Stator burned out on my 09zx6r 25kms. Have had it rewound by Ken in dinsdale. Do I need to replace my reg/rec if it's not faulty (haven't checked yet). Will a bad reg/rec take out the stator? Damn thing cost $265!

if ken has the ability to rewind he is the best person to test and advise on the rec reg.

Yeah, a bad reg/rec can take out the stator. Definitely have it checked.

$265 isn't bad at all. There's a few hours work in rewinding those things. Probably much cheaper than buying a new one. An evening or two of overtime would pay for it. I can't get a pair of mass produced cheap gook discs for that (not that I want a set of cheap gook discs).
In fact, this is quite a good advert for Ken, I'd say.

Have a look at Electrosport's page for testing reg/rec's:

If you aren't confident with things electrical then I'd say get a pro to test it. As mentioned above - if you've got blown diodes, it's going to direct-short the stator and fry it again in very short order.

Price looks fine to me for a rewind. I paid something like that for one ex USA for a Kawasaki about 15 years back and that was cheap then!

Wasn't there a recall for faulty reg-recs on that model?

Ken rewound the stator on my Blackbird a few years ago and sad to say, it only lasted a year before failing. In fairness though, the reg/rec might have been defective. So many bikes seem to have problems with reg/recs. Whenever this issue comes up, the advice always seems to replace them with the MOSFET design which are pretty bullet-proof. Street Triples had a world-wide recall (at Triumph's cost) to replace the OEM unit with a MOSFET design. Why the hell wasn't it done in the first place?

Sorry should have worded that differently. Ken is a top man. Cost $189 shipped back to me. It's the little reg/rec that is $265 unfortunately. I just don't want to spoil work Kens hard work running a half dead part. There was a recall but I didn't buy it new.. Shall do some further digging and see if the dealer has any info on it. I'll also dig up the service manual and find how to test it if I can.

I replaced the reg/rec on the R1 with a MOSFET one about a year ago. Big improvement and much brighter lights at low revs and idle. There are a couple of sellers on eBay.com doing kits with uprated wiring.

Just to second this, if you do burn out the stator, replace the rectifier. Dont try and save money, it will normally bite you.
If the reg burns out, testing a stator is a peice of piss, so the reverse doesnt always apply.
Also you need to check the wiring. I had a friend who replaced his stator and reg following a blown stator, and the reg burned out shortly after because the reinstalled reg didnt have sufficient heat shrouding for the wiring, and two wires burned out and shorted it.

Hi, I have just bought a Shindengen FH020AA reg/rec from Roadstercycle, for $143 US plus shipping. The guys on the Hyosung forum rave about this part and the service from that site.
I will have the boys at TSS Red Baron fit it for me, so I don't blow up my bike. I recommend you get some thoughts around that as well.

Old is post but if a 06 zx636r reg/rec fits I have a used one you can buy.
Also Google zx6r service manual, there is a section in it that covers testing your charging system.

Thought I'd give an update on this. Got the stator back in on Sunday and rode the bike back to Tauranga (home) without any lights plugged in, just to keep the draw on the charging system to a minimum. Had rang a local shop here informing them of the recall (can actually be found on the nz recall page :niceone:). At first they had never heard of such a thing, even being a Kawasaki dealer. Anyway, left my vin with them and got a call back saying Kawasaki has no records of mine being done under recall and was free to have it changed  . Off to pick it up in the morning. If anyone has a zx6r or zx10r 09-11, check it out and get that changed. Who knows, maybe it'll save you from being stranded somewhere.
Thanks for the help!

Excellent!
You actually want to draw as much current as possible because the reg/rec dumps the excess as heat. So keep the lights connected.

These were the contact details in 2010 - haven't used them since then. Should be easy to find the phone number.
