Hey all! :)

I was wondering if anyone can give me some info on EDD's (explosive detection dogs) and how to become a handler through the army. From what I have read online EDD teams have only started in 2012 and seems like you might have go down the field engineer path or military police? If anyone in the NZDF or perviously in it could share some wisdom would be great! :) cheers

not sure about these but i do know that if you ever get chased by a police dog don't try and evade them by running through a burning hoop or over a seesaw, they can do that too.

Enquires with the Army office are the go I see the link has already been posted here.

May have changed but I was always lead to believe the Sappers with Explosive handling backgrounds would be picked first for this role for obvious reasons.:shifty:

A specialist role very sort after by many now but not impossible to obtain... IF... you finish your Basic of course.:apumpin:

I'm a card carrying member of the SPCA and I am about to start a petition.

Do you want to find IEDs or disable them?
Search/high risk search are engineers, and yes the dog teams are their (underutilized) asset.

Disabling them is the EOD teams which tends to be logistics.

If the petition is to encourage the spread of exploding dogs, I know a number of cats who will sign it... :innocent:

The last time I dealt with NZDF dog handlers, they were all from the Airforce, all or nearly all were members of the Military Police. Things may have changed since then though with this new role.

I wouldn't sign yourself up to the NZ Army though, unless you know for sure that you can eventually switch to that particular role, and know how to get there. You might even spend 4 years just to get to the applicant level...

Glad those days have gone....Airforce personnel tended to be a bit 'Bent' and 'Twisted' esp as MPs.:p :girlfight:.
Flying or driving always good for a ride home after the "Party" though.

I left the NZDF a while ago, it seems that some things never change (the more they stay the same).
