Fucking banks.
I have to pay my withholding tax early because the 28th is 'a holiday' according to my internet banking and I'm not able to make a payment.
WTF?

Generally speaking when tax due dates fall on a holiday or weekend the following weekday becomes the due date.

Our payday is normally a Friday. We realised today this this week we'll have to pay Wednesday night so people have money Thursday because if we get it wrong, we won't be able to correct people's pay on Friday ... or Saturday ... or Sunday ... or Monday. We'll have to wait until next Tuesday which means they won't get an error fixed until next Wednesday. Fortunately we more often than not don't have any errors to fix (one off pays).

it's not as though "your money" isnt doing anything in the time between when you dont have it and the receivee receives it...
and as said, computers make the idea of "banking hours" irrelevant.

Never quite figured that myself either, or why it takes a credit card payment 3 days to make it's way between banks

Same Bank Same Day otherwise a normal transfer from say ANZ to ASB can take a few days.
There is always the option going to the bank and making the payment, at least that way, you'll have receipt of the payment should any questions be asked.

All the trading banks in NZ syncronise payments hourly. Some banks don't post the transaction immediately but they must by 10 pm the following business day.
Not all banks show funds or release them immediately but they must before 10pm on the second business day.
Those banks that don't do so immediately don't because by taking it out of your account but not releasing it or recieving it but not releasing it to the owner of the account they deflate the amount they pay as the party not paying interest either to their lenders or the account holder.
