Packaging and preservation

I had occasion today to unpack a set of conrods which had been carefully prepped, oiled and wrapped in Chenille bedspread pieces...
Which had over time bonded to the steel rods...
Solvent wash and the odd careful wire buff got everything back to clean and usable but it shouldn't have happened.

If you're wanting to put disassembled pieces away for safekeeping, whoever unpacks them will appreciate a little forethought.
There are aerosol preservative sprays available now - quite cheaply. Engine oil and grease both absorb water over long periods so should not be used.
Once sprayed, wrap in gladwrap...easy and again, cheap.

Lastly - LABEL the bloody bits.

Yep, what seems like a good idea at the time....

Particularly the labelling part, thankfully my old man has started doing this with the multitude of parts he has at his place, when he eventually shuffles off it will be bad enough sorting all the car bits out without having to figure out if they belong to one of his cars or its just stuff left over from some project that never happened.

Needs to be two labels, one what you told your wife you said it was worth and one you mate has with the real value.

I've used that CRC Softseal, quite good....especially on Brit bike parts as they stay in ice cream containers for years and years...:lol:
