hey suzi....my advice....cheap steering dampers are like cheap saftey wear...
spend the extra coin and go Ohlins....I have one...and apart from been a beautiful piece of looking kit...it works really well...an almost perfect range of adjustment...and was really easy to fit it...ring 06 278 4160 and ask for robert taylor.
For those in the know...I ride a TL1000s...the are the most well known tankslap happy bikes...and since the ohlins damper...no worries...at all!!!!

Have you ever had a tank slapper on it? Do you still have chicken strips on your tyres? Have you ever launched out of a corner using full throttle while cranked right over with everything dragging?
If you answered, "No", to the above then save your dosh.
Otherwise don't go for any false economy stuff. Get an Ohlins and buy it from Robert Taylor in Hawera so it gets set up properly. Check that you have brackets to mount it as well, if not there will be engineering costs.
If you are riding hard enough to NEED, not want, a steering damper then get to a race track.
Be aware that a poorly setup steering damper can slow your steering, make slow speed stuff awkward, and possibly even make the steering very heavy.

I'd go ohlins, with a harris mounting kit, it all works well and looks fantastic(i think you would have seen mine on Saturday?) the R6 i test rode needed one more that my R1 duz(R1 only needs it for landing wheelies) but i wouldnt worry to much about travling the country side to get someone to set it up, u can adjust them on the fly, and if you go ohlins you are only going to have it set at around 2 or 3 of the 16 positions availible(i know coz i have seen how you ride) it will sort any potential tank slappers without slowing down your cornering...thats my 2cents worth...

Dont know about your Ohlins, but mine has 20 settings...
Ohlins and WP are the best, with Hyperpro a close second :niceone:

I know - I ride like a Girl - perhaps that's because I am one!!! But don't forget you didn't catch me on the Old Tai Tapu rd - i did get up to 201 kms. But then you guys left me behind after that!!
Sounds like the Ohlins is the one for me - we were looking at either Ohlins or Hyperpro. As Glen says, I may not ride that hard but it is a safety feature just in case.

hyperpro....is really a try hard brand...look pretty...but not so much go pretty....if you know what I mean...
Racers use Ohlins and white power....mainly ohlins....and yes I agree....it is a major safty feature...and worth the peice of mind alone...

I'm not sure you really need it for safety if you're not riding hard on the road. A bit of head shake lets you know your trying hard :)
I had one on my NSR for many years and ended up winding it right down to get a better feeling for the front end.
My current GSXR slaps all the time on the road without one, but never enough to make me think I need to waste a shit load of money on a damper. I can buy a couple of rear tires for the same money ;)

acceleration head shake is a hell of alot diff from coming out of a corner head shake....dangerous....you should know this....???? maybe not then???
Best you are not giving advice on saftey either matey...one can never be to safe on a motorbike....if suziQ or anyone for that matter will enjoy their riding more because they have less to worrie about while out on the road because they feel safer or are safer because they take as many precautions as possible...to stop what if's??? power to them....if you ride hard....you need to be more safety concious...because what ifs are more likely to happen...
you can't tell me your skill will stop a slapper...if you do your full of shit...aye?
ten foot high and bullet proof is no way to live a long life mate...
Ps: tank slappers can happen because of incorrect tyre pressures [tyre harmonics] amoung many other causes...not always what people expect the to start a slapper...

if I had a damper on that bike...I probally would of just had a fright and carried on...

I used to own one...and had it replaced under warrenty twice because it leaked fluid...
then I threw it in the bin the third time...but your right...it had a really good range of adjustment...better adjustment than the ohlins one...as it only has 16 settings...

Maybe you got a shitter, it happens. Had no problems with mine.. well hasnt slapped so itsdoing something right or I'm just soft.
also had a KR1 250 smoker.. the red and white/black one.. and yep, that had more slappers than Hunter's Corner
my KR1-s finally died [it was a red and black too]when i hit a sheep at about 140kmph...believe it or not it was my most un-pain full crash...for some reason I just landed on the road softly-ish and slide nicely to a stop....but fuck me...what happened to the bike...you wouldn't have believed....and the sheep...errr...nasty
Hell of a fun bike though...despite its nervious disposition....
its probally doing it job!
I don't think...but am not a 100% sure that the TLR's had the same issue with being nervious handlers like the TLS did...I'm pretty sure the TLR rotary damper was re-worked by suzuki to have a much more digressive damping curve than TL's one...as most of the bad handling traits these bikes suffer [suzuki TLs and TLR] is alot to do with the overly hard compresion from the rotary damper...not helped by the amount of extra friction a rotary damper produces internally compare to a conventional damper....so the over hard dampening on the rear places extra strain on the front forks...which are quite well damped...but not good enough to cope with the bad balance due to the rotary damper not being able to do its job...

Look my R6 was a little twitchy when I got it. I've tuned that completely out with suspension setup, experimenting with tyre pressures, riding position, and throttle technique.
I'm not mega quick, but I have been known to make Buell XB12R riders cry. I've attacked bumpy corners trying to provoke the thing too.
I think you could get a pretty decent rear shock for the price of a steering damper and careful setup will net a comfier ride and a more stable chassis. All a steering damper is going to do is limit steering lock and stop you from jamming your thumbs against the tank. But from most of the stunned silence I get when I post about actually owning an R6, and refuting the rumours of it being a tank slapping peaky death machine I guess, no strike that, I know I'll just get the, "STFU n00b, what do you know" speech.

When that happens to my boy, I prefer them term "Highside".
It's normally after a high speed run down the hall from his bedroom, across the tiles in the dining room to the carpeted area in the lounge. It is the transition from the slippy tiles to the grippy carpet that will...if there is any sideways action, cause the highside to occur. Luckily an LCM bar rectifies the situation.
He is learning to either keep the slippy action or straighten up before the carpet.

Having owned a Kr1 for about 12 years and ridden an R6 I'd say that neither need a steering damper for road use. Jim2 is spot on about setup and I think adding one would detract from it's excellent steering response. Steering dampens aren't great in heavy stop start traffic either. If someone is out riding and they arn't enjoying themselves because they have a little gremlin in their head worring them about their bikes handling, reputation,or stories they have heard about it....no matter what the cicumstances...they won't be enjoying themselves...the human minds insticts are that of survival...
There are hundreds...no...probally thousands of riders out there that don't feel as relaxed on their bikes as they should...because of little worries about what if's...and if they think they need a damper or anything else...good...shut up and don't talk them out of it...if a $800-$900 damper will make them more relaxed about riding their favorite toy...its a small investment with big pay-offs...and then...if your bike does shake its head occasionally...you would be a fool to think you can hold on to a tankslapper with upper body strenght...just because you can handle a little wriggle...especially on modern sports bikes...as you have buggar all leverage on the bars...despite comon belief by alot of people that you do!!

And if that doesn't work put a steering damper on it to disguise the poor handling  (must be ohlins of course)
with 16 or 20 settings....this is the question???
coldstream road is the last road on the right before the 70 sign [down where the cemetry and cricket grounds are]...heading to loburn...
...the GP starts with a big wheelie off the railway crossing...fast straight...with a slight kink..then a mix of good medium speed corners...cold stream road finnishes with a shap blind left hander...and your on tulls road!!! after a nice knee down right hander and a fast open left...nice small straight...then another knee "almost down" right...long straight...keep your eyes peeled for random cows walking down the road...and the cowshit half way down the straight [cow crossing]...then hard on the brakes...and go really really slow round the next corner...coz a stupid cow cocky walks his cows across the road on it...and then speed up fast left...straight...on the barkes...little left...stop...the road infront of you is SH1...turn right...you'll be in waikuku in seconds...
Tell me you don't know the road???

If people are that worried about little things when they don't ride hard then they should give up motorcycling ;) what if a car hit them? or they drop it on cowpoo :)
Have you ever watched a GP where someone gets a ginormous tank slapper but holds on so tight they pop shoulders/wrists. It can be done.
Again you take it all too seriously. People who ask the question generally already know the answer......they will get one no matter what because a good damper looks cool and makes them look like a racer. :done:

No shit genius, of course they do. If you want to talk about the technical details of GP racers then I'm up for it........ :headbang:
My point being it still doesn't guarantee that it won't dislocate your shoulders or break your wrists, Or spit you off big time..........sure a damper may help, but its not a guarantee it will stop it tank slapping or stop you binning it.
Basically if you want one get one. :whocares:

Contradiction yes, but I don't ride as hard as I could........Im banking on the fact I won't get the mother of all slappers. I ride on well known roads (17+ years) so know where any crappy bits are. On unfamiliar stuff I slow down.
I bet your TLS was fun before you put your damper on :)

It needs one because it is poorly designed, on the other hand your jappa is perfectly designed, thus not needing one
