Got it about a month ago from red baron in wellington. test rode it and fell in love with it instantly, it surprisingly had alot of low/mid range torque for a inline 4 250, I have rode a FZR 250, Bandit 250 1996 and a ZXR 250 and they all feel gutless bellow 8-10k RPM but this zeal had quite a bit of poke to it down low but in return it was a bit twitchy. It also has a decent top end with a surge of power at around 10-12k but after 12 nothing much happens.
front left fork seal blew so I got that replaced under warranty then a few weeks ago both my seals went so Im getting those replaced under warranty aswell. when they were fixed the front was still a bit soft for my liking but acceptable for hard riding and the 2 rear shocks are garbage in my honest opinion, under hard acceleration in the lower gears you can feel the bikes rear shocks just go down quite alot and they are really soft and bouncy but for every day riding its actually pretty nice, its just a bit too much when you want to ride it hard around the rumitakas. Carbs were clogged since it was sitting in the dealer for 6 months so they got pulled apart and cleaned and then the low/mid range felt almost twice as good after that, the bike runs mint now.
The rear kendra cruiser tyre that came with it was absolute garbage and slipped around until i put a good few hundred KM on it, still does not feel like the most grippest tyre after putting a couple thousand km on it but it does the job and when I replace it im most likely getting some bt-45s
Gearing is short for what the bike is, first gear gets you to about 60 and 2nd gear gets you at 100 or just 1km or 2 under at redline. the bike cruises around 7-8km rpm at 110 on the highway and when you want to over take, since it has the most low end torque out of the 250 inline 4s and most likely the shortest gearing all you need to do is pop it into gear 5 and away it goes unlike a bandit that I have ridden which I had to shift down 2 gears and it over took alot slower because of the longer gearing and lower torque output. best way to describe the power output on this bike is perky. ok lets talk about top speed. I was worried when I got it because people said "oh it can only go 140-150" but it can go 160 every day no matter the condition and if its decent condition and you duck down then 175. just before I wrote this post I got it upto the 190 mark, I have no idea in the world how it happened but I did. Was pinned out and ducked down on the longest streetch ever and I recorded it on my phone with gps as 172KMPH true speed. the zeals speedometer is off a few ks so cruising at 53kmph is 50 exactly and 106-107 is 100kmph exactly so around the 190 mark which I hit today it recorded as 172kmph true speed which is pretty impressive for a short geared naked 250 right? Got a screen shot on my phone for proof if anyone is interested.
all in all im really happy with my bike, my cousin still thinks his RGV 150 is faster even though he only got 158kmph on the gps speed app but we havent got the chance to test it out yet since his bike is getting repainted. Only complaint would be the seating postion and pegs, I dont like how upright it is and how far forward the pegs are.
Condition wise its pretty mint other than some small scratches on the tank the paint work on the engine and everywhere else is spotless and people dont believe me when I say the bike was from 1991. Also this picture was from the day I got it so ignore the huge chicken strip on the back
