT, laugh at them and say "nah dawg I fix my own shit I wont need no warranty but what I do need is like some cash back or heavy discount, you feel me"??
The new tone of voice and language usage will put them over the edge and make them uncomfortable.
Just say the number that you are willing to pay for the motorcycle and watch how they react. If they go ballistic and have that stupid shit-eating grin and say something like "that is below cost" or "we cant sell a bike for a loss we would go out of business" --- WHICH IS when you say "Well good sir, i have enjoyed our chat today and I want to let you know that I am VERY! interested in purchasing a bike from you today. I Have been to another dealership looking at pretty much the same bike and although they did offer me a steep discount I would much rather like to buy this motorcycle from your dealership because of all the good stuff I have heard about you" (talk about online reviews, or how someone you know had a really great experience dealing with them) also inform the salesperson about how the other dealership left a bad taste in your mouth and you would much rather do business with professional, honest, hard working gentlemen like yourself.
Now change the subject away from the motorcycle and focus on the business.
Say that you would like to hear about the shop and they handle repairs and warranty work etc etc, lots of shop talk right now and do not even bring up the specific bike, they will try and divert you back to talking about financing and accessories you can buy but be strong and ask them about other customers success stories etc. Keep prying into the business to see if you can get the salesperson to slip and give you a tell.
Now it has been about an hour and half and you still have no discount and they still are not not budging.
Thank them for their time and give them a good handshake and jokingly say "Well, I really do want the bike and I really appreciate you spending time with me answering all my questions, but at the current price it just won't work in my budget. I think that (your price) is more reasonable for this make and model and if we could settle on (your price) then I will sign the papers right now"
If that doesn't work then call them overpriced idiots and go buy a bike on craigslist.

Fuck that, I want the Saudi fucktard to buy it after his R200 and impale himself into the scenery at an obscene rate. He probably won't get the full 72 white raisins (sultanas) for that, maybe half? Except if he took some infidel dog with him.? Always sell the motorcycle equivalent of heavy artillery to the fuckwit that believes in reincarnation. Or heaven. or some shit.

I would.......Cash talks and bullshit walks.....16k is a shed load of coin of course you want more!!!.

Let them sweat for a week then.

Make a list of what you want to paye/extras you would like...Make and offer...If turned down say"Awwh no thanks ive got another bike in mind also" then leave come back in ten mins and start negotiating again.

Of course if Cyclespot troll on KB your ruse may well be up lol.......

You would be surprised how many bike shops have a "Saudi guy" looking at the bike your looking at.

Good luck with the buy there chap.

this is like providing materials for a tradesman to do a job, they often get a cut out of selling finance so cash isn't best all the time....

The in house finance price generally needs to be a lot less than the cash price for it to make sense. Even when the cash involved is a bank loan.

I feel you weakened your position showing your keenness by putting down a holding deposit. I prefer the "I kinda like it but I'm on the fence - what can you do to get me off the fence and into the saddle" approach. Make them work for it.

No harm in asking. Some people just can't be fucked with all that walk away shit. It's worth X amount to you (whether that is a good deal or not can be a bit subjective sometimes) so put your cards on the table and you'll either own it for that or not. A lot of the fun with vehicles is the looking and buying new shiny toys, that's over once you hand over the cash :P.

Again, no harm in asking.

Case by case but even though stealer won't approve of cash discount, you might get free tyres/ shipping/ servicing or some extra.

No harm in asking. Plus you got cash, that's king.

I think that recall is a very cautious one, my TNAB was part of it, story I got was Suzuki NZ have hundreds+ of the head gaskets but very few cam kits in anticipation of what will be needed. AS you say though, Busas aren't involved

This is what I got emailed...

Good afternoon

Thank you for the enquiry, I have checked your Vin number in our system and your motorcycle has a new 2016 rectifier / regulator campaign to be completed.
In our system we have it registered there has been a earlier rectifier / regulator campaign completed in 2011. The new 2016 campaign is to superseded the 2011 campaign and will require the new rectifier / regulator campaign to be completed.
Please make the necessary arrangements to have the new campaign completed at an authorised Suzuki dealership.

Im booked in .

Well, it was the bike I wanted with low kms and tidy condition and they offered a trade in on my old one.

I turned up on my old bike, handed over the keys, paid the money, and road the new bike home.

I knocked a dealer down $2300 on a new bike once as the opposition's equivalent bike was $3200 cheaper but this bike got a better review so I did knock him down so much. .

So it's not an equivalent bike then is it you docile cunt?

While some would say I was buying old technology (2 years) I was able to look up reliability reviews for the model which is something you are not able to do with current year bikes that well.

In 1984?
