Ironman is a different breed. With the amount of preparation, training, build up, cost and other factors, it's no ordinary event to sorta go, bah, I'll do it another time. Not many simply give up. They're either on the verge of collapse or past it. While other events are largely physical (not saying this isn't) it does have a massive mental component.

Brown set a course record this year around 8h 7m. Elites start at 0645 with age groupers starting in waves at 0700. Cycle course closes at 1700, run course at midnight. You'll often find those that haven't made the cut off still going, knowing they won't get a medal, but wanting to finish all the same for themselves and loved ones.

Yup-Imagine being the guy that crossed the finish line at 12.04 17 hours 4 minutes of slog--to miss out by 4 minutes .
