Speed trap warnings

Hey guys and gals,

Not entirely sure if this topic is legal but let's give it a go.

This has been bugging me for a while. After I pass a revenue collector (speed camera van/police officer with a radar gun) I'll always be on the lookout for fellow bikers heading towards me to warn them.

My two questions are these...

For how long do you warn oncoming bikers?
Whenever I pass one I'll note the current odometer reading and warn bikers up until 10km's after. However whenever being "flashed" by other car drivers it is usually just around the corner. At the end of the day letting the other biker know there is a speed trap ahead - regardless of how far away it is - it would always help them out if they were in the need for speed.

My second question is this. What do you do to notify the other biker of an upcoming speed trap?
Back when I first started riding a biker waved his left arm around like a siren - obviously meaning a speed trap or police officer up ahead. So this is what I have done for the last five or so years. However when I was on my South Island road trip a lot of riders down there would simply whack their helmet with their left fist. Obviously you can't just flash your headlights like cars do as our headlights are always on (may look like you're going over a few bumps).

You're bound to get a few different answers to your questions, as not many bikers can agree on much it seems...

How long do I warn oncoming riders of a speed trap ahead? Depends on the territory, out in the wops maybe 5-10 mins, but on a main drag maybe 2 or 3 mins.

As for the signal, the prostate finger I've seen on 3 continents over the last 30 years, along with the headlight flash. Flash your passing signal a couple of times does the trick. Have heard of the weird habit of mainlanders banging their left hand on their lid, but in the part of the world where I grew up that meant something different entirely, so I don't partake in that one.

There is serious amounts of tax-collection being done on the NW motorways by bacon sitting on the on-ramps and "shooting you in the back" recently. Be aware.

Normal signal of left hand with index finger pointed up and "rotating beacon" as signal to others.
Distance/time is normally a few km's, but depends on the exits available for the oncoming bikes.


Speed cameras. A quick "beacon" signal then a closed fist to an open hand (like the flash going off).

I flash, 2 - 3mins then my nips start to get cold so I roll my top back down. Same for hazards, unless it's something major then I go crazy on the indicators too and turn up the doof doof (more bikes need a hazard light button I reckon)

I appreciate the effort of someone giving hand singles but don't always know if they were waving, insulting me or warning me at a glance :laugh: When someone is going bat shit on the headlight (or hazards from cars, trucks etc) you know something is up.

Standard motorway police operating procedure for at least the last 20 years... You never go full noise past an on ramp without checking the mirror first. You prob just seen him a couple days in a row when he was in between writing out tickets.

No need for these elaborate illuminate style secret signals, just give a quick flash of the lights....

Yerp, there is.

I was followed again tonight by an "undercover" for 5 ks. Black Commodre, may have been an SS. Late model anyway. He kept coming up close then backing off. Then he saw a guy on a yellow Duc going the other way and pulled a U turn into opposing traffic. Of course the road was not wide enough so it became a 3 point turn and cars backed up. :no:

In the UK its aiding and albeiting, or used to be. Here some cagers have been done for inadvertent/unnecessary/distracting use of a headlight or something.

Hence the requirement to inform other road users of an approaching DANGER.
The Donut-munchers are a simple road hazard that others need to be aware of.
If any of them accuses you of "flashing your lights", you are alerting them to a fuckwit (commodore-equipped) who is likely to pull a life endangering U-turn in front of them.

It's quite common to see guys (always guys) standing by the side of the road waving signs ahead of a speed camera.....even the cops were doing it when they were having a pay dispute......
