My yamaha fzx zeal was getting fixed a week ago and they gave me a bandit 250 to ride until it got fixed. My zeal has a 140/70/17 rear tyre and when I saw the bandit I was thinking 'ok this is atleast a 140 most likely 150 width', then I look at the tire and it turns out to be a 130/90/17. So my question is how is a 130 width tyre wider by a noticeable amount than my 140 on my zeal? I was almost certain when I saw the tyre on the bandit that it was a 150. I thought I knew a decent amount about tyres but this really threw me off.

Different tyre manufacturers have different sizes. I found this out when I started racing motards. Where as a Michelin 160 slick was fine, other brands 150 and 160 sizes rubbed the chain.

well thats stupid, whats the point in having measurements if they dont follow them even remotely close? the 140 on my zeal is about 1.5-2cm away from rubbing the chain so im sort of stuck when it comes to tyre sizes

I started physically measuring them when I had my Hornet 900 as I noticed different fitment on the same rim. 180 rears ran from something like 175 to 185 when mounted.
My Ducati has a odd sized 180/60/17 but actually measures closer to 190 when mounted on the rim.
Exactly the same on the cars - 235/45/17 different brands between front and rear - slightly different widths when measuring the mounted tyres.
Consider the stated width as a 'guideline'

Thanks for the help and I think I will start measuring my tire from now on, one of the reasons now I think about it why the bandit tire might of been wider was because the rim on it was pretty wide, wider than my zeal so maybe rim width has something to do with it

Its a 250, dont worry about tyre size.

Rim size will make a difference as to how the same sized tyre ends up measuring in physical width once fitted.
Google specs for the Zeal state a 140/70/17 for the rear tyre as standard fitment.

140/70-17 although the one i have now is that exact size but is about 1.5-2cm away from rubbing the chain so I guess I have to be real picky when it comes to getting a new tire.

Ignore the chain distance - there should be a gap obviously and you are running a factory spec size.
I'm getting the feeling you want a fatter rear for the 'look' ?

In biking terms that clearance is like parking a car about half a metre away from the kerb...:eek5:

15 to 20 mm clearance is fucken loads. A 160 rear will fit in there and not rub.
A bit of chain rub doesn't matter two shits anyway, proven endlessly by motard riders.
Width and aspect ratio figures are a guide to tyre size, and the manufacturers thereof are quite clever with stuff. Don't fuck about measuring shit, if the numbers are right you can use it. Take note of what tyres you like the feel/performance of, and jog on.
