Been ranting on KB a fair bit about cops and their speed obsessions.....
so when i did the biggish South Island trip i hooked up my escort radar detector, and was prepared to be targeted by" the Force. ..."
Bloody detector did not pick up those new wee Hyunday vans (red and grey ones)parked up here and there...
Spotted a few traps before detector did.....
AND, I have to admit that i got twice a warning from a cop.........
twice did a parked up cruiser light up his disco lights briefly and gestured us to slow down....
So yes, i have to admit that there are still some humans in at least some of those uniforms....
Detector didnt pick up everything.... bit disapointed in that...

and the other one also somewhere down South.

Cant remember the last time before that I ever got a warning.....
used to only getting the anal ones.....

I turned the camera band off 'cause that's the one that gives all the spurious warnings.

There isn't much warning from camera van radar anyway,
A) it's not very powerful? But mainly
B) it 's directed diagonally across the road, not along the road toward you.

I used to get about 200 m warning on camera vans with my Escort 8500. I say "used to" as I've not bothered to fit it to the new bike and don't miss it. Detector and screamer are sitting in the shed until I decide what to do with it. Much lower priority than wondering whether to have a beer or a glass of wine with tea :innocent:

yep new camera vans radar have a lower power narrower beam which means less radar scatter to pick up. The new mobile radar units in patrol cars now have instant on mode, no transmission till they hit the button then 0.5 to 0.6 of a second till they lock your speed. So if they are not targeting vehicles ahead of you no warnings.

They may also be using a vertically polarised beam, so a horizontally mounted detector won't pick them up.

Are you sure that the instant on units are something new?

Danger time is when there is no one ahead of you. I always get plenty of warning on a busy road, but you have to be careful if you're on your own.

Your right the instant on units aren't new, but they have been rolled out only as the old units came up for replacement. This has been happening for a few years so there can't be many of the old units left.

Unless the cop is only checking the odd car/bike that looks like it's going a bit quick...

Having recently moved here from Townsville North Queensland, I must admit that the police down here are pretty reasonable and I have had a couple of hands out of the window telling me to slow down (still used to the 110kmh speed limits in QLD). I accidently(yeah right) pulled a wheelie in CHCH city and was spotted by a cop and all I got was a don't do it again, yes sir.
