Hi my girlfriend has got her bike licence and wants to buy her first bike. We are ideally looking for something like a GN250 or Scorpio 225 etc that is light, powerful enough but not to expensive (budget of $3000 max). Ideally the bike will be located in Christchurch or the surrounding area.

Anybody know of any bikes that could be suitable for sale?

Haha not likely!

And yea, you're right, they are completely different bikes. What I'm trying to say is we are interested in anything around the 250cc range that is light and doesn't have to many fairing etc for a learner to scrape up.

Happy to listen to any and all ideas on bikes, looking to buy one in the next few months if we can find the right one.

He'd be happy if you supply a photo of a ravaged goat tethered to a strainer post.

Ignore Axle, the forum tosser. He has no bike and KB represents his life. Out of the two you mentioned, I would suggest the Scorpio as a good bike to start on. As an alternative, a Suzuki FXR 150 in good cond, is a good beginners bike, and cheaper too.

+1 on the Scorpio. Used to own one. Plenty on TM at the moment I think...

They tend to cost a bit more but Honda VTR250s are rated quite well as learner bikes (saying that as someone who rides one) there is this one in Auckland (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-1076036370.htm) that you could get shipped down, but I have no idea how much it will end up. The other ones on Trademe are a little out of your price range but maybe some astute haggling could get you a decent deal.

VTR 250 is a very good learner bike. There is an 07' model on TM that could be bought for $3K but it's not in the Christchurch area unfortunately.
You can pick up those Kawasaki 250's for around the $3K mark also if you're cheeky enough.

If light weight is important, consider a 2-stroke?

There was one in Christchurch recently at a Motorcycle Imports Direct, might have been a 230 come to think of it.

Can't go wrong with the FXR150 as a first bike.

Depending on how long yer girls legs are, a dirtbike makes a good starter bike.
Not usually much to break when it falls over (coz it will sooner or later).
Easy maintenance, easy resale.
Why restrict yourself to strictly road?
