Hey All!!

I've managed to acquire a late 70's or early 80's Honda CB125 Bucket racer, but after doing some reading into the classes I face the question, does anyone still ride older 4 stroke bikes in the Bucket classes? Im not wanting to be competitive, just getting out and having fun. The engines had a fair chunk of work done and seems to get off its arse pretty quickly (not compared to a new 2-stroke mind you) or am I barking up the wrong tree with such a old bike?

If you don't mind not being competitive and just want a laugh then get some nylons and some decent tyres and get out there! Why not.
I know at the small kart tracks we run up here that even a few riding FXRs would be beaten by a decent rider on a CB125

I assume you will be riding at Ruapuna so you will certainly learn to not slow down for the corners, should be great fun keeping it nailed every where for as long as possible ..... :jerry:

Av rode around quite a few FXR's on her F5 CB100 at Taupo.

Here in Wellington we had a CB125 that someone had worked up a bit. I rode it one day and was very impressed. Great fun. Would be better with 17s but still should be a lot of fun.

The motor has had a fair bit of work I think, Its a XL125 so its 6 speed, Ive had a few cheeky blats around the block on it and it seems to get up and go, Also got given a few spare sprockets for it. As long as there are other "Slower bikes" for me to follow for a while, or anyone in CHCH that wants to come out to a friday track day and run me through the basics as I've never really ridden hard on a sealed surface. But I got it for a steal and thought that it'd be alot of fairly cheap fun to go out and have a blast. Just got to get some leathers and an approved helmet and join a club and try get a license and get out there. :scooter:

As already stated, a lot of it is down to the rider, but on a big track such as Ruapuna horsepower plays a significant part.

With good rubber you'll have an absolute blast battling it out with the stock FXRs

Under the new rules at Ruapuna you now need to have a race license to participate in the Friday sessions. There are no exceptions, no day licenses.
You can go to an MCI training session which is run on a Friday before a weekend racemeeting, its free but comes with a few conditions, contact Brent Cotton at MCI to find out

Wicked, cheers. I was planning on getting a license. Or is it easier/cheaper for day license? I dont really know what the day licenses are about

You need to join a club MCI CAMs or Bears , doesnt matter which one $30 or $40
You can buy a license $100 for a club one, $200 for a competition one, cant do streetraces or GP on a club license

Day License is $30 if you get 2 of these you can get a credit on a clubor competition one

if you have a club license then you can upgrade it for one event for $50 for Greymouth street race or methven mountain thunder but not both

You cant do Fridays on a day license, you need a club or competition one

But then Friday sessions wont be run on the smaller B track either? Might just prep myself and the bike get a day license and get to the next event and cram as much practice as possible haha

You can join and get a day license on the day. Since it's an MCI (motorcycling canterbury) meet it a lot cheaper to enter online.

2nd March 2016, 11:29
...pay the hundred bucks for a club licence, then you have one, then you can just turn up and race without the hassles...the first meeting will cost a couple of hundred bucks for the three things you need, then it's just turning up to race...if you can't afford the initial fee then you had better rethink the racing concept...join CAMS or CMI , get onto MNZ to sort the club licence, pronto, and you are away...

Maybe Askor can get out on his old GP125 and have a run with ya. That things a hoot, basically had to keep it pinned everywhere, much testicular fortitude required to overcome the urge to back off for the corner. Still managed to beat a few FXR's and nearly a R15 until he fell off, so definitely worth getting out there for a blast mate.

I'll race the FXR in F4 as usual, might take the GP for a blat in development or something. I'm lending it out that day so it depends how much track time my guy wants on it :scooter:

Bahaha. No thanks, imagine the speed difference when a S1000rr came across you at the end of the front straight. Though if you get 20+hp out of her it would be all good maybe.

Well, I dropped the oil today to put some of my new (apparently gold plated) Oil into it, and found a few little metal filings, they are magnetic so I was thinking Gbox bits? And then took the clutch side cover off to clean the centrifugal filter and found a film of brown/black shite sitting on the bottom with a few more filings of metal, question is. Is the motor toast or is it normal ish to see a bit of shit when ya crack these things open?

It might be no big problem, on a modern engine the filter catches alot of stuff that you never get to see, if I get stuff in the oil i just take my glasses off and it dissapears, change the oil often and you will get less stuff

Yeah, Thats what I thought, just wanted to double check because assuming its going to be okay and it going pop on my first outing wouldnt be fun... I did how ever take it for another strop around the block and by god, this racing things going to be a learning curve and a half.. Also, what do these ol' CB/XL motors rev to roughly? I still haven't found the point where "the power rolls off" I've been rolling into the eight thousands and it just keeps pulling...

The grass kart guys take basically the same motor to around 13 grand - but crank life suffers badly above about 11500.

I think he machined the new barrel in mine? I bought mine from a bloke in New Brighton who bought it from a fella named Nigel Marx. I like it thus far haha, I did have a XL100 a few moons ago that I loved, so it was fairly natural to get the CB, and the price was more than right. I have bought a new tank and seat off a Skyteam Ace, which makes the bike look 10x better, photos to come if anyones interested haha
