Bike is in for a valve clearance check today - expensive at the best of times.

I have the fingers crossed because last time we did this, one of the cam followers and its cam lobe were fooked. Arm and a leg and a big delay that was.

So like I said, fingers crossed.

You're only paying for time...Once upon a time you'd have thought nothing of doing it yourself.
A fairly large proportion of the charged time is actually getting to the core job...and that you can do yourself.

They checked the clearances on my big bandit at the last service - 72,000 klicks - all still perfect ... the check cost me bugger all extra on the bill.

Well, nothing broken inside this time. A few shims later it's all go again. Boyds were very good about the price too. Top shop that. They have my vote every time.

Have to say, the bike feels and sounds a lot better than it did.

Boyds would probably be one of the top shops in NZ when it comes to Tyres, servicing and gear (basically everything).

May I ask how much it cost and work involved? Just as an index/ guideline, please?

Work: Remove most everything to allow access to engine, take top off same, check and adjust valve clearances, replace shims as necessary for clearances. 84,000k service plus replace blown headlight bulb (a mission in itself).

All up cost somewhat south of $750. Most of which was labour of course. But at least they know what they are doing. And have the necessary tools. And knowhow. Unlike myself. I am just not set up to do that sort of work.
